This document is the Hardware User Guide. It provides wiring, installation, and components
description.
For system configuration, please refer to the Observer Series Configuration Guide.
Overview
The Observer 4816 NVR is a powerful all IP solution that records up to 16 digital IP cameras for premium quality images in full HD
resolution. Utilizing the latest H.265 video compression technology for smaller le sizes, the Observer 4816 NVR can store even
more HD video and signicantly lower bandwidth costs when wirelessly ooading recorded footage. With storage options up to
10 TB available to choose from, the Observer 4816 NVR also features built-in Wi-Fi and cellular networking capabilities, embedded
GPS, a built-in accelerometer, and an SD card slot for optional mirror recording.

Components
Front Panel
1 Removable Hard Drive The hard disk drive (HDD)
provides the main storage for recorded data.
2 Status LEDs The Status LEDs illuminate to display
the current status of the NVR (see chart).
3 SD Card Slot Insert an SD card into the slot until it
clicks. To remove the SD card, briefly press it in until
it ejects.
4 SIM Card Slot (under development) cellular
connectivity available by use of external LTE router.
5 USB Port Insert a USB flash drive to download
events quickly without having to remove the SD card
or hard drive, or upload firmware updates. A USB
mouse may also be attached to navigate menus in
collaboration with an external monitor.

Rear Panel
1 LAN Port (RJ45) Connection for the POE Smart Switch
IP camera hub. The Smart Switch MUST be connected to
the LAN port. This port can be used to connect a laptop
to configure the NVR.
Default IP address: 10.100.100.1/24
2 WAN Port (RJ45) Connection for optional network
accessories.
Default IP address: 192.168.1.100/24
3 IPC Ports Connections for up to 16 network IP cameras.
4 Panel Port Connection for optional CP4-series monitors.
5 VGA Port Connection for optional monitor.
6 Diagnostic Port Service Technician use only.
7 GPS Antenna Port Connection for the external
antenna for the internal GPS module.
8 WiFi Antenna Connector (SMA) Connection to an
external antenna for the internal WiFi module.
9 Cellular Antenna Connector (SMA) Under
Development.
10 USB Port Connection for optional USB accessories.

Installation
Security Cover
After connecting all needed cables to the rear of the NVR as shown in the wiring diagram (see page 5), snap the security cover into
place and secure it using the included security Torx screws.
Flat Mount
Secure the NVR to the surface with four (4) #10 machine screws with nyloc nuts, self-tapping screws, or rivets.
Ensure that the front panel of the NVR remains accessible and there is a minimum 2.5 inches of clearance for cables.
Do not install the NVR in an area of the vehicle cabin that could interfere with the safe operation of the vehicle.

To remove the hard drive canister from the NVR
1. Ensure the NVR is powered OFF.
2. Insert the key into the hard drive canister lock and turn it clockwise.
3. Turn the two hard drive canister thumb screws counterclockwise until they are loose.
4. Pull the hard drive rmly and straight out.
To reinsert the hard drive canister into the NVR
1. Push the hard drive rmly all the way into the NVR.
2. Turn the two hard drive canister thumb screws clockwise until they are secure.
Do not over-tighten the thumb screws. Use finger pressure only!
3. Insert the key into the hard drive canister lock and turn it counterclockwise.

Removing / Inserting the SD Card
The SD card access door is secured by the hard drive canister and can only be opened when the hard drive canister is removed.
WARNING: Do not remove the SD card until the NVR is turned off.
WARNING: Do not force the SD card into the slot upside down or backwards.
To remove the SD card from the NVR
1. Remove the hard drive canister using the procedures described in “To remove the hard drive from the NVR” (pg. 7).
2. Open the SD card slot door from the top edge.
3. Lightly push on the SD card until a “click” is felt, then allow it to spring out of the slot. The SD card partly ejects.
4. Pull the SD card straight out.
To reinsert the SD card into the NVR
NOTE: Ensure the SD cards write protection slider is in the “unlocked” position.
NOTE: Use only SD cards obtained from Safety Vision.
1. Insert an SD card into the SD card slot label-side up, with the notch to the right, until it clicks in place.
2. Replace the hard drive canister using the procedures detailed in “To reinsert the hard drive into the NVR(pg. 7).
