This guide shows you how to use the rack mounting kit to install the UNS in a rack. Graphics in this
book may differ slightly from your product. Every effort has been made to ensure that the
information in this manual is accurate.

1.2.1 Prepare the Installation Requirements
• A rack with 2U space.
• Two sliding rails.
• 10 M6 screws for attaching both outer rails to the rack.
• The rack depth can be from 71.12 cm to 91.44 cm (28 to 36 inches).
Note: Failure to use the proper screws may damage the unit.
1.2.1.1 Precautions
• Make sure the rack will safely support the combined weight of all the equipment it contains. The
weight of the UNS with 12 hard drives installed is about 22.8 KG. The maximum load the rails can
hold is 33.56 Kg.

• Make sure the position of the UNS does not make the rack unstable or top-heavy. Take all
necessary precautions to anchor the rack securely before installing the unit.
1.2.2 Separate the Slide Rails
A slide rail consists of an inner rail and an outer rail. Release the lock (1) and slide out out the inner
rail completely to separate the rails.
1.2.3 Connect the Inner Rail to the UNS
1 Connect the inner rail to the UNS by latching it onto the screws on the UNS body.
2 Repeat this procedure for the other inner rail on the other side of the UNS.
1.2.4 Connect the Outer Rail to the Rack
Find a space in the rack that is 2U high. The space between two triangles is 1U high.
1 Adjust the length of the outer slide rail to the depth of the rack. The front of the outer rail can slide
out. This is the side that should be at the front of the rack.

2 Screw the outer rail onto the side of the rack using the M6 screws and nuts. Repeat for the other
side of the rack.
1.2.5 Insert the UNS into the Rack
It is recommended that two people insert the UNS (with inner railings attached) into the rack.
The inner rail (attached to the UNS) has two locks. Use the inner lock to slide the inner rail into the
outer rail (already attached to the rack).
1 Release the inner lock and slide the UNS with inner rail attached onto the outer rail already fastened
to the rack.
2 Push the inner rail all the way into the outer rail.

3 Use the screws to fasten the inner rail to the rack.
Note: To remove the UNS from the rack, use the outer lock on the inner rail.
1.3 Insert a Hard Drive

Push the latch on the right (1) to release the front handle of the hard drive tray (2). Gently slide out
the hard drive tray (3).
This is the empty hard drive tray.
Place a compatible hard drive into the hard drive tray as shown.
Turn the tray over while holding the hard drive inside and fasten the hard drive to the tray with the
provided screws. The screw positions for 3.5 inch hard drives and 2.5 inch hard drives are shown in
the figure.

Note: Make sure the screws are fastened tightly as protruding screws will impede
insertion of the hard drive tray into the UNS.
Put the hard drive tray back into the UNS by sliding it gently all the way in, and then closing the
front.
Note: Do NOT close the front handle before you slide the hard drive tray all the way back
in.
1.4 About the Power Modules
There are two power module slots with two power modules. One module is redundant, so if one
power module fails the system can operate on the remaining module. It is recommended that you
use two power modules.

If you want to remove a power module, use the handle (2) to slowly pull it out with one hand and
place the other hand under it to support it.
1.5 Make Rear Panel Connections
The following is the rear panel for the UNS2700.

1.6 Turn on the UNS
Push the button on the front panel to turn on the UNS.
It is recommended to use the web configurator Shutdown menu to turn off the UNS. Alternatively,
hold the button on the front panel in for several seconds to turn off the UNS.
1.7 Observe the LEDs
• Hard Disk Tray LEDs

PORT DESCRIPTION
Power Connectors Connect the female end of a power cord to the module power socket. Connect the
other end of the cord to an appropriate power outlet.
Console Port (C) This port is reserved for service technicians. Connect this port to a computer with
terminal emulation software to troubleshoot the UNS using the command line
interface (CLI).
VGA Port (V) This port is reserved for service technicians. Connect this port to a computer to
troubleshoot the UNS using the command line interface (CLI).
Port 1 Connect an Ethernet cable to this port to access UNS using the web configurator.
This port can operate at 10/100/1000 Mbps speeds and is not VLAN-aware. If
there is no DHCP server in your network, then the default IP address of this port is
169.254.1.1. You can use that IP address to access the web configurator.
1G Ports - 2 on
UNS2700 and 2-6 on
UNS2300
Connect the UNS to a 1G device in your network (computer, switch, router, and so
on) using an Ethernet cable. This port can operate at 10/100/1000 Mbps speeds
and is not VLAN-aware.
10G Ports - 3, 4 on
UNS2700
Connect the UNS to a 10G device in your network (computer, switch, router, and so
on) using an 8-wire Ethernet cable. These ports can operate at 10000 Mbps speeds
and are not VLAN-aware.
USB Use the USB ports to upload firmware from a USB memory stick, dump system
information to a USB memory stick or connect a mouse or keyboard for use when
a monitor is connected to the VGA port. You cannot connect USB hard drives to
these ports.

1.7.1 Hard Disk Tray LEDs
The LEDs are to the right of the latch.
The following table describes the LEDs on the hard disk tray.
1.7.2 Power Module LEDS and Buzzer
The LEDs are to the right of the power socket.

Off There is no hard disk in the tray or the power is off.

Off The hard disk is not being accessed or there is no hard disk in the tray.

The following table describes the LEDs and buzzer on the power module.
1.7.3 UNS Power Switch LEDs
The LEDs are above the power switch.
The following table describes the LEDs on the UNS power switch.

AC Green On The power module is receiving AC power.
Blinking This power module is not receiving AC power.
Off Both power modules are not receiving AC power.
DC Green On The power module is receiving DC power.

! Amber On There is power supply failure.
Blinking Power supply to the module is low.
Off Power supply to the module is abnormal (too much current or not
enough voltage) or the temperature is too high.
Buzzer Button
(B)
Red N/A If the alarm sounds, push the buzzer button (1) to turn the alarm off.
The buzzer LED (1) will then turn from red to green.
Buzzer LED Red On An alarm sounds if one of the power modules is connected but not
supplying power to the UNS.
Green On The power module(s) connected to the UNS are supplying power
normally or the buzzer button (1) has been used to turn the alarm off
(if one of the connected power modules is not supplying power to the
UNS.
Off The power module(s) connected are not receiving power.

1.7.4 UNS Port LEDs
On the UNS2700, ports 1 and 2 are 1 Gbps ports; ports 3 and 4 are 10 Gbps ports.
On the UNS2300, ports 1-6 are 1 Gbps ports.
The following table describes the Ethernet port LEDs.
2 - System Red On There is a warning level event. Warning level events include:
•System Overheated,
• Voltage abnormal,
• Fan abnormal,
• UPS power low,
• Power abnormal,
• Pool failed,
•Disk I/O failed,
• Data error
• Firmware upgrade failed
Off There is no warning level event or the power is off.

1.8 Accessing the UNS
1.8.1 Find the UNS with UNS Finder
The default IP setting for the UNS is to receive an IP address from a DHCP server. After you deploy
the UNS in your network, connect port 1 to a device in your network and use UNS Finder (a Java-
based tool) to find UNS devices within the same network.
Double-click the UNS Finder jar file to open it.
In some operating systems, you may need to unblock firewall access to the program.

The main screen appears.
This table describes the fields in the UNS Finder.
Double-click an entry in the UNS Finder to open the web configrator.
1.8.2 Find the UNS With a Direct Connection
If there is no DHCP server in your network, port 1 has a fixed IP address of 169.254.1.1. You can
use that IP address to access the web configurator from a computer directly connected to port 1.
The IP address of the network port of your notebook or computer must be in the range 169.254.1.2
to 169.254.1.254.

Rescan Click this to have the UNS Finder search again for UNS devices in your network.
About Click this to get more information on this UNS Finder release.
Exit Click this to close the UNS Finder program.
IP Address This is the IP address of the UNS port connected to your network.
System Name This is the System Name of the UNS. You can change this in the web configurator.
Model Name There are different UNS models. This is the Model Name that identifies this UNS.
Software ver. This is the firmware version of this UNS model.
MAC address This is the MAC address of the UNS port connected to your network.

1.9 Configure the UNS Using the Web Configurator
The web configurator is a HTML-based program you use to configure the UNS with your web
browser.
The default login name and password is ‘admin’ and ‘1234’.
Use the menus on the left to configure the UNS. See the User’s Guide or the web help to find more
information on these screens.
1.9.1 Choose a RAID Configuration
It is important that you choose your RAID carefully. Changing RAID later requires that you back up
all the data first and then restore it after your new RAID has been configured.

Refer to the table below to choose a RAID.
Use Configuration > Setup Wizard to set up your UNS for the first time with a single RAID.
Alternatively, use Configuration > Storage Configuration > Pool > Create to configure RAID.
See the User’s Guide or Web Help for configuration details.
