Graphics Virtualization Card for Dell 13G M-series blade servers

DXG

This guide tells you how to install and configure a dual slot DXG Graphics

Virtualization Card on a Dell Power Edge M630 blade server. The DXG card

incorporates an MXM GPU for GPU enabled compute solutions and VDI.

Two versions of the DXG are available:

■ single slot: Occupies a single mezzanine slot. Install in pairs or with a DXM-A

offload card. Ideal for space constrained installations.

■ dual slot: Occupies both mezzanine slots. An M630 blade can support one of

this type of DXG card.

Kits for dual slot

Each kit includes:

■ DXG Graphics Virualization Card with Nvidia or AMD MXM GPU;

■ 13 G Mezzanine kit for the DXG card (SA-MHC4-0300). This kit includes a

mounting bracket with fitted auxiliary power cables;

■ custom air deflector (HW-M630-0001).

Prepare the Blade

1. Stop all VM activity on the blade. Shut down or migrate all virtual machines

hosted by the blade.

2. In the VMware vSphere client, locate the ESXi server in the Inventory and

put it in to Maintenance Mode.

3. Shut down the host M630 blade and remove it from the chassis.

4. Open the blade.

5. Remove any installed mezzanine cards.

Remove the custom mounting bracket

Important!Alwaysuseanti-statichandlingprocedurestohandleaDXGcard

ortoworkontheinsideofablade.Keepliquidsawayfromthearea.

If there is a NIC mezzanine card fitted, you must upgrade it with an Amulet

Hotkey customized heatsink.

1. Use a Posidriv screwdriver to remove the screws from the network daughter

card and IDSDM card. Retain the screws.

2. Remove the screws on the Dell mezzanine card mounting bracket and retain.

3. Disconnect, disengage and remove the network daughter card and IDSDM

card.

4. Disengage and remove the Dell mezzanine card mounting bracket. Retain

the screw.

Install the custom mounting bracket

Important!Topositionthebracket,carefullyalignthebracketpostwiththe

6-pinheaderonthesystemboard.Thismakessurethecableconnectorinside

thebracketpostisseatedcorrectlywiththeboard.

1. Engage the bracket with the guides.

2. Make sure the power connector inside the bracket post is seated correctly

on the 6-pin header. See Figure 1: Custom mounting bracket.

3. Install the network daughter card and IDSDM card. Replace the screws in the

ISDM and network daughter cards.

Makesurethelugsoneachcardfitintotheslotsonthecustom

mountingbracket.

4. Install the screw in the custom mounting bracket.

UsethescrewretainedfromtheDellmountingbracket.

Install the DXG card

1. Carefully install the DXG card to Fabric B.

Important:DonotpushdownontheheatsinkoftheDXGcard.

TheheatsinkoftheDXGcardextendsacrossbothfabricconnectors.

2. Push the flat connector on the auxiliary power cable into the socket on the

topside of the DXG card. See item 4 in Figure 1: Custom mounting bracket.

3. Attach the DXG card onto the mounting bracket with the blue sliding latches.

4. Remove the Dell central air deflector.

5. If not already formed, form the Amulet Hotkey air guide. See Figure 2: Form

the Amulet Hotkey air guide or the Air Guide QSG on our website.

6. Fit the air guide: hook the small end tabs under the heat sink and the side

tabs under the folds in the chassis. The long pieces fit in the space between

the DIMM banks. See Figure 3: Install the Amulet Hotkey air guide.

7. Close the blade. Push the blade into the chassis and power up.
