DESCRIPTION
The Quad Fiber Remote SFP (QDFRS) is a customer premise fiber optic
access unit. The QDFRS provides four DS1 interfaces that can be multi-
plexed together over single-mode fiber to a Total Access
®
3000/3010
Quad Fiber Central Office SFP Module (QDFCS; P/N 1181308L8).
The QDFRS provides a high degree of resistance to damage that is
typically caused by Ground Potential Rises (GPRs), by optically isolating
the network interface from the customer side and providing DS1 inter-
faces with over 6 kV of isolation with respect to ground.
The QDFRS operates using ±24 or ±48 VDC, nominal.
The QDFRS uses a Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) to provide the
optical interface. The SFPs supported are listed in the table below.
Note: All SFPs use LC connectors.
Operation
The QDFRS provides a platform to exchange data between four DSls and
an optical fiber interface. The customer data connection is through the
RJ-48C connectors. An optical fiber interface is provided for communi-
cation with the loop. The QDFRS operates with a QDFCS module at the
other end of the fiber optic cable.
DS1 loop connections are made via four RJ-48C connectors. For each
connector, transmit tip and ring are on pins 2 and 1, and receive tip and
ring are on pins 5 and 4, respectively. Connect the single-mode fiber(s)
to the LC connectors on the QDFRS back panel (requires SFP).
The RJ-48C pin-out configuration is illustrated in the figure below.

INSTALLATION
Inspect the QDFRS. If damaged, file a claim with the carrier and then
contact ADTRAN. Refer to “Warranty” for more information.
To install the QDFRS, complete the following steps:
1. Place the QDFRS where ±24 or ±48 VDC power is available.
2. If wallmount installation is required, attach the supplied hangers to
the QDFRS and mount it accordingly.
3. Insert the desired SFP into the QDFRS rear panel
FIBER OPTICS slot.
NOTE: In a standard QDFCS/QDFRS configuration:
Install SFP3B1 (P/N 1442702PG1) in the QDFCS.
Install SFP3B2 (P/N 1442702PG2) in the QDFRS.
4. Connect the positive and negative power wires to the positive and
negative terminals on the rear of the QDFRS.
5. Connect the ground wire to the ground slot of the connector, or to
the #10 lug on the side of the QDFRS.
6. Connect the optical fiber(s) to the LC connectors on the SFP.
NOTE: When the QDFRS powers up, it performs a self-test for about 30
seconds. When the test is complete, the LEDs reflect the current
status of the QDFRS. Refer to “LEDs” for LED indications.
DIAGNOSTICS
The options available for diagnostics include front panel LEDs, loopback
tests, performance monitoring, and a DS1 test jack. Loopbacks can be
initiated remotely from the QDFCS or manually from the QDFRS.
NOTE: Loopback and test jack modes are selected on the QDFCS.
LEDs
Pushbuttons
Use the pushbuttons on the QDFRS front panel to initiate bilateral
loopbacks. Data from the port input is sent to the port output, and data
from the fiber interface is sent back to the fiber.

COMPLIANCE
CAUTION: Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage electronic modules.
When handling modules, wear an antistatic discharge wrist
strap to prevent damage to electronic components. Place
modules in antistatic packing material when transporting or
storing. When working on modules, always place them on an
approved antistatic mat that is electrically grounded.
The Quad Fiber Remote SFP (P/N 1181307L8) is NRTL Listed to
the applicable UL standards. The QDFRS meets or exceeds all
the applicable requirements of NEBS, Telcordia GR-63-CORE,
GR-78-CORE, and GR-1089-CORE.
The QDFRS is intended for deployment in Central Office type
facilities, EEEs, EECs, and locations where the NEC applies
(ex. Customer Premises). Install the QDFRS in a restricted
access location.
This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules. Operation is subject
to the following two conditions:
1. This device may not cause harmful interference
2. This device must accept any interference received, including
interference that may cause undesired operation.
Changes or modifications not expressly approved by ADTRAN could void
the user's authority to operate this equipment.
CAUTION: Per GR-1089-CORE Section 9, the QDFRS does not have an
internal DC connection between battery return and frame
ground. The QDFRS can be installed in a DC-I (isolated) or
DC-C (common) installation. If the QDFRS is installed in a
DC-C (common) installation, the ampacity of the conductor
connecting the equipment frame to the battery return conductor
shall be equal to or greater than the ampacity of the associated
battery return conductor.
NOTE: The DSX-1 ports are classified as Type 2 or 4, as defined in
Appendix B of GR-1089-CORE Issue 4, and are suitable for
connection to intra-building or unexposed wiring or cabling only. Do
not metallically connect these ports to interfaces which connect to
the Outside Plant (OSP) or to OSP wiring.
The DSX-1 ports are designed for use as intra-building interfaces
only (Type 2 or Type 4 ports as described in GR-1089-CORE Issue
4) and require isolation from exposed OSP cabling. The addition of
Primary Protectors is not sufficient protection in order to connect
these interfaces metallically to OSP wiring.
The OC-3 SFP port is optical and therefore is not classified as any
type of port as defined in Appendix B of GR-1089-CORE Issue 4.
Current limiting protectors are not required.
The QDFRS is designed to operate with a nominal operating voltage
of ±24 VDC or ±48 VDC and a minimum operating voltage of ±20
VDC. The QDFRS will not be damaged by any steady state voltage
below –56.7 VDC.
Configuration Code Input Output
Power Code (PC) F C
Telecommunication Code (TC)
Installation Code (IC) A
Test Jack
The test jack has two modes (selected on the QDFCS):
Monitor Mode (non-intrusive): looks at a port in either direction
Intrusive Mode: “breaks” a port in either direction
MAINTENANCE
The QDFRS does not require routine hardware maintenance for normal
operation. ADTRAN does not recommend that repairs be attempted in
the field. Repair services may be obtained by returning the defective unit
to ADTRAN.
Field support for software is provided through upgrade facilities. Refer to
“Warranty” for further information.
PROVISIONING
Most provisioning is handled through remote management from the
QDFCS. To directly access the QDFRS via the rear-panel DB-9 craft
port, connect a VT100 (or compatible) terminal, set to:
9600 bps
8 data bits
No parity
No flow control
1 stop bit
Connection is directly to the QDF Main menu, with no login step. To
traverse the menus, select the desired entry and press
ENTER. To return
to the previous menu, press
ESC.
The QDFRS retains provisioning data in nonvolatile memory, in case of
a loss of power.
Factory Defaults
On installation, the QDFRS is provisioned to factory default settings.
