4.2.3.1 VirtualLANs
AVirtualLAN(VLAN)isalogicalnetworkgroupthatlimitsthebroadcastdomain.Itallowsyoutoisolatenetworktrafficsoonly
membersoftheVLANreceivetrafficfromthesameVLANmembers.Basically,creatingaVLANwithinaswitchislogicallyequivalent
ofreconnectingagroupofnetworkdevicestoanotherLayer2switch.However,allthenetworkdevicesarestillpluggedintothe
sameswitchphysically.Astationcanbelongtomorethan oneVLANgroup.VLANpreventsusersfromaccessingnetworkresources
ofanotheronthesameLAN,thustheuserscannotseetheharddisksandprintersofanotheruserinthesamebuilding.VLANcan
alsoincreasethenetworkperformancebyreducingthebroadcasttrafficandenhancethesecurityofthenetworkbyisolatinggroups.
ThisSwitchsupportstwotypesofVLANs:

IEEE802.1Q(tag)‐based
OnlyoneofthetwoVLANtypescanbeenabledatonetime.
PortbasedVLANsareVLANswherethepacketforwardingdecisionismadebased onthedestinationMACaddressanditsassociated
port.YoumustdefinetheoutgoingportsallowedforeachportwhenyouuseportbasedVLANs.InportbasedVLANs,thepackets
receivedfromoneportcanonlybesenttotheportswhichareconfiguredtothesameVLAN.Asshowninthefollowingfigure,the
switchadministratorconfiguredport1~2asVLAN1andport3~4asVLAN2.Thepacketsreceivedfromport1canonlybeforwarded
toport2.Thepacketsreceivedfromport2canonlybeforwardedtoport1.ThatmeansthecomputerAcansendpacketsto
computerB,andviceversa.ThesamesituationalsooccurredinVLAN2.ThecomputerCandDcancommunicatewitheachother.
However,thecomputersinVLAN1cannotseethecomputersinVLAN2sincetheybelongedtodifferentVLANs.
