Chapter 1: Overview
1.1 Outline
This optical power and data link evaluation kit provides an integrated optical power and data link. This reference manual
describes its components and functionality. In addition, a guideline is provided for how customer boards need to be designed.
Your use of this evaluation kit constitutes your acceptance to the terms described in this manual.
Chapter 2 gives important instructions regarding laser safety and handling. In Chapter 3, the assembly and basic operation
of the kit is described. The hardware components that are included in this kit are described in Chapter 4. For operation,
additional hardware is required that is not included in this kit. Those requirements are described in Chapter 5. The software
application Engineering tool that allows the access and some configuration of the link is described in Chapter 6. Appendix A
provides guidelines for implementation of customized customer-designed board modules (CBMs).
1.2 Optical Power and Data Link - Evaluation Kit
The optical power and data link evaluation kit consists of three modules, the Tx module (TxM), the Rx module (RxM), and
the customer board module (CBM). The TxM is connected by an Ethernet cable to a Power-over-Ethernet router, which
provides data and power.
The TxM and RxM are connected by two optical fibers that provide power and data connection. The TxM launches optical
power into an optical fiber, which is then converted back to electrical power on the RxM. A data link between TxM and RxM
allows bidirectional data transmission to transmit customer-specific data and control commands in a generic manner.
The RXM and the CBM are connected by a 40-pin flexible flat cable (FFC) which provides power and bidirectional data to
the CBM. This means that the CBM is electrically powered by the RxM while TxM and RxM are galvanically isolated.

Chapter 2: Safety Instructions, Handling, Terms, and Liability
2.1 Definition of Evaluation Kit
The purpose of this Evaluation Kit is to demonstrate and to simplify the evaluation of Broadcom's power-over-fiber
components for our customer-specific application. This Evaluation Kit has the status of Engineering Samples. Engineering
Samples have a functional but not final design, which means that the design of the Evaluation Kit itself might change over
time. Differences in the mechanical, electro-optical performance and software design might change over time.
Engineering Samples have not gone through a qualification process and are not to be used for system qualification or series
production. Broadcom cannot give you any warranty for functionality or reliability. In the case of malfunction of the Evaluation
Kit, contact your local sales agent.
When you use this Evaluation Kit you agree that it is intended for evaluation purposes only and you acknowledge the
following terms. You agree this Evaluation Kit might deviate from the data sheet due to their engineering status. Evaluation
Kits are provided "as is" without further warranties. You agree using the Evaluation Kit at own risk. Broadcom Inc. hereby
disclaims all warranties and conditions with regard to the Sample, including all implied warranties of merchantability, fitness
for a particular purpose, title and non-infringement. In particular, Broadcom Inc. will not be liable for damages and injuries
caused by:
The use of the Engineering Sample other than for Evaluation Purposes, particularly the installation or integration in
another product to be sold by Customer,
Deviation or lapse in function of the sample,
Improper use of samples,
Disregard of laser safety instructions.
A software and/or firmware is accompanied by a separate end user license agreement (EULA), and this software and/or
firmware shall be governed by the EULA.
In no event will Broadcom Inc. be liable for special, incidental, indirect or consequential damages, regardless of whether
such claims are based on contract, tort, warranty or any other legal theory, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
2.2 Laser Safety Instructions
This product contains a class 4 laser with the following parameters:

For safety reasons, appropriate laser safety measures have to be applied. Consult your laser safety officer. During assembly,
the complete Evaluation Kit has to be disconnected from the power supply at all times.
2.3 Handling of Electrostatic Sensitive Devices
The provided Evaluation Kit is sensitive to electrostatic discharge. The electronic components might be damaged especially
in case of a static discharge to the transceiver when handling and when the components are connected to external devices.
Thus, it is important to apply usual ESD handling procedures.
When the Evaluation Kit is connected to external components like a customer-specific module, it is important that the link is
not powered.
2.4 Handling of Optical Fibers and Connectors
The facets of the optical fibers are extremely sensitive to any contamination. Due to the high power density, any
contamination would directly lead to a permanent damage of the fiber. In order to avoid permanent damage to the fiber, a
bending radius of less than 30 mm must be avoided. Thus, proper handling of the fibers and connectors is required.
The optical components are equipped with E2000 connectors. When these connectors are plugged-in and removed from
the optical wall connector, any excessive force must be avoided to prevent permanent damage of the connectors.
Special caution must be applied when the Evaluation kit is assembled. Under no circumstances should the fibers for power
and data be intermixed. An exposure of the data transmitter to the high power laser beam would instantly lead to a permanent
damage of the Evaluation Kit.

Chapter 3: Quick Guide
In this section, step-by-step instructions are given in order to assemble and bring-up the optical power link.
3.1 How to Assemble the Evaluation Kit
The Evaluation Kit comes with the following components:
1 pc Tx Module (TxM) with high power laser diode and E2000 pigtail
1 pc Rx Module (RxM)
1 pc sensor board module (SBM) as reference design
1 pc 40-pin flexible flat cable (FFC)
3 pcs short fiber adapters (SFA), each with 1x E2000 and 1x ST connector
2 pcs optical wall connector (OWC) for duplex E2000
1 pc optical lead cable (OLC), 10 m patch cord, with duplex OM1 fibers and E2000 connectors
1 USB stick with software and documentation
Additionally, the following components are required in order to operate the link. These components are not included in the
Evaluation Kit:
1 computer (customer host server, CHS) with 100 Base-Tx Ethernet port; to use the engineering tool software, a
Windows 10 operating system is required.
1 pc Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch with at least 1 PoE port and 1 link to CHS
2 pc patch cords Cat 5e or better
Optional: TI’s BOOSTXL-SENSORS BoosterPack Plug-In Module, which can be attached to the CBM
The Evaluation Kit is assembled according to the following steps:
1. Tx module: Remove the dust cap of the TXM. Then connect one SFA to the data transceiver on the TxM (use the ST
connector). Then remove the two dust plugs of the OWC and insert the E2000 connector of the laser diode into the right
port of the OWC. Then insert the E2000 connector of the laser diode into the right port of the OWC. Then insert the E2000
connector of the data transceiver into the left port of the OWC.

2. Rx module: Remove the dust caps of the optical power converter (OPC) and the data transceiver. Then connect each
one SFA to the data transceiver and the OPC on the RxM (use the ST connector). Remove the two dust caps of the
OWC. Then insert the E2000 connectors of these two SFAs to the other OWC. The data transceiver needs to be inserted
on the right port, the power receiver to the left port.
3. If the plug-in sensor module is available, connect the sensor module to the CBM. Then if a connect CBM is used, connect
the RxM and the CBM with the FFC cable.

4. Connect the two OWCs with the duplex patch cord.
WARNING! If the data and power cables are intermixed, this will lead to permanent damage of the device. The cables are
marked accordingly.
5. Make sure that the PoE switch is not powered. Then use the two Ethernet patch cords to connect the CHS and the TxM
to the PoE switch.
DANGER! If the PoE switch is powered up, the TxM would power up. Thus the laser could emit radiation.
6. Establish and check laser safety measures.
7. Power up the PoE switch.

3.2 How to Install the Engineering Tool
The engineering tool is a software application for installation on a PC with a Microsoft Windows 7/8/10 operating system. It
allows to connect to the power and data link through TCP/IP for control commands and data receiving. Before installation,
make sure that the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio Runtime Environment is installed. Then execute the installation
program.
3.3 How to Connect to the TxM
3.3.1 Precondition
Physically connect TxM Module and the PC (CHS) to the Power-over-Ethernet switch; data rate is 100 Mb/s full duplex.
Change the IP address of the network adapter at PC as 169.254.0.1.
Change the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0.
System environment variable path is set for LMFlash.exe. (e.g., C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas
Instruments\Stellaris\LM Flash Programmer).
Close all other programs, which could interfere with the TxM network adapter.
3.3.2 Required Steps
Open Broadcom.POF.MaintenanceTool.exe.
1. Select network Adapter, which is connected to TxM Module network (only IPv4 is allowed).
2. Click Find Devices.
3. If devices are found, select device from list. If no devices are found, check Windows settings and try to ping TxM Module.
4. Click Connect device. See log output below for connection status.
5. Execute command (Command Builder currently not available). See log output for requests and responses.

3.4 How to Power Up the RxM
3.4.1 Precondition
Connection to TxM has been established by MaintenanceTool.
Optical connection between TxM and RxM is established.
3.4.2 Required Steps
1. Open Commands tab.
2. First the laser driver has to be configured. This can be done as follows:
a. Go to input field Poti raw.
b. Enter the value 200.
c. Press Set.
DANGER! The next step switches on the laser. Check if laser safety measures are in place.
3. To switch on the laser, press the button High Power Laser (On).
4. Now the laser has been switched on. To switch off, the laser press High Power Laser (Off).

5. In tab Tx Info, press the button Get Info to display the laser current and other parameters. In case RxM successfully has
powered up, the RxM Software status is displayed.
3.5 How to Get the Status Information
3.5.1 Precondition
Connection to TxM has been established by MaintenanceTool.
Optical connection between TxM and RxM is established.
3.5.2 Required Steps
1. The TxM or RxM working status can be queried by sending commands to TxM port 2104.
For example, to get TxM status, Type 0x71 in command field in tab Command Builder and hit Send.
2. Similarly, the following commands can be sent to request:
0x71= Request TxM status
0x72= Get precision time
0x79= Get errors
0x7C= Get FIFO statistics
0x87= Request RxM status
0x94= Request RxM firmware version

3.6 How to Send and Receive Data between CHS and CBM
3.6.1 Precondition
Connection to TxM has been established by MaintenanceTool.
Optical connection between TxM and RxM is established.
CBM module is attached to RxM with flat ribbon cable.
3.6.2 Required Steps
MaintenanceTool automatically reads CBM data over TxM port 2101 and displays CBM data stream in data field. The CBM
data volume can be significant, or the CBM data might need post processing. The MaintenanceTool does not decode the
meaning of CBM data. Therefore, it is recommended to read and process CBM data with standalone application as
described in Section 6.5, Code Snippet for CBM Communication. Any data written to CBM TCP port is tunneled
transparently to CBM over SPI.
For example:
writing { 0x0A, 0x0B, 0x0C, 0x0D, 0x0E, 0x0F } on TCP port 2101 will tunnel the payload { 0x0A, 0x0B,
0x0C, 0x0D, 0x0E, 0x0F } over CBM SPI read. Similarly, downstream data received by RxM from CBM over SPI
interface can be read on CHS by read operation on socket. read_data(g_receivedRsponse,255) call in section Code
snippet for CBM communication reads 255 bytes of data from CBM.

3.7 How to Receive and Visualize Sensor Data
The Evaluation Kit has a model CBM board included. A pluggable third-party sensor board can be stacked on the CBM
board. The sensor board, stacked on the CBM, has the following features:
Geomagnetic field sensor for eCompass applications
– Magnetic field resolution 0.3 µT
– Magnetic field range ±1300 µT(x,y-axis) and ±2500 µT(z-axis)
Low noise inertial measurement unit for augmented reality applications
– 3 axis accelerometer
– 3 axis gyroscope
– Can be used in synchronous with external devices such as geomagnetic sensor
Integrated environmental unit
– Pressure sensor with an accuracy of ±0.12 hPa, which is equivalent to ±1m in altitude
– Humidity sensor with an accuracy of ±3% relative humidity
– Ambient temperature sensor
Ambient light sensor
– Measures intensity of visible light with wide dynamic range 0.01 to 83000 Lux and 1%IR response
Contactless infrared thermopile sensor (optional)
– Measures object temperature without making contact with the object
– Accuracy 0.03125°C
The CBM has following onboard measurement:
Current consumption of CBM in mA
CBM on board supply voltage in Volt
Power consumption of CBM derived from the above two units
External an analog voltage sensor
MCU internal temperature
A sensor data visualization application is included in the kit. The application can visualize all of the above sensor data in
digital format. A graphical visualization of geomagnetic and inertial measurement units, as well gesture visualization, are
given. The cabapp software application fetches data from the sensor board over optical link for visualization as shown
below.

To start sensor data visualization, click Refresh to get the IP address of TxM, and then click Connect.
The cabapp application can be started before or after the sensor board is optically powered. However, it is recommended
to start the cabapp application and then power up the sensor board by using th PoF application. To switch the laser on,
connect TxM, and then choose Laser ON push button on PoF.exe as shown below.

3.8 How to Achieve Laser-Class 1 on System Level
This Evaluation Kit allows the direct control of the laser diode current. This means that the software laser safety mechanism
is not enforced. In addition, there is no hardware protection. Thus, the evaluation kit is a laser class 4 product.
Laser class 1 needs to be implemented and certified by the customer on system level. However, the evaluation kit already
implements safety mechanisms that can support the customer to achieve this target.
For mechanical protection, E2000 connectors with metal shields are used. Those shields block the beam in case the
connector is disassembled.
Additionally, the software implements a low power mode. In this case, the laser diode is operated in pulsed condition in order
to achieve eye safety. Only if the RxM is connected, the TxM switches to high-power mode. With this mechanism, fiber
breakage or a removal of the connector can be detected. However, this mechanism needs to be qualified by the customer
in his system.
3.9 How to Update the Firmware
CAUTION! Updating the TxM/RxM with the wrong firmware or any failure during the update process might damage the
respective module and will make the link no longer usable.
3.9.1 Precondition
Connection to TxM has been established by MaintenanceTool.
TI's LM Flash programmer has been installed.
Optical connection between TxM and RxM is established.
For RxM update: The RxM has been powered up.
3.9.2 Required Steps
1. Go to tab FW Update.
2. Select the respective firmware image.
3. Press the button Start TxM Update to start the update process.

Chapter 4: Hardware Components (Included)
4.1 Tx Module (TxM)
The TxM is the module that transmits optical power to the RxM. It contains a high power laser diode, an MCU, and an optical
transceiver. The TxM connects to a power-over-Ethernet switch. The TxM provides four mounting points by which it can be
screwed to a housing or baseplate.
4.2 Rx Module (RxM)
The RxM is the module that receives optical power and converts it back to electrical power. It contains an MCU and an optical
transceiver. The RxM offers a 40-pin connector, which allows to connect a customer-specific board. The RxM interface is
shown in section.

4.3 Customer Board Module (CBM)
The customer board module is a template for any customer-specific sensor board and can be used as a starting point for
further developments. On the CBM, the interface to the RxM is implemented. Shunt resistors are selected by a rotary switch
in order to evaluate the impact of power consumption on the system performance. A port is available in order to program
new firmware.
TI’s BOOSTXL-SENSORS BoosterPack Plug-In Module can be attached to the CBM by the 40-pin post connectors.
Additional analogue and GPIO lines are available.
