Connecting the Hardware Cables
Required Parts
To connect the Waters 2795 Separations Module to a Thermo Scientific mass spectrometer,
order the Waters Interface Kit from Thermo Fisher Scientific. This kit contains the cables
listed in Table 1. The serial communication cable connects the Waters 2795 Separations
Module to the data system computer. The contact closure (trigger) cable connects the Inject
Out pins of the separations module to the START IN pins on the input/output (I/O) panel of
the mass spectrometer.

Setting the Operating Mode to Remote Control
For the Waters 2795 Separations Module, firmware version 2.04 is compatible with the
Xcalibur-based instrument control application. To control the Waters 2795 Separations
Module, set the separations module to operate by remote control through an RS232
connection to the data system computer as described in the following procedure.
To check the firmware version of the Waters 2795 Separations Module and set the
operating mode to remote control
1. Turn on the Waters instrument and watch the front panel LCD display as the instrument
cycles through the system startup.
At the end of the system initialization process, the Main LCD display appears (Figure 3).
The firmware version appears in the lower-right corner of the display.

Adding the Waters 2795 Separations Module to the
Software Configuration
This chapter describes how to add the Waters 2795 Separations Module to the Xcalibur
instrument configuration, including how to specify the port on the data system computer
where you connected the serial communication cable and the sample plates you are using.
To add the Waters 2795 Separations Module to the Xcalibur instrument configuration
1. From the Microsoft Windows XP taskbar, choose Start > Programs >
Thermo Foundation 1.0 > Instrument Configuration to open the Instrument
Configuration window (Figure 7).
Figure 7. Xcalibur Instrument Configuration window
3 Adding the Waters 2795 Separations Module to the Software Configuration

2. Under Available Devices, double-click the Waters 2795 icon to add it to the Configured
Devices list.
3. Under Configured Devices, double-click the Waters 2795 icon to open the
Configuration dialog box (Figure 8).
Figure 8. Alliance 2795 Configuration dialog box
4. Under RS-232 Configuration, in the Port list, confirm that the selected COM port is the
RS232 port on the data system computer where you physically connected the separations
module.
For information about connecting the serial communication cable, see “Connecting the
Serial Communication Cableon page 4.
IMPORTANT When the correct COM port is not selected in the Port list, the
Xcalibur data system does not communicate with the Waters 2795 Separations
Module.
3 Adding the Waters 2795 Separations Module to the Software Configuration
Thermo Scientific Waters 2795 Separations Module Getting Connected Guide 11
5. In the Carrier Plate lists, specify the Plate Type that you are using and the Sequential
Reference counting order for each plate.
6. Click Autoconfigure, and then click OK to save the settings and close the dialog box.
The Waters 2795 Separations Module is ready for remote control from the Xcalibur data
system.
IMPORTANT The Waters 2795 Separations Module does not automatically
recognize the tray type loaded in the sample compartment. You must specify the tray
type to ensure that the autosampler draws sample from the correct location.
