About the power supply
Overview
The HPE 5960 400G 1600W AC Power Supply (R9Y18A) is a
high-voltage DC (for China only) or AC input power supply. It
provides a maximum output of 1600 W.
The power supply has the following features:
ProtectionThe power supply provides protection against input
overcurrent, input undervoltage, output overcurrent, output
overvoltage, output short circuit, and overtemperature conditions.
RedundancyTwo or more of the power supplies can be
connected in parallel to achieve N+1 or N+N redundancy and load
sharing.
Hot swappingThe power supply can be installed on or
removed from an operating device. You can remove a power
supply only when the remaining power supplies can provide
sufficient power for the device.

Power cords
The power supply supports two types of AC power cords: one type
for connecting to a PDU and the other type for connecting to an AC
outlet.
Installing and removing the power
supply
Safety precautions
To avoid bodily injury or power supply or device damage, follow these
safety precautions:
4
When installing and removing the power supply, wear an ESD
wrist strap. Make sure the strap makes good skin contact and is
reliably grounded.
To avoid power supply or device damage, make sure the
external power source provides a voltage as required by the
power supply and the power supply output voltage is as required
by the device.
To avoid bodily injury, do not touch any bare cables or terminals
of the power supply.
Do not place the power supply in a wet area, and prevent liquid
from flowing into the power supply.
To avoid power supply damage, do not open the power supply.
When an internal circuit or component is faulty, contact HPE
Support.
Installation tools
You must wear an ESD wrist strap when installing or removing the
power supply. Prepare one yourself.
Installing the power supply
To avoid bodily injury or device damage, strictly follow the procedure
in Figure 2 to install the power supply.
5
Figure 2 Power supply installation procedure
To install the power supply:
1. Wear an ESD wrist strap, and make sure the strap makes good
skin contact and is reliably grounded.
2. Unpack the power supply. Make sure the power supply model is
as required.
3. As shown in Figure 3, correctly orient the power supply. Holding
the power supply handle with one hand and supporting its
bottom with the other, align it with the power supply slot. Push
the power supply slowly into the slot along the guide rails until
the latch clicks and locks in place.
Make sure the power supply makes good contact with the
backplane connector of the device.
If you encounter a hard resistance while inserting the power
supply, pull out the power supply, orient it correctly, and then
insert it again.

IMPORTANT:
Keep the filler panel for
the power supply slot and the power
supply packaging materials secure for future use.
Connecting the power cord
WARNING!
Make sure each power cord has a separate circuit breaker.
Before connecting the power cord, make sure the circuit
breaker for it is turned off.
To connect the power cord:
1. As shown in Figure 4, connect the female connector (IEC
60320-C15) of the power cord into the power input receptacle
on the power supply.
7
Figure 4 Connecting the power cord
2. As shown in Figure 5, use a cable tie to secure the power cord to
the handle of the power supply.
Figure 5 Securing the power cord
3. Connect the other end of the power cord to an external AC or
HVDC power source and turn on the circuit breaker.
4. Examine the power input status LED (IN) on the power supply.
If the LED is steady green, the power cord is connected
correctly. If the LED is off, check the installation and fix the
issues.

Removing the power supply
To avoid bodily injury or device damage, strictly follow the procedure
in Figure 6 to remove the power supply.
Figure 6 Power supply removal procedure
To remove the power supply:
1. Turn off the circuit breaker.
2. Wear an ESD wrist strap, and make sure the strap makes good
skin contact and is reliably grounded.
3. Loosen and remove the cable tie, and then remove the power
cord.
4. As shown in Figure 7, use one hand to hold the power supply
handle, press the latch towards the handle, and then pull the
power supply part way out of the slot. Supporting the power
supply with the other hand, pull it completely out of the slot.
9
Figure 7 Removing the power supply
5. Place the removed power supply on an anti-static mat or put it
into its original package.
6. If you are not to install a new power supply, install a filler panel in
the slot to prevent dust and ensure good ventilation in the
device.
