SUMMARY:
Environmental corrosion problems on equipment sold to costal and off shore facilities have
been a concern for many years. Special equipment designs and manufacturing procedures
have been used to minimize the corrosion problem but complete elimination of corrosion is
difficult to attain.
A recent corrosion event occurred on the Gulf Coast causing a MultiPower 460 to lose voltage
control. Field troubleshooting could not easily identify the problem requiring the unit to be
returned to Florence for evaluation. Further investigation showed that a connector pin on the
current sensing transducer had corroded completely away. This was not obvious during
troubleshooting because the missing pin on the transducer was easily overlooked upon visual
inspection. See photos.
OPERATIONAL IMPACT:
None
ACTION:
The corrective action to minimize future corrosion occurrences is the same procedure used at
the factory whereby Dielectric Grease (77500105) is applied to the connector plug. It is
important that the connection (plug to pin) be made BEFORE
the grease is applied to insure a
good electrical connection between the pin and plug sockets. After making the connection,
apply a liberal coating of Dielectric grease to the back of the plug and around the interface of
the plug casing to transducer body so that all entrances to the pin and socket area have been
covered.
