WARNING! Risk of electric shock
Incorrect installation could be dangerous or illegal. You might need to turn off multiple breakers/fuses for safe
installation. Please call a professional electrician if you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with electrical work
1. Turn off the power
1. Shut off power to the switch you’re replacing at your fuse panel or circuit breaker
Confirm that power is off
1. Remove the cover plate from the existing switch.
2. Use a voltage tester to test BOTH sides of the switch. You may need to turn off more than one
circuit breaker/fuse
2. Pull out existing switch
1. Unscrew the switch and gently pull it out of the wall.
2. Do not remove any of the wires yet
Pro Tip:
Take a picture of the wires in your wall to refer back to later
3. Look for NEUTRAL wires
NEUTRAL wires are usually white. If you have them, we will direct you to connect them later in step 7. If you
don’t have them, your house is not compatible with Wemo Smart Light Switch.
Note:
You may have a different number of neutral wires than shown.
Test the NEUTRAL wires
Use a voltage tester to check that there is no power in the NEUTRAL wires from neighboring circuits. If
necessary, shut off additional circuits until no voltage is found
4. Identify your existing switch
Single pole
If one switch controls one light, it is a single-pole switch
3-way
If two switches control the same light, they are both 3-way switches
4-way
If three switches control the same light, the one with 5 screws is a 4-way switch. The other two are 3-way
switches.
Follow 3-way installation instructions
Wemo Smart Light Switch cannot replace a 4-way switch
5. Remove existing switch
Disconnect the LINE and LOAD wires (usually black) from the existing light switch.
Note: Your existing switch, wires, and electrical box may look different and have different colors
Disconnect the GROUND wire from the switch (usually bare copper or green). Remove wire nuts from the
white NEUTRAL wires
6. Prepare Wemo Smart Light Switch and wires
Grab the cover plate from the top and pull down to snap it off of the Wemo Smart Light Switch
Loosen the black and red screws on the Wemo Smart Light Switch with a screwdriver.
Options for connecting wires
1. Insert into holes
1. Insert the wire end into either of the holes near the screw.
2. Use a screwdriver to tightly screw the terminal screws back in. These will clamp down on the wire.
2. Hook around screw
1. Use pliers to bend the end of the wire clockwise. Hook it around the screw
2. Use a screwdriver to tightly screw the terminal screws back in
For the upcoming steps, choose your preferred option for connecting wires:
Note:
If needed, use pliers to strip the wire end to this length:
7. Connect LINE, LOAD, GROUND, and NEUTRAL wires
1. Connect the LINE and LOAD wires from the wall (usually black) to the black and red screws on the light
switch using your preferred method ( shown here).
Tighten each screw after inserting wire
Note:
Either wire can be connected to either screw.
Connect the GROUND wires (usually bare copper or green) from the wall to the green screw on the
switch
Connect the provided jumper wire from the silver screw on the light switch to the NEUTRAL wires in the
wall with a wire nut
8. Install Wemo Smart Light Switch into the wall
Almost done! Tug each wire to ensure they are securely connected
Carefully tuck the wires behind the switch and into the box. Screw the light switch into the wall. Be careful not
to over-tighten the screws
Pro Tip
Make sure to insulate any exposed wiring with electrical tape
Before snapping on the cover plate, you’ll notice an 8-digit setup code on the switch. You may need this during
app setup. You can also find it in step 10 of this guide
Finally, snap the cover plate onto the switch
9. Turn on the power
Turn on power to your switch at your fuse panel or circuit breaker panel you turned off earlier.
Press the switch to put it in setup mode
1. The light will blink blue when it is ready
10. Add to the Apple Home app
Unlock your phone.
1. Hold the upper back of your phone at the center of the switch

Thread for quicker and more reliable control
Thread is a new wireless technology built into Wemo. It connects smart home devices more quickly and
reliably than Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
To take advantage of it, you’ll need an Apple HomePod mini or the latest Apple TV 4K. If you don’t have one of
those, your Wemo will connect using Bluetooth. Learn more at wemo.com/thread
