Safety Information
Introduction
We provide important safety information and warnings to assist you in
understanding and avoiding potential harm to yourself and possible damage
to equipment during the installation and use of the 3M RFID Tracking Pad
Model 770 and Model 870.
Although this manual describes potential hazards you may encounter
during installation and operation of this product, we cannot predict all of
the possible hazards and this list should not be a substitute for your
judgment and experience.
Before you install and use this equipment, please read and observe all
safety information and instructions in this manual.
If you are unsure about any part of this installation or of the potential
hazards discussed, please contact your supervisor immediately.

Intended Use Statement
The 3M RFID Tracking Pad Model 770 and Model 870 are designed and
tested for use with other equipment and software to read and/or program 3M
RFID Tags. These tags are used to identify files, folders, and other items
such as books. When used in conjunction with Tracking Pad software, the
unit can track, monitor, and assist in locating various items equipped with
RFID Tags.
The product has not been evaluated for other uses.

Safety Messages
We include safety messages and safety labels in this manual to help you
protect your safety and the safety of others. This section contains important
information to help you recognize and understand these safety messages.
Safety message format
Safety messages are designed to alert you to potential hazards that can
cause personal injury to you or others. They can also indicate the possibility
of property damage.
Each safety message box contains a safety alert symbol (

The following safety messages appear in this manual:
WARNING
To reduce the risks associated with hazardous voltage contained within the
power supply, which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury:
Do not use the power supply if the case or cord are damaged;
Do not use power supply in outdoor or wet environments;
Do not attempt to service or repair the RFID circuitry or power supply — no user
serviceable parts inside.
CAUTION
To reduce the risks associated with repeated body movement, which, if not
avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury:
Operation of the Tracking Pad may involve repeated body movements. To
minimize possibility of Repetitive Stress Injury, avoid prolonged repetitive
movements, rest when becoming fatigued, and when possible, alternate job
functions with other people. It is recommended that the user avoid awkward
reaching for items.
To reduce the risks associated with environmental contamination from circuit
boards containing lead-bearing solder within the Tracking Pad and 3M RFID
Reader, which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury:
At the end of service life, dispose of the Tracking Pad, RFID Reader, and power
supply according to federal, state, and local requirements.
IMPORTANT NOTE
To reduce the risks of damaging the RFID Reader, DO NOT over tighten the
Tracking Pad cable connection:
Tighten this connection finger tight (as tight as possible using only your fingers).
To help ensure maximum Tracking Pad performance:
Place the Tracking Pad at least 2 in. from any metal surface.

Section 1 - Overview
The Tracking Pad is used with other
equipment and software to read and/or
program RFID Tags. These tags are used
to identify files, folders, and other items
such as books.
When used in conjunction with Tracking
Pad software, the unit can track, monitor,
and assist in locating various items

Computer requirements
For most applications, the Tracking Pad is connected to a customer-
supplied computer. Refer to the software user guide that came with your
system for a listing of computer requirements, e.g., operating system, RAM,
hard disk space, processor requirements, etc.
Serial port requirements
The Tracking Pad is connected to your computer’s serial port.
If your computer does not have a serial port, a USB-to-serial adaptor
can be purchased and installed by your IT department. 3M does not
provide USB-to-serial adaptors.

Section 2 – Installing the 3M™ RFID Tracking Pad
Step 1 – Install Tracking Pad software on your computer
The Tracking Pad is controlled by the software delivered with your system.
Refer to the software user guide delivered with your system for instructions
on how to install software and configure it for the Tracking Pad.
Step 2 – Determine the optimal placement for the 3M™ RFID Tracking Pad
and the 3M™ RFID Reader
Tracking Pad placement
The Tracking Pad is typically placed on a flat, non-
metallic surface in a convenient location.
For best performance, make sure that the
Tracking Pad is at least 2 in. (5 cm) away from
any metal surface.
Some desks and tables may have metal
parts underneath the surface.
If necessary, the Tracking Pad can be as close
as 1.0 in. (2.5 cm) to a metal surface.
This will reduce the Tracking Pad’s
read range.
Place the Tracking Pad close enough to the
computer so that the user can hear the
verification sounds. The computer generates
the Tracking Pad’s audible and visual cues.
See the system documentation for site-
planning guidelines.
RFID Reader mounting
The RFID Reader can be mounted in any location
that meets the environmental requirements listed
on page 7.

Step 3 – Connect the hardware components
1 Shut down your computer.
2 Connect the serial cable from the
RFID Reader to the computer.
Each Tracking Pad includes a
standard 6.5-foot (2-meter) serial
cable.
If necessary, you can purchase
standard serial cables up to 50 ft.
USB to serial adaptor - if no serial
ports are available, a USB-to-serial
adaptor cable may be purchased and
installed by your IT department.
3 Connect the Tracking Pad cable to
the RFID Reader.
Tighten the cable connector “finger
tight” (as tight as possible using your
fingers).
The Tracking Pad has a 16 ft. (4.9 meter)
cable.
If necessary, 25-foot (7.6-meter)
extension cables are available from 3M
(with the total length not to exceed 70
ft. (21.3 meters).

numbers on page 14 to order extension
cables.
Adding extension cables to the
Tracking Pad cable will reduce the
Tracking Pad’s read range.
4 Plug the power transformer cable
into the RFID Reader and tighten the
threaded nut to secure it.
5 Connect one end of the AC power
cord to the power transformer and the
other end to an AC power receptacle.

Step 4 – Configure the Tracking Pad software
Once the Tracking Pad is connected, start your computer and use the
Tracking Pad software to select the serial port where the Tracking Pad is
connected.
Do not change any of the other settings unless told to do so.
Refer to the User Guide delivered with your system for instructions on
how to set up the software for and test the Tracking Pad.
Section 3 – Using the 3M™ RFID Tracking Pad
Once the Tracking Pad is connected, refer to the User Guide delivered with your system
for instructions on how to configure and use the Tracking Pad for your application.

Tag reading techniques
Using proper tag reading techniques helps ensure that the Tracking Pad
reads all the tags on the items.
Centering tags
When you place items on the Tracking Pad, each
item’s tag should be roughly in the center of the pad.
When applying tags to file folders, make sure
that you follow the tag-placement guidelines
that instruct you to stagger (alternate) tag
placement to help avoid direct overlapping of
tags. See the user documentation delivered
with your system.
Reading multiple items
When using the Tracking Pad to read multiple items,
you may occasionally encounter a situation where
the tags directly overlap each other, making it
difficult for the Tracking Pad to read them. To help
avoid this situation:
Fan (separate) the tagged portion of the items
and place the tagged portion of the folders in the
center of the Tracking Pad so that all the tags
are read (see Figure 2).
When reading multiple items, make sure that
all the tags are within the Tracking Pad’s read
range.
Alternatively, you can read each item separately.
Verifying tag reading
Most software packages used with the Tracking Pad
provide both audible and visual indication of the
number of tags read by the Tracking Pad.
For example, if you place three items on the
Tracking Pad, you should hear three sounds and the
interface software should indicate that three tags
were read.

your system for more information on using
audible and visual verification of tag reading.

Section 4 – Troubleshooting
The 3M™ RFID Tracking Pad does not read tags
What to check
1 Make sure that the items that you are
trying to read are equipped with 3M
RFID tags.
2 Make sure that the RFID Reader’s
Green Power Light is ON, indicating
that the reader has power.
If the power light is not ON:
Check the power connection to the
reader and the power transformer.
Make sure that the threaded portion of
the reader’s power connection is
tightened “finger tight.”
Make sure that the power outlet that
the power transformer is plugged into
is ON.
3 Make sure that the reader’s
Communications Light (red) is flashing
to indicate that it is communicating with
the Tracking Pad software.
If the communications light is not ON:
Make sure that the Tracking Pad
software (delivered with your system)
is installed and running on your
computer.
Check the Tracking Pad software to
make sure that the correct serial port is
selected.
Make sure that the serial cable that
runs from the reader to your computer
is completely plugged in and that no
pins are bent.
See the user documentation delivered
with your system for detailed
instructions on how to configure tag
reader hardware.

The read range for the 3M™ RFID Tracking Pad is reduced (less than 6 in.)
What to check
1 Check to make sure that the Tracking Pad is at least two inches (15 cm) from any
metal surfaces.
Some locations may have hidden metal surfaces and components. Try moving
the Tracking Pad to a different location to see if the read range improves.
2 Make sure that the item’s tags are placed in the center of the Tracking Pad.
3 Make sure that you are using the correct tag reading techniques.

2 on page 11.
The 3M™ RFID Tracking Pad does not always read all the tags
placed on the Tracking Pad
What to check
1 Make sure that you are not trying to read blank tags, invalid tags, or disabled tags.
2 Make sure that the tags are within the Tracking Pad’s read range.
3 Make sure that the item’s tags are placed near the center of the Tracking Pad (not
hanging off the side of the pad).
4 Make sure that you are using the correct tag reading techniques.
If multiple files are placed on the Tracking Pad, make sure that none of the tags
directly overlap each other.

Before you call 3M Service, have the following information available:
Have the Tracking Pad connected with power applied and near the
telephone.
Write down the Tracking Pad’s serial number, located on the bottom of
the Tracking Pad.
Be ready to describe the problem and any error messages in detail.

Section 5 - Care and maintenance
Cleaning the 3M™ RFID Tracking Pad
The Tracking Pad may need occasional cleaning.
Gently rub the Tracking Pad with a soft cloth dampened with a mild
cleaning solution.
DO NOT use any abrasive cleaners on the Tracking Pad.
DO NOT use any liquid cleaning solutions on the RFID Reader.
