Field-installed economizer accessories with the RRS Econo-
mizer Controller utilize the P12/S12 connector for inter-con-
necting wiring to the 3 through 6 ton units equipped with
Simplicity Lite in the same manner as Honeywell W7212 and
Jade controllers in economizer accessories. Through the
P12/S12 connector, the unit-to-RRS Economizer wiring con-
nections are as follows:
TB1 to RRS Economizer Controller C pin - Pro-
vides cabinet ground-referenced 24 volts AC com-
mon to power the RRS Economizer Controller,
economizer inputs and outputs
• Simplicity Lite G pin to RRS Economizer Con-
troller R pin - Provides 24 volts AC hot to power
the RRS Economizer Controller, economizer
inputs and outputs when Simplicity Lite operates
the indoor blower
Simplicity Lite OCC pin to RRS Economizer
Controller OCC pin - 24 volts AC originating from
jumper or thermostat input to the Simplicity Lite
OCC screw terminal, through the Simplicity Lite
OCC output pin to the RRS Economizer Controller
Simplicity Lite Y1 pin to RRS Economizer Con-
troller Y1 pin - 24 volts AC originating from ther-
mostat input to the Simplicity Lite Y1 screw
terminal, through the Simplicity Lite Y1 output pin
to the RRS Economizer Controller Y1 pin input

Other than inter-connection to the base unit, the 14-pin con-
nector at the upper edge of the RRS Economizer Controller
has connections for the economizer damper actuator
included with field installed economizer accessories. Power
for the actuator is provided through the - (24 volts AC com-
mon/DC-) and + (24 volts AC hot) pins. The +2 to +10 volts
DC, as configured for 3 through 6 ton economizer accesso-
ries, from the DMP output pin positions the actuator. The +2
to +10 volts DC, as configured for 3 through 6 ton economizer
accessories, from the actuator position feedback is received
at the DFB input pin. The DFB input is utilized for California
Title 24-type actuator position alarming when the RRS Econ-
omizer Controller parameter [Fault Detect En] is set to
Enable.
FIGURE 3 -
Simplified Diagram Of RRS Economizer Control Temperature Sensor And Humidity Sensor
Wiring Connections
Field-installed economizer accessories with the RRS Econo-
mizer Controller include an outdoor air temperature (OAT)
sensor and outdoor air humidity (OAH) sensor, combined in
single assembly, as well as a supply air temperature (SAT)
sensor. Optional dual enthalpy kits for field installed econo-
mizer accessories with the RRS Economizer Controller add a
return air temperature (RAT) sensor and return air humidity
(RAH) sensor combined in single assembly.
The supply air temperature sensor, the outdoor air tempera-
ture portion of the OAT/OAH sensor, and the return air tem-
perature portion of the optional RAT/RAH sensor connect to
terminals near the lower-left corner of the RRS Economizer
Controller. These temperature sensors are Type III, 10,000
@ 77°F, negative temperature coefficient thermistors.
Connections for the outdoor air humidity (OAH) portion of the
OAT/OAH sensor and the return air humidity portion of the
optional RAT/RAH sensor are located to the right of the tem-
perature sensor terminals on the lower edge of the RRS
Economizer Controller. The RRS Economizer Controller pro-
vides power for these sensors through the corresponding C
(24 volts AC common/DC-) and R (24 volts AC hot) terminals.
The 0 to 10 volts DC over a 0 to 100% RH span sensors pro-
vide volts DC+ input to the corresponding OAH or RAH termi-
nal of the RRS Economizer Controller. The RRS Economizer
Controller calculates enthalpy for free cooling changeover
from temperature and humidity inputs.
The 6-pin connector at the upper edge of the RRS Econo-
mizer Controller has connections for other optional inputs.
The RRS Economizer Controller provides power for the
indoor air quality (IAQ) sensor through the corresponding C
(24 volts AC common/DC-) and R (24 volts AC hot) pins. The
0 to 10 volts DC over a 0 to 2000 ppm CO2 span sensor pro-
vides volts DC+ input to the IAQ pin of the RRS Economizer
Controller. The IAQ input is utilized when single-input
demand ventilation function is desired. 24 volts AC hot to the
SD input pin causes shutdown of all economizer functions.
The 6-pin connector at the upper edge of the RRS Econo-
mizer Controller also has connection for integration of non-
modulating power exhaust or exhaust recovery ventilator
accessories. Primarily determined by the RRS Economizer
Controller parameter [Exhaust Setup] selection, the 24 volts
AC hot from the ERV-EXH output pin provides switching for
control of non-modulating power exhaust/exhaust recovery
ventilator accessories.

RRS Economizer Controller Quick Start Guide 3
Intended to be used with field-built remote alarm indication, a
dry contact between the ALM and ALMCOM terminals at the
lower edge of the RRS Economizer Controller closes when
Alarms are active. The contact is rated at 12 amps for circuits
of 125 volts AC or less.
The USB port at the upper edge of the RRS Economizer
Controller is for connection of a flash drive (or “thumb drive”)
used with several functions in the “Update” section of the
parameter menu.
The LEDs at the center-left of the RRS Economizer Controller
indicate as follows:
POWER (green) - Is lit whenever 24 volts AC power is
present to the RRS Economizer Controller C and R pins.
FAULT (red) - Is lit, then flashes during the boot-up
sequence of the RRS Economizer Controller. Will not be
lit when there are no Alarms active. Will double-flash/
pause continuously when Alarms are active.
SA BUS (green) - Will not be lit (has no function in the
BASIC model of the RRS Economizer Controller used
with field-installed economizer accessories for 3 through
6 ton units).
Technicians access the control parameters of the RRS Econ-
omizer Controller through the four buttons and display in the
center of the controller.
RRS ECONOMIZER CONTROLLER BOOT-UP
SEQUENCE
The RRS Economizer Controller boot-up sequence begins
when unit indoor blower operation is initiated; there is output
from the Simplicity Lite G pin so 24 volts AC power is present
to the RRS Economizer Controller C and R pins. A boot-up
sequence will also begin at the completion of the firmware
update process and restore process.
NOTE: With RRS Economizer Controller usage, the Simplic-
ity Lite [Fan On Delay: Cool] parameter is not effec-
tive and must remain at the default setting of 0
seconds. Simplicity Lite operation of the compressor
cannot begin until the RRS Economizer Controller
boot-up sequence is completed and the [Cmp Min
Off Time] timer expires (approximately 1 minute, 16
seconds after power is applied to the RRS Econo-
mizer Controller). In situations where the indoor fan
cycles with cooling operation and the unit is pow-
ered-up; operation of the compressor cannot begin
until the Simplicity Lite compressor ASCD expires,
the RRS Economizer Controller boot-up sequence is
completed and the [Cmp Min Off Time] timer expires
(a total minimum of approximately 6 minutes, 16 sec-
onds after power is applied to the unit). If Y1 thermo-
stat input is present, Simplicity Lite will display flash
code 11 during the RRS Economizer Controller boot-
up sequence and the [Cmp Min Off Time] timer
period.

RRS ECONOMIZER CONTROLLER PARAMETER
MENU FUNCTIONS
There are several “conditionalparameters within the menu.
Parameters for temperature, humidity and CO
2
inputs are
only shown in the menu once sensor presence has been
detected. Parameters associated with a function are only
shown in the menu when that function is enabled.
The values of status parameters, binary inputs and binary
outputs update in the menu approximately 5 seconds after
the point of value change. The buffered values in use for con-
trol sequences, rather than the “raw” inputs, are shown in the
menu for analog inputs. Since changes are at a relatively
slow rate, the values for analog outputs shown in the menu
are nearly “real time”.
Set-point parameter settings within the menu, like the
[Damper Min Pos] example below, are typically shown as a
numeric value with appropriate limits on the available range.
Configuration parameter settings within the menu are typi-
cally shown as “Yes” / “No”, “Enable” / “Disable”, etc. or as a
list of available selections. The range of available selections
are shown in red text to the right of set-point and configura-
tion parameters listed in the “RRS Economizer Controller
Menu Guide”.
FIGURE 8 -
Selecting A Parameter To Change
From a set-point or configuration parameter, setting change
is initiated by pressing the (enter) button. The display back-
light will then flash on and off to indicate setting change activ-
ity is in progress.
FIGURE 9 -
Changing A Parameter Value Using The
Up And Down Buttons
With setting change activity in progress, presses of the
(scroll up) button increase the numeric setting or scroll
through the list of available settings, presses of the (scroll
down) button decrease the numeric setting or scroll through
the list of available settings.
FIGURE 10 -
Completing The Parameter Value
Change
A press of the (enter) button stores the new setting in the
controller for immediate use and the display back-light will
then stop flashing to indicate setting change activity has
ended.
A press of the esc (cancel) button retains the previous setting
in the controller and the display back-light will then stop flash-
ing to indicate setting change activity has ended.
NOTE: When making changes to configuration parameter
settings that influence the conditional parameters
shown in the menu section, allow the menu to
refresh by using the esc (cancel) button to navigate
away one or two levels then navigate back to the
menu section.
FIGURE 11 -
Scrolling Of Long Text
Longer text of some parameter values can exceed the side-
scrolling capability of the display. Other than set-point and
configuration parameters, the full text of longer-named
parameter values is viewed and text side-scrolling is slowed
when the (enter) button is held. (The example shown
above is the result of a “Variable Frequency Fan” setting
incorrectly selected for the [Exhaust Setup] configuration on
the RRS Economizer Controller)
FUNCTIONS IN THE “UPDATE” SECTION OF THE
RRS ECONOMIZER CONTROLLER PARAMETER
MENU
Several functions in the “Update” section of the parameter
menu use a flash drive (or “thumb drive”) connected to the
controller USB port. If the sequence that follows does not
occur when the flash drive is connected to the USB port, it is

patible with controller flash drive functions.
FIGURE 12 - Firmware Update
When both a compatible flash drive is connected to the USB
port and there is navigation within/re-entering the “Update”
section of the parameter menu, “USB: Wait” will briefly be
shown on the top line of the display.
Then, the top line of the display will show “USB:OK”; the
number following “Scan” on the bottom line of the display
indicates the number of files and folders in the top level of the
flash drive storage.
Once the scan is complete, leave the flash drive connected to
the USB port so it will be available for other functions. A press
of the (scroll up) or (scroll down) button will then resume
navigation in the Update section of the menu.
BACKUP FUNCTION
Without a flash drive connected to the USB port, the steps
listed below for the Backup function only update the “Backup-
Config” restoration file held in controller on-board memory.
FIGURE 13 - File Backup Function
With a compatible flash drive connected to the USB port, the
(enter) button is pressed when at (Level 1) “Update” >
(Level 2) “Backup” location of the display menu.
“Backing” on the upper line and “UP” on the lower line of the
display may be briefly observed immediately after the
(enter) button is pressed.
While the Backup is in progress, “Backup:Wait” alternating
with a countdown timer will be shown on the upper line and
an increasing percentage following “Backup” will be shown
on the lower line of the display.
In approximately 10 seconds, “Backup:OK” on the upper line
and “Backup 100%” will be shown on the lower line of the dis-
play when the Backup function is complete. The flash drive
may be then be removed from the USB port if not needed for
other functions. A press of the esc (cancel), (scroll up) or
(scroll down) button will then resume menu navigation.
FIGURE 14 -

Files on a Flash Drive
With each completed Backup, a comma separated value
(.csv) restoration file is created in the top level of the flash
drive storage. The “BackupConfig” restoration file held in con-
troller on board memory is also updated. The restoration file
is a “snapshot” of menu parameter values and settings in the
controller at the moment the restoration file was created. The
restoration file size is typically less than 25 KB. Restoration
files may be moved, copied, e-mailed, etc. like other com-
puter files. The file name is drawn from the [Model Name]
and time in the controller at the moment the restoration file
was created.
FIGURE 16 -
Restoration File Name Structure
The time used in restoration file names describes the time
since controller boot-up. The time kept by the controller
restarts with each boot-up sequence and begins at 00:00:00
January 1st 1970 (1970-01-01T000000 as shown in the res-
toration file name).
The default 20-character [Model Name] data is loaded in con-
troller production. Changing the [Model Name] within the res-
toration file and then loading the change to the controller
through the Restore function can be utilized when unique
naming is desired.
FIGURE 17 -
Flash Files
Along with [Model Name], the data of restoration files can be
viewed and edited in spreadsheet programs such as Micro-
soft Excel or Open Office Calc. Editing offers the means to
create custom restoration files for use with the Restore func-
tion. When editing restoration files:
Only the data in the Value column can be edited.
The restoration file name structure must remain intact if
saving the edited restoration file with a different name.
Blank data in the Label column of the restoration file indicates
conditional parameters that were not in use at the time the
Backup function was performed. The restoration file parame-
ters having blank data are not carried forward when the
Restore function is performed; the existing settings of those
parameters are not affected in the controller being restored.
RESTORE FUNCTION
Without a compatible flash drive connected to the USB port,
the steps listed below for the Restore function can only use
the “BackupConfig” restoration file held in controller on-board
memory.

Process
The boot-up sequence initiated by Firmware Update includes
an automatic Restore from the “BackupConfig” restoration file
held in controller on-board memory. Note that any parame-
ters added by the Firmware Update process will not be
affected by the automatic Restore feature and will have the
factory default settings. Analog input presence indicators are
also reset in the Firmware Update process.
The Firmware Update process is completed and controller
operation begins when the boot-up sequence ends. A press
of the esc (cancel), (scroll up) or (scroll down) button
will then begin menu navigation.
EXPORT TREND
Trend data is stored in non-volatile memory of the controller
is retained through the boot-up sequence. From boot-up, the
controller trend file data is continuously accumulated until the
trend sample/status change limits are reached. The sample
intervals and sampling limits for analog parameter values
allow 7 days of accumulated trend data. The newest data
overwrites the oldest data after the trend sample/status
change limits are reached.
Controller clock time is used for timestamping of trend data
and triggers the trend sample intervals for analog inputs.
Controller clock time begins at 1/1/1970 12:00:00 AM and
restarts with each boot-up sequence. Particularly in applica-
tions where the indoor fan cycles with heating and cooling

RRS ECONOMIZER CONTROLLER PARAMETER
CONFIGURATION FOR 3 THROUGH 6 TON PACK-
AGE UNITS
The descriptions in the Operation section assume the RRS
Economizer Controller is configured for proper interaction
with the Simplicity Lite board compressor control functions.
The lists that follow indicate factory default” parameter set-
tings; field review of these settings should be made if issues
of compressor control arise.
In the Details > Service > Factory menu location
• [Equipment Type] setting “Conv RTU”
• [Thermostat Type] setting “W”
• [Fan Control Type] setting “Single Speed”
• Lo Ambient En] setting “No”
In the Details > Control > Compressor >Setup menu
location
• [Comp Enable] setting “Yes”
• [Comp Stages] setting “1”
• [Cmp Min Off Time] setting “60 sec”
• [Cmp Min On Time] setting “60 sec”
• [Comp 1 Lockout] setting “Normal”
• [Lo Ambient En] setting “No”
NOTE: With RRS Economizer Controller usage, the Simplic-
ity Lite [Fan On Delay: Cool] parameter is not effec-
tive and must remain at the default setting of 0
seconds. Simplicity Lite operation of the compres-
sor cannot begin until the RRS Economizer Control-
ler boot-up sequence is completed and the [Cmp
Min Off Time] timer expires (approximately 1 min-
ute, 16 seconds after power is applied to the RRS
Economizer Controller). In situations where the
indoor fan cycles with cooling operation and the unit
is powered-up; operation of the compressor cannot
begin until the Simplicity Lite compressor ASCD
expires, the RRS Economizer Controller boot-up
sequence is completed and the [Cmp Min Off Time]
timer expires (a total minimum of approximately 6
minutes, 16 seconds after power is applied to the
unit). If Y1 thermostat input is present, Simplicity
Lite will display flash code 11 during the RRS Econ-
omizer Controller boot-up sequence and the [Cmp
Min Off Time] timer period.
The descriptions in the Operation section also assume the
RRS Economizer Controller is configured properly for the
economizer accessory used in 3 through 6 ton package units.
The lists that follow indicate “factory default” parameter set-
tings; field review of these settings should be made if issues
of economizer control arise.
In the Details > Service > Factory menu location.
• [Fresh Air Enable] setting “Off”
[Damper Min Value] setting “2 V”
• [Feedback Min Value] setting “2 V”
Additional configuration of the RRS Economizer Controller is
dependent on the options, features and functions desired for
the application. Configuration of the associated parameters is
described in the Operation section.
OPERATION
The RRS Economizer Controller provides minimum position
ventilation and free cooling functions through direct control of
the economizer actuator. Coordination of the compressor,
optional power exhaust and remote alarm indication is pro-
vided through contact switching.
The RRS Economizer Controller is powered with unit indoor
blower operation; there is output from the Simplicity Lite G pin
so 24 volts AC power is present to the RRS Economizer Con-
troller C and R pins. All outputs end and the spring-return
actuator utilized in economizer accessories returns to the OA
damper fully closed / RA damper fully open whenever power
is removed from the controller.
The RRS Economizer Controller monitors the voltage applied
to the C and R pins:
5292230-USG-B-0718
14 RRS Economizer Controller Quick Start Guide
FIGURE 34 - Voltage Conditions
Menu parameters describe settings and the 2-10 volt DC out-
put to the economizer actuator ([Damper Command]) as a
percentage of the outside air damper position:
“.0 %” = 2 volts DC output to the actuator / OA damper
fully closed / RA damper fully open
“100.0 %” = 10 volts DC output to the actuator / OA
damper fully open / RA damper fully closed
With the RRS Economizer Controller powered, when no
economizer ventilation function is active the output from the
controller to position the economizer actuator is 2 volts DC
([Damper Command] is “.0 %”).
When multiple economizer ventilation functions concurrently
request to position the economizer actuator, priority of the
function is first considered. The shutdown function has the
highest priority for economizer actuator position, as well as
other controller functions. Low ambient minimum position has
the highest priority of the minimum position functions. Without
these priority functions active, the ventilation function requir-
ing the greatest amount of outside air determines the 2-10
volt DC output from the controller to position the economizer
actuator.
NOTE: Since the most rapid rate of [Damper Command]
change is 1% every 2 seconds, time allowances
should be made when observing any re-positioning
of the economizer actuator.
24 volts AC input to the controller SD pin initiates the shut-
down function where:
The [Damper Command] is “.0 %”
All binary outputs (Y1O, ERV-EXH) are switched off
[Staged Out State] will indicate “Instant Shutdown”
[Comp Control Mode] will indicate “Instant Shutdown”
[Damper Mode] will indicate “Ramp Close”
[Shutdown] will indicate “Alarm”
Once 24 volts AC input to the controller SD pin is removed:
The [Damper Command] responds to positioning
requests
Y1O binary output can resume when the [Cmp Min Off
Time] timer expires
• Compressor operation can then resume when the
Simplicity Lite compressor ASCD expires
[Shutdown] will indicate “Normal”
The minimum position functions, free cooling, compressor
coordination and power exhaust/ERV operation descriptions
that follow assume that:
The RRS Economizer Controller is configured for proper
interaction with the Simplicity Lite board compressor
control functions
The controller boot-up sequence is completed
The [Cmp Min Off Time] timer has expired (approxi-
mately 1 minute, 16 seconds after power is applied to the
RRS Economizer Controller)
There is more than 19.2 volts AC to the C and R pins
The shutdown function is not active
MINIMUM POSITION FUNCTIONS
To be effective, all minimum position functions require 24
volts AC input to the controller OCC pin ([Occupancy] indi-
cates “Occupied”). The minimum position functions then
determine the lowest value for the [Damper Command].
When 24 volts AC input to the controller OCC pin is removed
([Occupancy] indicates “Unoccupied”) the [Damper Com-
mand] is either “.0 %” or positioned for free cooling functions.
LOW AMBIENT MINIMUM POSITION
When active, the low ambient minimum position function has
the highest priority and overrides all other economizer mini-
mum position functions.
The low ambient minimum position function is enabled when
[Damper Lo Amb En] is set to “Yes”.
The [Lo Amb Min Pos] typically is set to provide less outside
air than [Damper Min Pos].
When enabled, the low ambient minimum position function is
active when [Outdoor Temp] falls below the [Low Ambient
Stpt] and [Occupancy] indicates “Occupied”. Then, the value
set for [Lo Amb Min Pos] determines the lowest value for the
[Damper Command].
The low ambient minimum position function is inactive when
[Outdoor Temp] rises to or above the [Low Ambient Stpt].
Then, the active minimum position function requiring the
greatest of outside air determines the lowest value for the
[Damper Command].
MINIMUM POSITION
The minimum position function is active when low ambient
minimum position is inactive and [Occupancy] indicates
“Occupied”. Then, the value set for [Damper Min Pos] deter-
mines the lowest value for the [Damper Command].
There is not a menu selection to directly disable the minimum
position function. However, the minimum position function is

effectively disabled if the [Damper Min Pos] is set to the mini-
mum setting of “.0 %”.
FREE COOLING FUNCTIONS
Free cooling functions are disabled, but minimum position
functions remain enabled, when [Econ Enabled] is set to
“No”.
The following are required for free cooling functions to be
effective:
[Econ Enabled] must be set to “Yes”
[Outdoor Temp] cannot indicate “Out of range high”
[Supply Temp] cannot indicate “Out of range high”
There is 24 volts AC input to the RRS Economizer Con-
troller Y1 pin ([Y1-Tstat] indicates “On”)
Then, the free cooling function is active when the outdoor air
is suitable to use for cooling as determined by the free cool-
ing changeover method in use.
FREE COOLING CHANGEOVER
Free cooling changeover determines if the outdoor air is suit-
able to use for cooling. The method of free cooling change-
over depends on the sensor inputs available and/or on the
selection for the [Free Clg Select] parameter. The free cool-
ing changeover method may be from outside air dry bulb tem-
perature, outside air (single) enthalpy, or a comparison of
return and outside air (dual) enthalpy. A “Yes” value for [Free
Clg Avail] indicates the outdoor air is suitable to use for cool-
ing for the free cooling changeover method in current use.
The [Altitude] configuration item must be set for the nearest
100 feet of job site elevation for best control accuracy when
enthalpy changeover methods are used.
The outdoor air temperature and humidity sensor included
with the economizer accessory provides input to the control-
ler OAT ([Outdoor Temp]) and OAH ([Outdoor Humidity]) pins
for dry bulb and single enthalpy free cooling changeover
capabilities. The optional return air temperature and humidity
sensor provides input to the controller RAT ([Return Temp])
and RAH ([Return Humidity]) pins for the addition of dual
enthalpy free cooling changeover capabilities. Once sensor
presence has been detected and remains in range – the sen-
sor parameter does not indicate “Out of range low” or “Out of
range high” – the sensor input is available for use in free cool-
ing changeover.
The selection for the [Free Clg Select] parameter determines
the desired free cooling changeover method and limits for
advancement the free cooling changeover method:
With [Free Clg Select] set to “Auto” – the free cooling
changeover method is determined by the temperature
and humidity inputs
• The free cooling changeover method is dual
enthalpy if [Outdoor Temp], [Outdoor Humidity],
[Return Temp] and [Return Humidity] inputs are
available
• The free cooling changeover method will revert to
single enthalpy if either [Return Temp] or [Return
Humidity] input is not available
• The free cooling changeover method will revert to
dry bulb if [Outdoor Humidity] input is not available
• The free cooling changeover method is single
enthalpy if only [Outdoor Temp] and [Outdoor
Humidity] inputs are available
• The free cooling changeover method will advance
to dual enthalpy if both [Return Temp] and [Return
Humidity] inputs are available
• The free cooling changeover method will revert to
dry bulb if [Outdoor Humidity] input
is not available
• The free cooling changeover method is dry bulb if
only [Outdoor Temp] input is available
• The free cooling changeover method will advance
to single enthalpy if [Outdoor Humidity] input is
available
• The free cooling changeover method will advance
to dual enthalpy if [Outdoor Humidity], [Return
Temp] and [Return Humidity] inputs are available
With [Free Clg Select] set to “Dual Enthalpy” – the free
cooling changeover method remains determined by the
temperature and humidity inputs
• The free cooling changeover method is dual
enthalpy if [Outdoor Temp], [Outdoor Humidity],
[Return Temp] and [Return Humidity] inputs are
available
• The free cooling changeover method will revert to
single enthalpy if either [Return Temp] or [Return
Humidity] input is not available
• The free cooling changeover method will revert to
dry bulb if [Outdoor Humidity] input is not available
• The free cooling changeover method is single
enthalpy if only [Outdoor Temp] and [Outdoor
Humidity] inputs are available
• The free cooling changeover method will advance
to dual enthalpy if both [Return Temp] and [Return
Humidity] inputs are available
• The free cooling changeover method will revert to
dry bulb if [Outdoor Humidity] input is not available
• The free cooling changeover method is dry bulb if
only [Outdoor Temp] input is available
• The free cooling changeover method will advance
to single enthalpy if [Outdoor Humidity] input is
available
• The free cooling changeover method will advance
to dual enthalpy if [Outdoor Humidity], [Return
Temp] and [Return Humidity] inputs are available
With [Free Clg Select] set to “Single Enthalpy” – the free
cooling changeover method will not advance to dual
5292230-USG-B-0718
16 RRS Economizer Controller Quick Start Guide
enthalpy if [Return Temp] and [Return Humidity] inputs
are available; the free cooling changeover method is
determined by the availability of [Outdoor Humidity] input
• The free cooling changeover method is single
enthalpy if [Outdoor Temp] and [Outdoor Humid-
ity] inputs are available
• The free cooling changeover method will revert to
dry bulb if [Outdoor Humidity] input is not available
• The free cooling changeover method is dry bulb if
only [Outdoor Temp] input is available
• The free cooling changeover method will advance
to single enthalpy if [Outdoor Humidity] input is
available
With [Free Clg Select] set to “Dry Bulb Temperature” –
the free cooling changeover method will not advance to
single enthalpy or dual enthalpy if [Outdoor Humidity],
[Return Temp] and [Return Humidity] inputs are avail-
able; the free cooling changeover method is dry bulb
For all [Free Clg Select] settings, free cooling operation is not
permitted if [Outdoor Temp] input is not available.
Dry bulb free cooling changeover is based on the [Outdoor
Temp]. Dry bulb is the “standard option” free cooling change-
over method for the RRS Economizer Controller since the
included OAT/OAH sensor is the source for [Outdoor Temp]
but requires the [Free Clg Select] setting to be changed from
the default “Auto” to “Dry Bulb Temperature”. Dry bulb is also
the “fallback” free cooling changeover method since enthalpy
free cooling changeover methods can revert to dry bulb if
humidity inputs are not available. As a “best practice”, it is
recommended that the [Dry Bulb Stpt] be reviewed and have
a reasonable “fallback” setting for the application regardless
of the desired free cooling changeover method. When “Dry
Bulb Temperature” is the active free cooling changeover
method:
[Free Clg Avail] will indicate “Yes” when both
• [Outdoor Temp] is at or below the [High OA Shut-
off] setting
• [Outdoor Air Enthalpy] falls 1 “B/#” or more below
the [OA Enth Setpt] setting
[Free Clg Avail] will indicate “No” when either
• [Outdoor Temp] rises above the [High OA Shutoff]
setting
• [Outdoor Air Enthalpy] rises above the [OA Enth
Setpt] setting
Dual enthalpy free cooling changeover requires addition of
the optional return air temperature and humidity sensor. Dual
enthalpy free cooling changeover is based on a comparison
of the [Outdoor Air Enthalpy] to the [Return Air Enthalpy].
[Outdoor Air Enthalpy] is calculated from the [Outdoor Temp]
and the [Outdoor Humidity] inputs. [Return Air Enthalpy] is
calculated from the [Return Temp] and the [Return Humidity]
inputs. When “Single Enthalpy” is the active free cooling
changeover method:
[Free Clg Avail] will indicate “Yes” when both
• [Outdoor Temp] is at or below the [High OA Shut-
off] setting
• [Outdoor Air Enthalpy] falls 1 “B/#” or more below
the [Return Air Enthalpy]
[Free Clg Avail] will indicate “No” when either
• [Outdoor Temp] rises above the [High OA Shutoff]
setting
• [Outdoor Air Enthalpy] rises above the [Return Air
Enthalpy]
FREE COOLING OPERATION
Free cooling operation is initiated when both:
There is 24 volts AC input to the RRS Economizer Con-
troller Y1 pin ([Y1-Tstat] indicates “On”)
• 24 volts AC originating from thermostat input to
the Simplicity Lite Y1 screw terminal, through the
Simplicity Lite Y1 output pin to the RRS Econo-
mizer Controller Y1 pin input
[Free Clg Avail] indicates “Yes”
NOTE: Compressor operation by Simplicity Lite to supple-
ment free cooling operation by the RRS Economizer
Controller is available when a 2-stage cooling ther-
mostat is used to provide input to the Simplicity Lite
Y2 terminal. Other than the influence on the RRS
Economizer Controller supply air temperature input,
Simplicity Lite compressor operation from Y2 input
is independent of free cooling operation.
During free cooling operation:
The RRS Economizer Controller Y1O pin output is de-
energized ([Compressor 1] indicates “Off”)
• Simplicity Lite will display flash code 11 and com-
pressor operation from Y1 thermostat/ECON input
ends.
The [Damper Command] is increased if [Supply Temp] is
more than 0.5°F above the [Supply Temp Stpt]
• Free cooling operation can increase the [Damper
Command] up to “100.0 %”
The [Damper Command] remains at the current position
if [Supply Temp] is within 0.5°F above or below the [Sup-
ply Temp Stpt]
The [Damper Command] is decreased if [Supply Temp]
is more than 0.5°F below the [Supply Temp Stpt]
• If [Occupancy] indicates “Occupied”, free cooling
operation can decrease the [Damper Command]
to the active minimum position value
5292230-USG-B-0718
RRS Economizer Controller Quick Start Guide 17
• If [Occupancy] indicates “Unoccupied”, free cool-
ing operation can decrease the [Damper Com-
mand] to “0.0 %”
Free cooling operation ends when either:
24 volts AC input to the RRS Economizer Controller Y1
pin is removed ([Y1-Tstat] indicates “Off”)
[Free Clg Avail] indicates “No”
When free cooling operation ends:
The RRS Economizer Controller Y1O pin output is ener-
gized ([Compressor 1] indicates “On”) and Simplicity Lite
operation of the compressor from Y1 thermostat/ECON
input can resume if both
• 24 volts AC input to the RRS Economizer Control-
ler Y1 pin remains (free cooling operation ended
because [Free Clg Avail] indicates “No”)
• The [Cmp Min Off Time] timer expires
The [Cmp Min Off Time] timer expires
• The active minimum position value if [Occupancy]
indicates “Occupied”
“0.0 %” if [Occupancy] indicates “Unoccupied”
COMPRESSOR SWITCHING BY SAT INPUT
Compressor switching by the RRS Economizer Controller
supply air temperature input and [Excess SAT Stpt] requires
the following to be effective:
There is 24 volts AC input to the RRS Economizer Con-
troller Y1 pin ([Y1-Tstat] indicates “On”)
[Free Clg Avail] indicates “No”
[Supply Temp] cannot indicate “Out of range high”
Then, when [Supply Temp] falls to or below the [Excess SAT
Stpt]:
The RRS Economizer Controller Y1O pin output is de-
energized ([Compressor 1] indicates “Off”)
• Simplicity Lite will display flash code 11 and com-
pressor operation from Y1 thermostat/ECON input
ends
The [Cmp Min Off Time] timer begins
An “Excessive Supply Air Temp Cooling” Alarm becomes
active
Then, when [Supply Temp] rises above the [Excess SAT
Stpt] and the [Cmp Min Off Time] timer expires:
The RRS Economizer Controller Y1O pin output is ener-
gized ([Compressor 1] indicates “On”)
• Simplicity Lite compressor operation from Y1 ther-
mostat/ECON input can resume
The “Excessive Supply Air Temp Cooling” Alarm is no
longer active
NOTE: Compressor operation by Simplicity Lite from input to
the Simplicity Lite Y2 terminal is not influenced by
the RRS Economizer Controller supply air tempera-
ture input and [Excess SAT Stpt]
POWER EXHAUST/ERV FUNCTIONS
Through the ERV-EXH output pin ([Exhaust Fan]), the BASIC
model of the RRS Economizer Controller provides 24 volts
AC output for control of non-modulating power exhaust
accessories or pivoting wheel exhaust recovery ventilator
accessories.
Power exhaust/ERV functions are disabled when [Exhaust
Setup] is set to “None”. The [Exhaust Setup] setting of “Vari-
able Frequency Fan” is not valid for the BASIC model of the
RRS Economizer Controller and should not be used.
Power exhaust control switching when [Exhaust Setup] is set
to “Non Modulating Control”:
The [Exhaust Fan] is “On” if the [Damper Command]
rises above the [Damper % Fan On] setting
The [Exhaust Fan] is “Off” if the [Damper Command] falls
below the [Damper % Fan Off] setting
NOTE: Although any setting from 0% to 100% is accepted,
[Damper % Fan Off] must have a setting less than
[Damper % Fan On] and greater than [Damper Min
Pos]
Exhaust recovery ventilator control switching when [Exhaust
Setup] is set to “ERV”:
The [Exhaust Fan] is “On” if the [Damper Command]
rises above “50%”
The [Exhaust Fan] is “Off” if the [Damper Command] falls
to “45%” or less
RRS ECONOMIZER CONTROLLER ALARMS
[Fault Detect En] must be set to “Enable” for California Title
24 Alarms to be effective. California Title 24 Alarms can only
occur if the cause of the Alarm has been sustained for a
period of 10 minutes or more.
When any Alarm is active:
The red FAULT LED will display a repetitive double-flash/
pause
The contact between ALMCOM and ALM terminals will
be closed
The five most recently occurring active Alarms are listed at
parameter menu navigation Level 0 and the Level 1 [Alarms]
section of the menu. The active Alarms are listed in order of
most recent to oldest. Alarms are removed from the listing of
active Alarms when the conditions that caused the Alarm are
no longer effective. The listing of active Alarms is not retained
when the controller is not powered.
