Keycard Switch Station
This install guide covers the Echoex Solutions Keycard Switch Station
Model#: KSS-UW Keycard Switch Station, White, 902 MHz
Product Overview
The keycard switch stations communicate wirelessly with Echoex lighting and load
controllers. The KSS has been designed to allow retrotting of suites and buildings so
energy loads are only operational when needed reducing energy consumption and
costs. Keycards are used extensively in the hospitality industry. These stations are
used by guests to indicate when they’ve entered their hospitality suite by inserting
the keycard supplied by the facility into the station. When the guests leave, they
extract the keycard providing indication of the suites vacant state. Linked room
control devices can be used to set-back temperature controls or switch lighting
circuits off to conserve energy.
With each card insertion, the station will provide a slight audible click, a green LED
blink (visible through the keycard plastic) and a card inserted“ transmission to linked
receivers. The KSS is powered by a replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery and has an
expected lifetime of 100,000 actuations over 10 years. The station will indicate a low
battery condition by blinking a red LED once upon any card insertion.
The keycard station is activated with an 85.60 x 53.98 mm (3.37 x 2.125”) card as
specied by ISO/IEC7810 - ID-1 (thickness of 0.76 mm (0.03”).
Preparing to Install
Careful consideration should be made when locating the controllers and stations
based on the construction materials in the space and possibility of occupant’s
furniture disrupting the transmissions. The station should be installed in the same
space as the device controlling the lighting or temperature controls.
The KSS switch stations need to be mounted to a rm surface. They can be ush
mounted with the screws and wall anchors (not supplied). Alternately, the station can
be mounted on mud rings. For indoor use only.
To mount over line voltage device boxes, please order our UL approved barrier - see
accessories for ordering information.

Installation
1. The screw-less face plate has a snap on design.
Remove the face plate by pressing down with
thumbs on a corner of the raised area and ngers
on the back center of the unit. The KSS-UW can
be mounted with wall anchors and #6 screws
(not supplied). Determine where the station is
to be located then hold the switch station to the
surface of the drywall, (make sure no studs are
behind and ensure the station is level and plumb).
Mark the locations for the wall anchors using the
screw holes as a template, then install the wall
anchors. Screw the KSS to the wall anchors.
Alternate mounting: The KSS can be mounted to a mud ring or with a separate
order item (Barrier kit), it can also be installed on wall outlets. (See Accessories
section or data sheet for ordering information). Follow the Barrier kit
(8188K100X-5) installation instructions.
2. Snap on both the top and bottom snaps of the faceplate (position the slot on the
cover plate on the bottom of the switch station).
3. Test the operation of the station. A slight audible click is expected, and the green
LED will blink on each card insertion to indicate the message was transmitted
and the last measured battery voltage is good. The LED blink is visible through
the keycard plastic (ambient light may need to be dimmed to view)
.
i
Note:
When a card is inserted and a single Red LED blinks, it is
an indication that the message was transmitted but the
battery voltage is low (less than 2.2V).
When the Red LED blinks 3 times on a card insertion the
message was not transmitted and the battery is critically
low (less than 2.0 V) Replace the batteries immediately.
Linking a Station to an Echoex Controller
The linking process requires the controller or receiver to be mounted, powered and
within range of the station to be linked. Each receiver can support up to 20-30 switch
stations and/or sensors, depending on receiver model.
1. Activate the LEARN button on the controller
2. Insert and extract a card three times in quick succession.
3. Deactivate LEARN mode at the receiver (LEARN mode will time out after 30 s).
4. Test operation of the station by inserting and extracting the card several times.
There is an egress timer on the card extraction, wait 40 seconds before re-
inserting the card.
Replacing the Battery
The keycard station must be removed from the wall to access the battery. The battery cover

is on the back of the KSS and slides off as indicated by the arrow.
Before inserting the new battery, press the test button for 10
seconds to discharge any stored energy in the station. Replace
the battery with a CR2032 coin cell. The positive side faces the
slide out battery cover. When a battery is inserted a successful
station start up is indicated by an LED sequence: green -> yellow
-> red repeated three times.
A weak battery will cause a repeating red blink roughly every
half second. - A stuck button will cause a repeating red
blink roughly every 5 seconds.
Test Modes
1. Press the button on the side of the unit (access from
back side) using a small tool.
2. Press and hold the side button until all LEDs blink (about 5 seconds)
3. Tap the button to scroll through the selections. (see table below)
4. To select an item, press and hold the button until all the LEDs blink (about 5
seconds). The LED blink is visible through the keycard plastic (ambient light
may need to be dimmed to view the LED blinks)
.
Test mode times out after 180 seconds.

Reset
When reset, a successful switch start up is indicated by a LED sequence: green -> yellow ->
red repeated three times.
A weak battery will cause a repeating red blink roughly every half second, or a triple red
blink if the battery is critically (less than 2 V). A stuck button will cause a repeating red blink
roughly every 5 seconds
Range Confirmation
Provides visual feedback of the KSS stations signal strength received by a linked
Echoex controller.
i
Note:
1. Disable all repeaters in range
2. The station should only be linked to one controller
when running the test

2. Tap the button to scroll through the selections. When the yellow LED is blinking,
press and hold the side button until all the LEDs blink (about 5 seconds)
All three LED’s will blink on and off quickly for a second followed by a pause, then
repeats. When the sensor receives a range conrmation telegram from the linked
controller, the sensor displays the signal strength status for 2 seconds, see table
below.
LED - blinking Signal Strength Status
Green -41 to -70 dBm Best
Yellow -70 to -80 dBm Good
Red -80 to -95 dBm Not ideal, try moving sensor closer
None No linked controllers detected. Move sensor closer or add telegram
repeating
The test will repeat every 10 seconds and run for a duration of 180 seconds.
Error Codes
When a low battery state has been detected during normal operation, the battery
status is blinked about once per minute. A single red blink indicates the last measured
battery voltage is low. A triple red blink indicates the battery voltage is critically low
(less than 2.0V) and should be replaced immediately.
A stuck button will cause the red LED to blink ~ every 5 seconds.
