DESCRIPTION
The ADTRAN
®
MX3216 Controller Card is a plug-in unit for the MX3 Chassis (P/N 1189001L1) that
provides sixteen DSX-1 drops from up to two DS3s. The remaining DS1s can be routed between the DS3s
or to optional drop modules in the MX3 Chassis. Two MX3216 Controller Cards are used together to
provide a redundant circuit. Features of the MX3216 Controller include the following:
NOTE: The MX3216 Controller Card is only to be used with MX3 Chassis revision B or later.
CAUTION: The MX3216 Controller Card requires that the MX3 Fan Module (P/N 1189007L1) be
installed in the MX3 Chassis in sites where the temperature can exceed 50°C. For
applications with ambient temperatures below 50°C, the MX3 Fan Module is not required.
The MX3 Chassis with the fans installed is not intended to be deployed in Central Offices or
similar network facilities where the Telcordia GR-63-CORE or ANSI T1.319-2002 shelf
level burn test is required.
INSTALLATION AND TURNUP
Ensure all MX3 Chassis wiring has been completed. The MX3216 Controller Card uses the following
MX3 rear panel connections:
BNC IN/OUT pairs A and B for DS3 A and DS3 B
T/R (IN)/(OUT) amphenol connectors, pins 1-16 and 33-48 for DSX-1 ports 1-16
AUX INPUTS 1-8 for auxiliary alarms 1-4. These pins sense open and closed relay contacts. These pins
are not polarity sensitive.
ALARM CONTACTS for critical, major, and minor alarms
NOTE: For the second and third bulleted items above, see the tables in the Pin Assignments section on
the reverse page.
After unpacking the unit, inspect it for damage. If damage has occurred, file a claim with the carrier, then
contact ADTRAN Customer Service. Refer to the Warranty.
WARNING: For configurations utilizing a single MX3216 Controller Card, the empty controller card
slot must be occupied by a Blank Plug (P/N 1189005L1).
This module occupies a controller slot in the MX3 Chassis. Follow the steps listed below to install the
MX3216 Controller Card.
1. Pull the ejector latches at the left and right sides of the MX3216 Controller Card front panel from their
latched or closed positions.
2. Gently, but firmly, slide the MX3216 Controller Card into the upper or lower controller card slot
taking note of the left and right guide grooves in the chassis. Simultaneously, apply thumb pressure at
the left (on the ADTRAN logo) and right (on the part number) of the MX3216 Controller Card to
ensure a good seat of the MX3216 Controller Card pins into the backplane connector.
3. Push the ejector latches to the left/right against the front panel until they latch.
4. The MX3216 Controller Card initializes and begins a self-test upon insertion into an active MX3
Chassis. When the self-test completes, the LEDs reflect the true state of the MX3216 Controller Card.

CONNECT AND LOGON
Use the front panel RS-232 DB-9 connector on the active controller to provision the MX3216 system
via a VT100 terminal or VT100 terminal emulation software such as HyperTerminal or ProComm Plus.
Provision terminal port as follows:
Data Rate: any up to 115200 bps
Asynchronous Data Format: eight data bits, no parity (none), one stop bit, and no flow control
The default username and password are “ADMIN” and “PASSWORD” in all caps.
PIN ASSIGNMENTS
WARNING: The T/R (DSX-1) interfaces MUST NOT be metallically connected to interfaces which
connect to the Outside Plant or its wiring. These interfaces are designed for use as intra-
building interfaces only. The addition of Primary Protectors is not sufficient protection in
order to connect these interfaces metallically to OSP wiring.
QUICK SETUP MENU
To simplify the installation process, all of the basic configuration options necessary to get the MX3216
running are grouped together on the Quick Setup menu.
After installing the unit and successfully logging on, the Main menu appears. Select option 3,

The Quick Setup menu allows configuration of such items as DSX-1 drop assignments, module DS1
assignments if they are installed, as well as system date, time, and IP address information.
To enable a DSX-1 drop (T/R on the Amp Connector), select the appropriate DS1 Port (options 1-16) and
then select the tributary DS1 (DS3 and its associated DS1).
If an optional module is installed, follow the same procedure to connect it to the proper tributary DS1s.
Options 17 - 22 are used to set the system name, date, and time. System IP information can be set as well
so that the Ethernet ports may be used.
COMPLIANCE
The MX3216 Controller Card complies with the requirements covered under UL 60950 and NEBS Level
3. It is intended to be installed in restricted access areas only.
