General information

1. General information

1.1 Intended use

The content of this Short Guide only applies to the Mobile Scanner Gryphon™ GM4100-HC.

1.2 Preface

The optional mobile scanner Gryphon™ GM4100-HC facilitates the registration of virtual work place

names during routine operation on the cobas p 612 and cobas p 612. At this, manual inputs are

substituted by scanning a barcode label attached to the rack.

By working with virtual work place names, you can assign individual designations to racks and

subracks during operation, independently from their original work place name. Especially when dealing

with labeled archive racks, this can be used to facilitate the samples' retrieval by adding the label's

content (barcode or textual name) to the work place name within the LI-record towards the host.

The installation described below may be performed by a trained service technician or likewise

qualified personnel only!

General information

1.3 Safety guidelines

Roche PVT GmbH explicitly points out that all safety regulations concerning handling devices of the

protection class I (protective earth conductor) must be heeded. It should be strictly avoided to work

within the housing with the mains switch turned on. If this would become necessary regardless, the

work must be carried out by trained and qualified personnel only, abiding all safety regulations.

DANGER

Electrical Shock!

Disconnect the mains power supply before working inside the device.

Also make sure that it cannot be reconnected during your work.

Among others, these parts are supplied by mains:

• Rear side of the connector panel (mains connector)

• Line filter

• Power Distribution Module (PDM)

The following instructions should strictly be heeded when putting the system into operation and when

repairs are carried out by a service technician:

• Do not remove any parts of the housing, before it is ensured that the system has been

disconnected from the mains!

• When specific service or repair work on the internal components has to be carried out with the

system still being connected to the mains, be careful not to touch any live parts or connectors inside

the housing.

• While the system is in operation, a disconnection or loose contact on the protective earth conductor

inside or outside the instrument constitutes a potentially lethal danger. Intentional disconnection or

removal of the protective earth conductor therefore is prohibited.

1.4 Disposal

The device must be disposed of in compliance with the respective national and international laws and

regulations.

Replacing the previous mobile scanner (optional)

2. Replacing the previous mobile scanner (optional)

If the older mobile scanner Gryphon Mx30 is installed in the system, both its base station and retainer

must be replaced by the new versions.

NOTICE

To detach the RJ45 cable insert a paper clip into the hole on the base station as shown in Figure 3.

The base station may be affixed to the bottom with double-faced adhesive tape.

When detaching the retainer, it must be ensured that the nuts behind

the front panel are prevented from falling into the system.

If the device is to be disposed of, this must be done in compliance with

current environmental legislation.

1. Remove the Gryphon Mx30 base station.

(If mounted with double-faced adhesive tape, check that no residues of the adhesive remain and

remove if necessary.

2. Detach the power supply cable looped into plug ST43 and the I/O-B2 board and reconnect the

original plug to ST43. Unclip the power cable and remove if from the system.

3. Replace the retainer likewise described in Chapter

3.2.

3. Installation

3.1 Preparation

In order to mount the Gryphon™ GM4100-HC retainer to the housing of the cobas p 612/ cobas p 512,

these tools will be required:

• Allen screwdriver 2.5 mm

• Phillips screwdriver PH1

• ratchet, 7 mm socket on extension

• cordless drill with metal drill bit ∅ 2.5 mm

• M3 tap

• 2 screws M3 x 6 mm, zinc-plated steel with washers

DANGER

Danger of infection!

Always cleanse the work area with an disinfecting agent!

3.2 Mounting the retainer to the Output Sorter

1. Turn off the system and disconnect the mains plug.

2. Remove both the upper and the lower maintenance cover on the right side of the housing.

3. Unplug the power supply of the green status indicator inside the front panel.

NOTICE

The lamp socket is just snapped in ('SnapIn' design). In order to avoid damaging the socket's

grating, please hold it in place when removing the power supply wires or plugging them in.

4. On the inside of the housing, unscrew all ten nuts holding the front panel and take the panel off the

housing.

NOTICE

If available, use tools with a magnetic lock. Otherwise, a nut could fall off the tip of the wrench

socket and into a concealed area of the housing below, where it cannot be easily retrieved from.

NOTICE

Be advised that the front panel is held only by these nuts.

Therefore hold the panel with your hand before unscrewing the last remaining nut!

5. Drill two holes (Ø 2.5 mm) for the retainer into the front panel and tap them. Use the following

measures:

6. Mount the retainer onto the front panel according to

Figure 9.

7. Reattach the front panel onto the housing and reapply the nuts.

8. Reconnect the power supply of the green status indicator inside the front panel.

9. Reattach the maintenance covers on the right side of the housing.

3.3 Installation of the base station

1. Open the cabinet below the pipetting unit (cobas p 612) or the output sorter (cobas p 512) and put

in the scanner's base station. Underneath the base station, plug in the power supply wedge and

the keyboard interface wedge. Route both wedges upwards towards the cable duct above.

2. Detach the power supply on socket ST28 and plug it into the matching socket of the wedge. Then

connect the wedge with the socket ST28 again. Then, reconnect the plug of the power supply

cable to pin ST28.

3. Route the keyboard interface wedge through the cable duct to the left behind the QNX control

computer (below the input sorter).

4. Connect the 12 V DC plug with the base station.

5. The next step varies depending on whether the affected system is equipped with an optional

QS I computer or not.

a. System without QS I

The keyboard is connected directly to the QNX control computer. Unplug the purple PS/2

connector there and connect it to the corresponding socket on the base station's keyboard

interface wedge. Then plug the wedge into the QNX control computer:

b. System equipped with optional QS I

The keyboard is connected to both computer via a KVM switch. Unplug the purple PS/2

connector at the QNX control computer and connect it to the corresponding socket on the base

station's keyboard interface wedge. Then plug the wedge into the QNX computer:

NOTICE

Closely retain to this wiring schematic, and do not patch the wedge between the keyboard

and the KVM switch. This would render the switch inoperable.

3.4 cobas p 612/ cobas p 512 software configuration

After the mobile scanner has been installed, reactivate the system and log in using service technician

credentials.

NOTICE

If the scanner won't function properly now (or later during operation), adjust its configuration

according to the descriptions in chapter

3.4.

1. Navigate to 'Reference data' ► 'Work places' and invoke the first work place the mobile scanner is

supposed to be used on.

2. Change the entry at 'Virtual work place name' (see

Figure 16) from "0" to "1" and confirm with the

[OK] button.

3. Repeat these steps on every work place the mobile scanner is supposed to be used on.

Routine operation

4. Routine operation

As soon as the system has finished its initialization at the start of a work cycle, the system opens any

drawer of the output sorter containing a (sub)rack which utilizes virtual work place names

(refer to chapter 3.4 for details). A message will pop up requesting you to enter the racks' virtual work

place name.

Utilize the mobile scanner to read the barcodes on the corresponding racks. Close the drawer(s) again

in order to resume operation.

NOTICE

The barcode must not contain blanks or special characters (like *, /, ; ?,...).

With every change of an affected rack during operation, a renewed input is necessary for the

replacement rack. However, the system will not allow you to reuse virtual work place names previously

assigned. Only after a data reorganization ('Routine' ► 'Clear Data'), the list of already used virtual

work place names is deleted, and any previously used designation will be available again.

Virtual rack names, along with their original counterparts, are stored in the 'vname' subdirectory and

also shown on the 'Routine' ► 'Sorting Lists' report view.

In addition to the original work place name, virtual work place names are transmitted to the host as part

of the LI-record as well. The record will show both the original name and the virtual one, separated by a

circumflex "ˆ".

Subracks

If the affected work place has been divided into multiple subracks, the procedure described above

remains the same. But instead of the virtual work place name utilized for the whole work place, now

each subrack's virtual name will be required.

5. Configuration of the mobile scanner

The information below is, in a more general form, also contained within the original DATALOGIC

Product Reference Guide as well.

NOTICE

Complete reconfiguration is not mandatory for the first use of the mobile scanner. If a complete

reconfiguration should be required, please refer to the DATALOGIC Product Reference Guide;

page 33 ’Restore Custom Defaults’.

5.1 Connecting to the base station

Before configuring the mobile scanner it is necessary to link it with the base station.

Optional: If the reader was previously linked to another base station, you must first scan the Unlink

action command before relinking to the new base station (see DATALOGIC Product Reference Guide;

page 24).

• To link the mobile scanner and the base station, press the trigger to wake it and place it on the

base station.

• Next, proceed to the corresponding section in this manual to configure any desired settings and

features associated with that interface.

5.2 Keyboard settings

Since the scanner's base station is connected to the system by means of a keyboard wedge, the

keyboard must be set as well. Use the mobile scanner to read the respective barcodes.

5.3 Disabling symbologies

Prior to configuring the mobile scanner, any pre-installed symbologies should be disabled. Use the

mobile scanner to read the following barcodes (see DATALOGIC Product Reference Guide; page 108):

• 'ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE'

• 'Disable All Symbologies'

Proceed by configuring the utilized barcode type(s) as described above.

5.4 Configuring barcodes

Barcodes have to be set in accordance with the barcode types used for virtual work place names, so

they will be faultlessly recognized during routine operation. The system is capable of utilizing the

different types of barcodes concurrently.

The following summary contains the most common types of barcodes:
