About This Guide
What is in this guide
This guide explains how to perform the following installation and basic configuration tasks on
an APX 1000 unit:
Physical installation of the chassis and its components
Connection of an administrative terminal to the APX 1000 unit
Configuration of the APX 1000 unit for administrative network connectivity
This guide also provides technical specifications and an operational overview of the APX 1000
unit. When you finish performing the instructions in this guide, the unit will be installed and
you will be able to access it via a Telnet connection for further configuration.
You can then use the APX 1000 Physical Interface Configuration Guide to configure the slot
cards in your unit. For information about configuring the unit for Asynchronous Transfer
Mode (ATM), frame relay, or routing and tunneling services, see the APX 8000™/MAX
®
configuration guides listed under on “Documentation set” on page xv.
Note: This manual describes the features for APX 1000 units running software version
9.1-149. Some features might not be available with earlier versions or specialty loads of the
software.
What you should know
!
Warning: Before installing or operating your APX 1000 unit, be sure to read the safety
instructions in the Edge Access Safety and Compliance Guide. For information specific to your
unit, see the “Safety-Related Electrical, Physical, and Environmental Information” appendix in
your units hardware installation guide.
This guide is for the person who installs and performs basic configuration on APX 1000 units.

Overview of APX 1000 System and
Features
The APX 1000 product is shipped in configurations that are tailored to your environment. This
chapter provides an overview of the features of the APX 1000 and the configurations in which
it is available. The components of the APX 1000 and their functions are also identified.
APX 1000 features overview
An APX 1000 unit is a WAN access switch, or concentrator, designed for the multiple access
requirements of Internet service providers (ISPs), carrier service providers, and major
corporations. The unit supports up to 672 (T1) or 720 (E1) DS0 connections by means of
multiple access technologies, and provides voice and data aggregation. For voice applications,
using SS7, IPDC is supported. ASGCP is not supported.
The APX 1000 supports switched and leased-line connections and analog and digital user
sessions. The unit complies with existing standards for networks, authentication, and Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP) management.
The APX 1000 chassis is available in four configurations to meet the requirements of different
environments.
T3—supports up to 672 user connections
24-port Multi-T1—supports up to 576 user connections
24-port Multi E1—supports up to 720 user connections
16-port Multi E1—supports up to 480 user connections
8-port Multi T1—supports up to 192 connections
APX 1000 system overview
The APX 1000 chassis is 17.2 inches (43.7cm) wide, 5.2 inches (13.2cm) high, and 18.5 inches
(47cm) deep. The front of the chassis, shown in Figure 1-1, contains the ventilation fans and
air filter behind a plastic bezel.

Figure 1-1. APX 1000 chassis, front view
The rear of the APX 1000 chassis, shown in Figure 1-2, consists of the following major
hardware components:
One shelf controller
Five expansion slots, containing
One or two ingress slot cards that support subscriber connections to the APX 1000
One egress slot card that passes combined subscriber traffic onto a backbone network
Up to three digital signal processor (DSP) slot cards, or two DSP slot cards if a slot is
used for a second E1 ingress card
Dual ac or dc power supplies
Slot cards in an APX 1000 unit connect to each other via the backplane. The shelf controller
manages the system and interacts with the slot cards.

APX 1000™ Getting Started Guide 1-3
Table 1-1 describes the combinations of ingress, egress, and DSP slot cards that make up the
four primary configurations of the APX 1000. For additional details about these cards, see
Appendix B, “Slot Card Specifications.”
Note: Although it is physically possible to place slot cards from other members of the APX
product line in the APX 1000, they are not supported for use in the APX 1000. Only slot cards
sold with the APX 1000 as part of the following configurations are supported.
APX 1000 shelf
The APX 1000 chassis is referred to as a shelf. It unifies all components into an operational
unit. The APX 1000 shelf contains one slot for the shelf controller, five slots for slot cards, and
two power supply bays. The backplane contains multiple buses that interconnect all slots.
APX 1000 slot cards for primary configurations
Table 1-2 lists the slot cards supporting the primary configurations of an APX 1000 unit and
identifies the port speed and port capacity for each card type. For detailed slot card
descriptions, see Appendix B, “Slot Card Specifications.”
