2.2 Intended use
The radiator thermostats Basic and Comfort can be used to create a convenient single room
control by operating the radiator heating via wireless signal. The radiator thermostats are fully
compatible with radiator valves with an M30 x1.5 thread. For other valves (e.g. Danfoss), one of
the supplied adapters must be used.
Only AA alkaline batteries are permitted for use. The scope of delivery includes 2 batteries.
The device is intended for the following:

Installation in dry interior rooms
The intended use also includes adherence to all specifications in this manual.

2.3 Improper use
Each use not listed in Chapter 2.2 “Intended use“ on page 5 is deemed improper use and can
lead to personal injury and damage to property.
ABB is not liable for damages caused by use deemed contrary to the intended use of the
device. The associated risk is borne exclusively by the user/operator.
The device is not intended for the following:

2.4 Target group / Qualifications of personnel
No special qualifications are needed to connect and operate the device.

2.5 Safety instructions
Warning - Risk of sustaining injuries!
An improper use of batteries can lead to the risk of sustaining injuries!
Keep the batteries away from children.
In case of damaged batteries; avoid contact with skin, eyes and mucous
membranes.
When coming into contact with battery acid, clean the affected parts
immediately with plenty of clean water and, if necessary, contact a
doctor.
Caution! - Risk of damaging the device due to external factors!
Moisture and contamination can damage the device.
Protect the device against humidity, dirt and damage during transport,
storage and operation.
2.6 Use of batteries
To guarantee the correct function of the device, please observe the following points:
Do not use rechargeable batteries! The use of rechargeable batteries is not recommended
due to their lower voltage level in comparison to standard batteries.
Use only Type AA alkaline batteries.
Remove discharged batteries immediately from the device.
Do not use new batteries and used ones together.
If necessary, clean the batteries and contacts before inserting them.
2.7 Environment
Consider the protection of the environment!
Used electric and electronic devices must not be disposed of with domestic
waste.
The device contains valuable raw materials which can be recycled.
Therefore, dispose of the device at the appropriate collecting depot.
All packaging materials and devices bear the markings and test seals for proper disposal.
Always dispose of the packaging material and electric devices and their components via the
authorized collecting depots and disposal companies.
The products meet the legal requirements, in particular the laws governing electronic and

The radiator thermostats HA-S-1-WL and HA-S-2-WL can be used to create a convenient single
room control of the temperature by operating the radiator heating (water-bearing radiators)
guided via wireless signal. No laying of cables required. Communication with the free@home
system is carried out wireless.
The radiator thermostats have an integrated temperature sensor, an integrated temperature
control, as well as an electric motor with drive unit to move the heating valve to a desired
position.
Other than the System Access Point, the devices require no further accessories for
commissioning.
The measured actual temperature value of the radiator thermostats is not displayed in the
visualization of the ABB-free@home
®
app.
The devices are not pre-programmed. Programming is carried out via the user interface of the
System Access Point.
Battery service life
The service life of the battery depends mainly on the respective usage. This means on how
often the motor of the actuating drive is moved, on the battery type and its state of charge.
Standard usage (in actuating drive status: 2 setpoint adjustments per day; in OFF mode from
May to September) the service life of the battery lasts generally up to 2 years.
Noise impairment
An electric motor operates inside the actuating drive. It influences the position of the valve
tappet via a drive unit. Fundamentally there is a low noise impairment when the motor moves to
a new valve position.
A new valve position is moved to when the user manually specifies a new setpoint value or a
time program. Also to regulate and to maintain a constant temperature an opening and closing
of the valve is necessary.
Movements of the motor are kept to a minimum to save power.

Basic functions of Basic
The Basic version of the device has two push-buttons on top of the device:
OFF (off button): Switches the device into the OFF mode. This means that the temperature
is no longer regulated. The frost protection function and valve protection function are active.
Comfort: Switches the device into Comfort mode. The temperature is regulated to the
setpoint value. The setpoint value can be set via a connected extension unit (e.g. a
free@home-Touch 7“ or a free@home room temperature controller) or via the ABB-
free@home
®
app.
Basic functions of Comfort
The Comfort version has two push-buttons on top of the device, as well as a rotary knob at the
front of the device:
ON/OFF (off button): Switches the device into the OFF mode or Comfort mode. The
temperature is not regulated in the OFF mode. The frost protection function and valve
protection function are active. In Comfort mode the temperature is regulated to the setpoint
value. The setpoint value can be set locally via the rotary control element. The setpoint
value can also be set via a connected extension unit (e.g. a free@home-Touch 7“ or a
free@home room temperature controller) or via the ABB-free@home
®
app.
ECO: This is used to switch over between Comfort and ECO mode. In ECO mode the
temperature is reduced by a pre-programmed value. Example: You are leaving the room for
a few hours; the room temperature is to be reduced to save energy; however, the room is
not to cool down completely.

Additional functions of both device versions
Extension unit mode: The radiator thermostat can be linked with other free@home
devices, so that these can then be used as "Extension unit" to remote control the heating
mode and the setpoint value of the radiator thermostat.
The temperature measurement and regulation continues to be carried out in this mode
locally in the radiator thermostat.

Low battery warning: The user is informed when the power of the battery drops below a
critical level. Although the radiator thermostat will continue to function for a few days after
the warning, replacement batteries should be kept ready. When the battery is completely
flat, the radiator thermostat remains in the position set last!
Valve protection function: To protect the valve, the radiator thermostat carries out a valve
protection movement every two weeks. The valve is moved to the fully open and closed
position once.
Valve adaptation: The adaptation movement is carried out during commissioning of the
radiator thermostat. This determines whether the valve can be actuated and the size of the
stroke for calibrating the radiator thermostat to this valve. A defective or non-existing valve
leads to an error message.
In case of a defective valve, please contact the installer of your heating system to replace
the valve.
Window open detection: The radiator thermostat can be linked with a window contact in
the free@home configuration interface. When the window is opened, the radiator thermostat
is switched off automatically or switched back on again when the window is closed.

5 Connection and installation
Note
Transmitter and receiver communicate via radio control. The transmission range
depends on the structural conditions. Walls and ceilings, especially steel
reinforcements or metal claddings, reduce the transmission range. The distance
of components to other transmitters that also emit high-frequency signals (e.g.
computers, audio and video systems) should be at least 1 m.
Radio range
To minimize the consumption of power, battery-operated free@home wireless devices are not
operated as repeaters. Different to free@home wireless devices with mains power, a received
command is therefore not transferred.
That is why during the installation it should ensured that there is at least one free@home
wireless device with mains power supply within the range of the battery-operated device.

Planning and application instructions for the system are available in the ABB-free@home

system manual. This can be downloaded at www.abb.com/freeathome.
5.1 Installation
Mounting and installation are identical for both device versions. In the following, only the
Comfort version is shown as an example.
If the device is not in factory settings, the batteries must first be inserted, (See “Inserting the
batteries“ on page 16). The adjusting pin moves back and forth until the error condition "Er1" is
triggered. The thermostat can then be fitted.
Only install on common radiator valves located in dry, indoor rooms. Observe the currently valid
regulations.
Note
For the Basic version the error messages can only be viewed via the web-based
interface of the System Access Point.

Fitting the thermostat (factory settings)
1. Turn the old thermostat to fully open.
2. Loosen the fixture and pull the
thermostat head off the valve.
3*. If the union nut does not fit on the
valve, attach the adapter.
Completely remove the
connecting pieces (marked with
scissor symbol) of the plastic
adapters before using one of the
enclosed adapters!
If the valve has a thread size
different to M30 x 1.5 mm, please
use one of the listed adapters,

5. Turn the thermostat until it is tight.
Finally, remove the identification
label and glue it into the list (at
System Access Point).
Inserting the batteries
1. Press the lever underneath the
device towards the battery lid.
2. Lever out the battery lid.
3. Pull out the battery compartment.
4. Insert batteries into the battery
compartment.
Check that the polarity is correct!
5. Slide in the battery compartment
again until the lever engages.
The LED flashes briefly (battery
function test).
The device then carries out an
adjustment operation.
Only for the Comfort version:
"ADA" appears in the display.
The device is now ready for
commissioning.

5.2 Dismantling
Caution – damage to property
Damage to the device resulting from incorrect dismantling position
During dismantling, the device must be in the dismantling position. For this
purpose, the adjusting pin must be retracted.

6 Commissioning
Commissioning of the device is always carried out via the Web-based surface of the System
Access Point. It is assumed that the basic commissioning steps of the overall system have
already been carried out. Knowledge about the Web-based commissioning software of the
System Access Point is assumed.
The System Access Point establishes the connection between the free@home participants and
the smartphone, tablet or PC. The System Access Point is used to identify and program the
participants during commissioning.
When energized, Basic and Comfort thermostats that have not been programmed are in
programming mode for 10 minutes and can be logged into the system. Programmed devices
share information about their type and supported functions with the System Access Point.
During initial commissioning all devices are given a universal name. The installer must change
this name within the commissioning process to a name practical and specific for the system.
The devices must be parameterised for the use of additional functions.

6.1 Coupling of wireless devices with the System Access Point
6.1.1 Coupling devices
free@home wireless devices must first be coupled with the System Access Point before they
can be used in a project. The devices exchange a security key during the coupling process.
Communication between devices is carried out encrypted after coupling and they are firmly
connected with the System Access Point. Coupled devices cannot be connected with a different
System Access Point. They must first be reset to the factory settings.
Note
Separate commissioning is carried out for thermostats.
Carry out the following steps to couple one or several devices with the system:
1. Install the free@home wireless device(s).
2. Use your smartphone, tablet or PC to call up the user interface of the System Access Point
that is ready for use.
3. Remove the batteries from the device.
4. Start the scanning mode ("Settings" > "free@home-Wireless" > "Search for wireless
devices“).

5. Insert the batteries into the device.
The LED of the thermostat flashes briefly (battery function test).
The devices are now in programming mode for 10 minutes. The LED [1] flashes as long
as the programming mode is active.

The System Access Point consecutively scans all free@home wireless devices. Devices
that are in programming mode are integrated automatically into the system. The
scanning process ends 10 minutes after the last device has been found.
Integrated devices are listed in the "Device list" of the user interface.
6. Use the serial numbers to check whether all installed devices have been found.
If a device has not been found, reset it to the factory settings and start a new scanning
process.
Possible reasons for not finding devices:
The device is not in programming mode.
The 10-minute programming time has expired.
The device has already been coupled with a different system.

6.1.2 Resetting the wireless device (thermostat) to the factory settings
1. Remove the batteries from the device and wait for 30 seconds.
2. Insert the batteries again and keep the button [1] pressed for at least 10 seconds, until the
LED stops flashing.

The factory settings are restored and the device can now be programmed again.
6.2 Allocation of devices and definition of channels
The devices connected to the system must be identified, i.e. they are allocated to a room
according to their function and are given a practical name.
The allocation is made via the "Devices" allocation function of the Web-based
user interface of the System Access Point.
The following figures show an example of the Basic version.
Always ensure that the correct filter is set, so that the correct device group is displayed.
