Thedockisaportableexpansionmodulethatenablesyoutoeasilyconnectyournotebookcomputertothe

simultaneouslysupportsuptotwoexternalmonitorswiththemaximumresolutionof2048x1152pixels,and

Afteryouhaveconnectedthedocktoyournotebookcomputer,youcaninstallthedevicedriveronthe
SoftwareandUserGuideCD.

ToinstallthedevicedriverontheWindowsXP,WindowsVista,orWindows7operatingsystem,dothe
following:
1.Saveanyopendocumentsandexitallapplications.
2.InserttheSoftwareandUserGuideCDanddooneofthefollowing:
IftheCDstartsautomatically,gotostep3.
IftheAutoPlaywindowopens,clickRunstart.bat.Then,gotostep3.
IftheCDdoesnotstartautomatically,gointoMyComputerorComputer,browsetheCD/DVD
drive,anddouble-clickStart.bat.
3.Selectyourlanguage.
4.Ontheleftsideofthewindow,clickSoftware.
5.Followtheinstructionsonthescreen.
6.Restartyourcomputerafterthecompletionmessageisdisplayed.Thesystemwillautomaticallyidentify
andcongurethedock.Thevideooutputfunctionofthedockwillbeautomaticallyenabledafterthe
congurationiscompleted.
UninstallingthedevicedriverfromWindowsoperatingsystems
ThissectionprovidesinstructionsonhowtouninstallthedevicedriverfromtheWindowsXP,Windows
Vista,orWindows7operatingsystem.
Touninstallthedevicedriver,dothefollowing:
1.Exitallapplicationsthatusethedock.
2.ClickStartAllProgramsThinkPadUSB3.0DockUninstallThinkPadUSB3.0Dock.
3.Followtheinstructionsonthescreentouninstallthedevicedriver.

Thischapterprovidesinformationonhowtousetheheadsetandmicrophonecombojack,GigabitEthernet
connector,USBconnectors,andvideooutputconnectorsonthedock.
Youcanconnectdevicestotheappropriateconnectorsonthedockwhileyournotebookcomputeris
started.Normallyitwilltakeseveralsecondsforthenotebookcomputertorecognizenewdevices.
Usingtheheadsetandmicrophonecombojack
Theheadsetandmicrophonecombojackonthedockisa3.5mmmicrophonecombinedstereoline-out
jack.Itonlyworksforthestandard3.5mmheadsetormicrophone.
Tousetheheadsetandmicrophonecombojackonthedock,connectyourheadset,microphone,orspeaker
totheheadsetandmicrophonecombojack.
Note:Theheadsetandmicrophonecombojackonthedockareautomaticallyenabledwhenyouhave
successfullyconnectedthedocktoyournotebookcomputerandinstalledthedevicedriver.However,ifyou
cannothearanythingfromtheheadsetconnectedtotheheadsetandmicrophonecombojackonthedock,
youcanmanuallyenabletheheadsetandmicrophonecombojackonthedock.See“Manuallyenablingthe

UsingtheGigabitEthernetconnector
TousetheGigabitEthernetconnectoronthedock,connectthedocktostandard10Mbps,100Mbps,or
1000Mbpsnetwork,andwaituntilthedockisfullyconguredbytheWindowsoperatingsystem.
TheGigabitEthernetconnectiononthedockfullysupportstheThinkVantage
®
AccessConnectionsprogram.
UsingtheUSBconnectors
TousetheUSBconnectors,connectaUSBdevicetoanyoftheveUSBconnectorsonthedockwitha
USBcable.
WhentheUSBdeviceiscorrectlyconnectedtoaUSBconnectoronthedock,aninformationwindowwill
bedisplayedintheWindowsnoticationarea,indicatingthattheUSBdevicehasbeenconnectedtothe
computer.
UsingtheUSB3.0connectorwithbatterychargingfunction
TheUSB3.0connectorwithbatterychargingfunctionenablesyoutochargeUSBdevicesevenwhenthe
computerisinsleeporhibernationmode,orthedockisdisconnectedfromthecomputer.
Notes:
1.MostofthemobiledevicescanbechargedbytheUSB3.0connectorwithbatterychargingfunction,
butsomedeviceswithspecialcongurationmightnotbecharged.

ThevideooutputconnectorsonthedockconsistofoneDVI-DvideooutputconnectorandoneDVI-Ivideo
outputconnector.Youcansimultaneouslyconnecttwoexternalmonitorstothedockusingthetwovideo
outputconnectors.Youdonothavetodisconnectthedockfromyournotebookcomputereachtimewhen
youconnecttheexternalmonitorstothevideooutputconnectors.
Tousethevideooutputconnectors,connecttheDVIcableoftheexternalmonitorstothevideooutput
connectorsonthedock.
YoualsocanconnectanexternalmonitorwithaVGAconnectortothedockusingaDVI-ItoVGAadapter.
TousetheDVI-ItoVGAadapter,dothefollowing:
1.ConnecttheDVI-ItoVGAadaptertotheDVI-Ivideooutputconnectoronthedock.
2.TightenthetwoscrewsontheDVI-ItoVGAadapter.

Identifyingyourmonitors
Ifyouaresimultaneouslyconnectingtwoexternalmonitorstoyournotebookcomputerusingthedock,click
theThinkPadUSB3.0DockiconintheWindowsnoticationarea,andyoumightseemenusnamedas2.
ThinkPadUSB3.0Dockor4.ThinkPadUSB3.0Dock.Theserialnumbersatthebeginningofthemenus
areautomaticallyandrandomlyassignedbytheWindowsoperatingsystem,whichcanhelpyoumatchthe
menuswiththecorrespondingmonitors.Selectthemonitorthatyouwanttocongure,andthenyoucan
congurethecolorquality,thescreenrotation,thescreenresolution,andthevideooutputmodesforthe
selectedmonitorthroughthesubmenuoptionsunderthecorrespondingmenu.Beforedoinganymonitor
conguration,youneedtorstlyidentifyyourmonitors.
Toidentifyyourmonitors,dothefollowing:
1.ClicktheThinkPadUSB3.0DockiconintheWindowsnoticationarea.Apop-upmenuopens.
2.SelectVideoSetup.Awindowopens.
3.Right-clickthemonitornumbericonasyouwantinthetoppanel,andthenselectIdentify.Theselected
monitornumberisdisplayedonthecorrespondingmonitorscreen.Ifyouwanttoidentifyallmonitors
atatime,dependingontheoperatingsystemyouareusing,clickIdentifyorIdentifyallinthetop
rightcornerofthewindow.
Understandingthevideooutputmodes

Bydefault,thedockworksinextendmode.
Extendmode
Whenthedockisinextendmode,itsplitsyourdisplayacrossmultiplemonitors.
Therearethreeoptionswhenyouareusingextendmode:
Extend:Whenyouselectthisoption,yournotebookcomputermonitorbecomestheprimarydisplay
andtheexternalmonitor(s)becomethesecondarydisplay(s),andtheexternalmonitordisplay(s)areon
therightsideofthenotebookcomputermonitordisplaybydefault.
ExtendTo:Whenyouselectthisoption,yournotebookcomputermonitorbecomestheprimarydisplay
andtheexternalmonitor(s)becomethesecondarydisplay(s).Youcangiveeachmonitoritsownframe
bufferthroughthesubmenuoptionsRight,Left,Above,andBeloworthroughdragoperations.The
displayspaceisacontinuousarea;therefore,windowsandobjectscanbemovedbetweendifferent
displays,orevenstraddledacrossmultipledisplays.
SetasMainMonitor:Whenyouselectthisoption,theexternalmonitor(s)becometheprimarydisplay(s)

turnsoffandthedisplayoftheexternalmonitorturnson.
Note:Thisoptionisavailablewhenthereisonlyoneexternalmonitorconnectedtothedock.
Off:Whenyouselectthisoption,thedisplayofexternalmonitor(s)turnoffandthedisplayofyour
notebookcomputermonitorturnson.However,theotherfunctionssuchasaudio,Ethernet,andUSB

docks.Forexample,ifyouuseanotebookcomputerbothathomeandatwork,youcansetupbothwork
areaswithdocks.Then,youjustconnectyournotebookcomputertothedockateitherlocation,and
youarereadytowork.
Checkingforupdates
ThisfeatureenablesyoutocheckwhetherthereisanyupdateforthedevicedriverintheWindows7
operatingsystem.
Tocheckforupdates,dothefollowing:

RotatedLeft:Theexternalmonitordisplayrotate90degreestotheleft.
RotatedRight:Theexternalmonitordisplayrotate90degreestotheright.
Upside-Down:Theexternalmonitordisplaybecomeupside-down.
Note:Foranormaldisplay,youcancontinuallyclickRotatedLeftorRotatedRightuntilthedisplay
becomesupside-down.
Settingthecolorqualityoftheexternalmonitor
Thedockenablesyoutoselectatargetcolorqualityfortheexternalmonitordisplay.Theavailableoptions
are16-bitor32-bit.Bitmeansthecolordepthofthedisplay.Thedefaultandrecommendedsettingis32-bit.
Tosetthecolorqualityoftheexternalmonitor,dependingontheoperatingsystemyouareusing,doone
ofthefollowing:

1.ClicktheThinkPadUSB3.0DockiconintheWindowsnoticationarea.Apop-upmenuopens.
2.SelectThinkPadUSB3.0DockScreenResolution,andthenselectthedesiredscreenresolution
optionfortheexternalmonitor.Forexample,“2048x1152”meansthatthevideooutputresolution
willbe2048by1152pixels.
