Firmware Update for Release 4.6
Firmware Update Sheet
Document No. 3810-A2-GB41-41
November 1996
This document contains information on changes in firmware
Release 4.6 that are not documented in the COMSPHERE 3800 Series
Modems Models 3810, 3811, and 3820 Users Guide (3810-A2-GB91-30)
and the COMSPHERE 3800 Series Modems Model 3830 Users Guide
(3830-A2-GB91-20), and additional information about earlier releases.
The information in this update sheet will be incorporated into future
releases of the Users Guides. In the meantime, keep this document with
your Users Guide.
New Configuration Options and Errata
Table 1 shows the previously undocumented new or enhanced features and
configuration options available. In the left column is the title of the change
or addition, with references to related page numbers, if any, in the
COMSPHERE 3800 Series Modems Models 3810, 3811, and 3820 Users
Guide (shown as 3810) and the COMSPHERE 3800 Series Modems
Model 3830 Users Guide (shown as 3830). In the right column is
information about the change. Information may include the front panel
configuration options group for modems with a shared or integral
Diagnostic Control Panel (DCP), and AT command equivalents for all
3800 Series modems. Where possible, table entries are in order by AT
command name.

CCITT/Bell Mode
Determines the protocol used if the dial-line rate is set to
300 or 1200 bps. It has no effect if the rate is set to
another value. (See %B.)
B, B0 V.21 or V.22 (300 or 1200 bps)
B1 Bell 103 or Bell 212A (300 or 1200 bps)
The factory default is B1.

Error Control Mode
3830: p. 4-26
The Error Control Mode option of the V.42/MNP/Buffer
configuration options group determines the type of error
control used by the modem. This configuration option is
only available if Async/Sync Mode is configured for
Async. The new selections LAPM_or_Disc and
LAPM_or_Buffr are not in the 3830 manual.
LAPM or Disconnect (\N6) – Modem attempts to connect
in V.42 Link Access Procedure for Modems
(LAPM) error control mode. If this fails, the
modem disconnects. This setting should be used
for cellular connections (at both the mobile and
PSTN sides) when it is known that both sides
support V.42.
LAPM or Buffer (\N7) – Modem attempts to connect in
V.42 LAPM error control mode. If this fails, the
modem connects in Buffer mode and continues
operation.
The default settings have not changed. For Async Dial
and UNIX Dial, V42/MNPorBfr is the factory default; for
Sync Dial and Sync Leased, DirectMode is the factory
default; for Cellular, V.42/MNP or Disconnect is the
default.
The AT command equivalent is \N:
\N0 Buffer Mode.
\N1 Direct Mode.
\N2 MNP or Disconnect.
\N3 MNP or Buffer.
\N4 V.42/MNP or Disconnect.
\N5 V.42/MNP or Buffer.
\N6 LAPM or Disconnect.
\N7 LAPM or Buffer.
The factory default is \N5.

DTR Auto Redial
3810: 8-36, 8-48,
13-31
3830: 4-32
The DTR Auto Redial option of the Line Dialer
configuration options group no longer represents the
same internal setting as that accessed with the Auto
Redial configuration option in the Leased_Line group.
Auto Redial of the Leased Line group is moved to the new
S-Register S35.
Both types of Auto Redial settings define the number of
directory locations the modem may access when prior
dialing attempts fail. For example, the front panel
selection Dirs 1–10 means that all ten directory locations
may be tried. The default is directory location 1 only.
The AT command equivalent for (Leased Line) Auto
Redial is S35=
n:
S35=0 Use directory location 1 (default)
S35=1 Use directory locations 1–2
S35=2 Use directory locations 1–3
S35=3 Use directory locations 1–4

 
S35=9 Use directory locations 1–10
The AT command equivalent for DTR Auto Redial is
S37=
n:
S37=0 Use directory location 1 (default)
S37=1 Use directory locations 1–2
S37=2 Use directory locations 1–3
S37=3 Use directory locations 1–4

Fax Feature
3810: 12-2
3830: 3-2
The COMSPHERE 3800 fax firmware does not currently
support Auto Detect.
Quick Link II Fax has a default Answer Mode of Fax
and Data, which will not work with the 3800 Release 4.6
firmware.
To circumvent the problem:
From the Quick Link II Fax Modem Setup dialog box,
select an Answer Mode of Fax Only.
