Safety and regulatory information
Users must observe the safety precautions and regulatory guidelines outlined in this
manual, as well as good technical judgment, whenever this product is installed or used.
Product handling and environmental guidelines
Electric current from power and communication cables is hazardous. To avoid
shock hazard when connecting or disconnecting cables, follow appropriate
safety precautions. Ensure that the correct operating voltage is used when
powering the device.
Do not open the equipment to perform any adjustments, measurements, or
maintenance until all power supplies have been disconnected.
The ZEUS ICE is equipped with a certain level of protection against power
surges. However, to ensure maximum protection, or when using in areas
susceptible to electrical disturbances and lightning, use of an external surge
suppressor is strongly recommended.
Anti-static handling
The ZEUS ICE includes a circuit board which contains CMOS devices that could be
damaged in the event of static electricity being discharged through them. Please
observe anti-static precautions at all times when handling the product. This includes
storing boards in appropriate anti-static packaging and wearing a suitably earthed wrist
strap whilst handling.
Packaging
The ZEUS ICE is shipped in specifically designed packaging to protect the product
from the rigors of transportation. In the event that the ZEUS ICE needs to be returned
to Eurotech Ltd, it should be adequately packed, preferably using the original packing
material. Damage to the ZEUS ICE caused in transit whilst shipping the product back
to Eurotech Ltd may invalidate any warranty claim.
Safe battery use
The ZEUS ICE contains a coin-type replaceable Lithium battery to maintain its real-
time clock when input power is removed. During shipment the battery is disconnected
and should be connected before using the board, or else the real-time clock resets on
loss of power. Please refer to the link section of this manual for details.
Do not short circuit the batteries or place in water or on a metal surface where
the battery terminals could be shorted. Do not incinerate or heat to more than
100 °C (212 °F). Do not crush or otherwise disassemble the battery, or
attempt to repair the battery.
Do not recharge. The batteries are non-rechargeable. There is a danger of
explosion if a lithium battery is recharged or incorrectly replaced.
Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions and
local ordinances.

Radio frequency requirements
This device complies with Part 15 of FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following
conditions:
1 This device may not cause harmful interference.
2 This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may
cause undesired operation.
3 To comply with RF safety requirements, you must maintain a distance of 20 cm
from the antenna when operating the device.
4 Each antenna of this device must not be co-located with (within 20 cm of) any other
antenna or transmitter. Antenna requirements are listed in the FCC grant
information for each module, below.
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
The ZEUS ICE is classified as a component with regard to the European Community
EMC regulations and it is the user’s responsibility to ensure that systems using the
product are compliant with the appropriate EMC standards.
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B
digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules and European Community EMC
regulations. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful
interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can
radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the
instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there
is no guarantee that interference does not occur in a particular installation. If this
equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can
be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to
correct the interference by one of the following measures:
1 Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
2 Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.
3 Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from the one the receiver
is connected to.
4 Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.

ZEUS ICE Technical Manual Introduction
Introduction
The ZEUS ICE is an industrial enclosure for the ZEUS embedded processor board,
ideal for remote telematic and wireless data acquisition/routing applications. It's rugged
construction enables it to operate within most environments and it's two-piece
aluminum construction offers a fully CE compliant ready-to-go solution.
The ZEUS ICE is run by the ZEUS, an ultra-low power, high performance single board
computer. The ZEUS board is designed and manufactured by Eurotech Ltd and is
based on the Intel XScale™ PXA270, 520MHz processor. The ZEUS' functionality is all
broken-out to industry standard connectors.
The ZEUS ICE has dual 10/100baseTx Ethernet, onboard 128MB SDRAM, 32MB
Flash memory, CompactFlash (CF+) port, two USB1.1 ports, 2 serial ports and
onboard graphics. It can drive a standard VGA analog display. There is also provision
to add PC/104 modules.
The ZEUS ICE also includes a wireless modem and a GPS receiver, and is designed
to create cost effective solutions in asset monitoring, asset tracking, mobile terminals
and network communication controllers. ZEUS ICE provides real-time network access
to any Ethernet, 802.11 or serial device for mobile and fixed data applications.
This User Manual provides the basic hardware information required for getting started

Features
The features offered by the ZEUS ICE include:
• Rugged design which handles challenging industrial or mobile telemetry
environments.
• Takes full advantage of TCP/IP technologies of the cellular networks.
• Can be configured as a firewall with a variety of data encryption and authentication
methods.
• Provides secure routing of IP data between the cellular network, Ethernet, and
802.11 WLAN.
• Can serve as default gateway from local wired or wireless LAN to the Internet.
• Field equipment may be connected through local RS-232, RS-422/485, or LAN
ports.
• GPS receiver allows applications or local devices to pinpoint exact location.

Ports, LEDs and Connectors
The front panel of the ZEUS ICE contains the following ports and indicators:
• POWER – 10V-30V DC input.
• 3 LED indicators.
• 2 LAN ports. RJ-45 10/100BaseT Ethernet, with link and activity LEDs.
• 2 USB ports. Port 2 is used internally for IEEE802.11 WiFi.
• Analog VGA (‘D’ type 15 way socket).
• Serial ports, labelled ‘1’ and ‘2’:
- COM1: RS-232 serial port for local console diagnostics.
- COM2: RS-232 for data communication.
• CELL: Cellular antenna connection (SMA).
• GPS: Antenna connection for GPS receiver (SMA).
• 802.11 – Antenna connection for wireless 802.11b network (SMA).
• Two 25 way ‘D’ cutouts for additional breakout.
Further information about these ports and connectors is provided in the sections below.
Power connector
The ZEUS ICE can be powered from 10V-30V DC. Power to the ZEUS ICE is supplied
via the 4-pin power socket (mating connector: Kycon KPPX-4P plug). The pin

as shown in the table below. The standard baud rate for the ZEUS ICE on both
communication port channels is 115.2kB.

Installing a SIM Card (GSM/GPRS)
If ZEUS ICE has an optional GSM/GPRS modem fitted, it requires a SIM card from the
network provider in order to operate on the cellular data network. The SIM card is
accessible through an access panel on the bottom of the ZEUS ICE.
To change or install the SIM card, perform the following steps:
1 Remove the power connector, then remove other connectors from the ZEUS ICE.
2 Unscrew the four screws and remove the access panel on the bottom.
3 Slide the black SIM card holder, and remove the existing SIM card.
4 Install the new SIM card and replace the access panel.
5 Restore all connectors, and finally reconnect the power cable.
