WHAT IS A VDR?
VDR stands for “vehicle data recorder. This device automatically
records all the data being transmitted by the computers inside
your vehicle.
WHY DOESN’T MY VDR HAVE ALL THE ACCESSORIES THAT
ARE SHOWN IN THE INSTALLATION DIAGRAM?
Different Aptiv customers choose different configuration options
for their VDRs. For example, some choose only Wi-Fi. Some choose
only cell connections. Some want to be able to use both. Some want
to enable GPS tracking, and some don’t. The antennas and other
accessories you received were based on your company’s preferences.
WHY DOES THE BACK OF MY VDR LOOK DIFFERENT THAN THE
ONE IN THE INSTALLATION DIAGRAM?
The VDR in the diagram is our most popular model, but the CT-1000
comes in several different versions with different internal
components that vary in size and shape. In order to fit these
components inside the device housing, we sometimes need to put
the ports on the back of the device in a different order. When you
are installing your device, the important thing is to match the
accessories to the labels on the ports.
THERE ARE TWO CELL PORTS ON THE VDR IN THE
INSTALLATION DIAGRAM. WHY DOES MY VDR ONLY HAVE
ONE?
Some Aptiv customers may only need one cell antenna to connect
to the network chosen based on needs and geographical location. If
you only need one cell antenna, we may ship you one of the CT-1000
models with only one cell port.
WHY DO MY CELL ANTENNAS LOOK DIFFERENT THAN THE
ONES IN THE DIAGRAM?
The type of cell antenna you receive depends on where you live and
who your cell service provider is. We will ship you the right type of
antenna for your carrier.
DOES IT MATTER WHICH WAY MY CELL ANTENNAS POINT?
Yes. If you received two cell antennas, you should position the cell
antenna plugged into CELL-1 vertically (that is, point it up toward
the sky or down toward the ground), and you should position the
cell antenna plugged into CELL-2 horizontally (that is, parallel to the
ground). If the VDR is not lying flat (because it is mounted to the
drivers seat, for example), you should still position the antennas
relative to the sky and the ground, not relative to the VDR.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CT-1000 INSTALLATION
WHAT DO THE LIGHTS ON THE FRONT OF THE DEVICE MEAN?
SOME OF THE LIGHTS ON MY VDR AREN’T GREEN. WHAT
SHOULD I DO?
First wait a few minutes. It takes some time for the VDR to start
running after installation. If the lights still aren’t working, here’s what
you should do next:
DOES THE VDR HAVE TO GO ON THE FLOOR BEHIND THE
DRIVER’S SEAT?
The VDR needs to be in a flat, dry location where it won’t get in the
way or fall during normal driving. The floor behind the driver’s seat
is our recommended location, but some customers choose to put it
someplace else, such as under the drivers seat. Some customers
also choose to mount the VDR to the vehicle.
DOES IT MATTER WHERE I PUT THE GPS ANTENNA?
The GPS antenna needs to be on a flat surface with a view of the sky.
The dashboard is usually the best location in most vehicles, but the
rear window may also work.
DOES IT MATTER WHERE I PUT THE MANUAL TRIGGER?
The manual trigger needs to be positioned so that the driver can
reach it easily if something unusual happens while driving, but the
exact location will differ depending on the model of your vehicle.
Many Aptiv customers choose to put the trigger somewhere on the
center console, such as on the armrest or in a cup holder.
WHERE ON THE VEHICLE SHOULD I PLUG IN THE VDR?
The most common place to plug in the VDR is the OBD port, which
is most commonly under the dashboard on the driver side. However,
the exact location depends on your vehicle model and what type of
data your company wants to collect. If you aren’t sure where to plug
it in, talk to the person at your company who is charge of your VDR
program.
A Device power Should flash green
B VDR software status Should be steady green
C Connection to server
via Wi-Fi or cell service
Should be steady green
D Disk status Should be off or flashing green
E GPS signal Should be steady green
A Make sure the vehicle is running and double-check all the
connections.
B If C is green and B is not, call your Aptiv representative. If
both B and C are unlit, follow the directions for C below.
C Move the vehicle to an area with better cell and/or Wi-Fi
availability. If the VDR goes through an area with limited
connectivity, it will save the relevant data and transmit
it when a network connection becomes available. If that
doesn’t help, double-check the positioning of your antennas.
D If the light is solid red, solid amber, or flashing amber,
call your Aptiv representative. If it is amber for only a few
seconds, off, or flashing green, no action is necessary.
E Make sure the GPS antenna has a view of the sky. If that
doesn’t help, move the vehicle to an area with a stronger
GPS signal. The VDR can only log GPS data when it has
access to a GPS satellite.
