How to Extract Environmental Samples using the EDGE
Introduction
SVOCs are a class of compounds with high molecular weights and boiling points. They are commonly monitored in soil based upon
EPA 3545A. Extractions done on the EDGE meet the requirements of this EPA method. Please use this method to follow EPA 3545A.
Sample Types
Soil of all types
Sample Preparation
1. Assemble a Q-Cup with the S1 stack of Q-Discs (C9+G1+C9).
2. Weigh up to the desired amount of sample into the Q-Cup directly. The sample should not go above the waistband of the Q-
Cup.
Note: Is your sample wet? Please do not use Q-Matrix Hydra in this application, as Q-Matrix Hydra does not bind
water above 80 °C. For applications support for this sample type, please contact Molecular Support.
3. Place a Q-Screen on top of the sample, and compress the screen into the Q-Cup using the Q-Screen tool.
EDGE Extraction
4. Prepare the EDGE by priming a solvent line with Hexane/Acetone (1:1) or desired solvent.
5. Program the EDGE method stated below using Hexane/Acetone (1:1) or desired solvent.
6. Extract the sample using the EDGE method below
Post Extraction Work Up
7. Remove the extract vial from the rack.
Note: If the extract is cloudy, this likely indicates that there is water in the extract. Please contact Molecular Support
for guidance on how to remove this water.
8. Dry down to 10 mL or the desired volume using an evaporator at the desired temperature.
9. Transfer sample to GC vial, and analyze using GC-MS.
Method Development Tips
If recovery is lower than expected with this method consider increasing hold time. Lastly, consider varying temperature based
on the temperament of the desired analytes.
If samples to be extracted are wet and you are having issues with clogging, draining, or seeing water in your final extract,
please contact Molecular Support, who will guide you through what options you have for water removal.
If you recovery of low volatile compounds is low please contract Molecular Support, who will guide you through what options
you have to avoid this.
If the soil samples being extracted are oily, please mix with 1 g of diatomaceous earth.
