Quick Start Guide
This document is intended to provide basic information about configuration, installation,
and commissioning of the Sensata 6VW sensor. It also includes information regarding
the safe use and regulatory approvals. For more information, please reference the
Sensata 6VW Operation Manual.

Configuration
The Sensata IQ DIY App is a powerful, yet simple tool to support remote configuration of
the 6VW sensors. With the information gathered about your machine assets, you can
quickly navigate through the Sensata DIY app and prepare yourself for the physical
installation of the devices.
Installation and Commissioning
Before beginning the installation process:
• Warning: The device must only be installed by a competent person is someone who
has the necessary technical knowledge to inspect work equipment and plants that
require monitoring. This specialist knowledge can be gained through vocational
training, professional experience and recent professional activity.
• Warning: The asset the device is to be installed on must be in a safe condition before
installation can begin.
• Warning: Do not remove or replace the battery in a hazardous area.
• Warning: Under certain extreme circumstances, the non-metallic parts incorporated
in the enclosure of this equipment may generate an ignition-capable level of
electrostatic discharge.
• Warning: The sensor shall not be installed in a location where the external conditions
are conducive to the build-up of electrostatic charge on such surfaces.
• Warning: Do not switch the device on or off or use any of the switches in the
hazardous area.
• Warning: Do not remove or replace the battery in the hazardous area.
• Warning: Installation in an explosive environment must be in accordance with the
appropriate local, national, and international standards, codes, and practices.
• The equipment shall only be cleaned with a damp cloth.
• The sensor shall be installed on an earthed metal frame.
• Verify the connectivity and strength of the cellular or Wi-Fi network to ensure that the
sensor will operate at the machine asset location before turning on the device. For

• The battery comes with the device, but it is not electrically connected when the device
is shipped.
1. Use your hands to unscrew and remove the blue cover.
2. Remove the isolating paper tab.
3. To stud mount the device (recommended), properly clean the mounting surface. It
should be clean and free of any residue, paint, or other objects. (Consult the Operation
Manual for additional mounting options and instructions.)
4. Prepare a flat surface using a spot face tool and drill pilot hole for tapping
5. Tap for desired threading (1/4'' – 28 UNF or M8)
6. Install sensor using the stud or adapter stud (Sensata part number 6VW3-01 or 6VW3-
09).
7. Turn the device on by using the slide switch.
8. Use your hand to replace and tighten the cover.
Shipping Considerations
• Contact Sensata Product Support to obtain a Return Materials Authorization (RMA)
number.
• The unit was shipped to you with the battery inside but isolated. Remove the isolating
paper tab to connect the battery. If returning the 6VW sensor, you may remove the
battery assembly prior to shipping and dispose of properly.
• Primary lithium batteries are regulated in transportation by the U.S. Department of
Transportation and are also covered by IATA (International Air Transport Association),
ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), and ADR (European Ground
Transportation of Dangerous Goods).
• It is the responsibility of the shipper to ensure compliance with these or any other local
requirements. Please consult current regulations and requirements before shipping.
Product Certifications
The 6VW sensor has several certifications and approvals including CE, FCC, ISED, RED,
CSA, and ATEX. For a complete list of product certifications, see product datasheet

Safety Information
For personal and system safety, and for optimum sensor performance, care should be
given to read and understand the user documentation before installing, using, or
maintaining this device. For more information, see the 6VW Operation Manual.

Battery Information
Replacing the battery assembly in hazardous locations
The battery must not be replaced in hazardous locations. The device must be moved to
a safe area. Review the instructions in the 6VW Operation Manual for more information.
Replacing the battery assembly in ordinary locations
Replace the battery assembly with a Sensata 6VW3-10. Follow the instructions in the
6VW Operation Manual for more information.
Installation Considerations
When choosing an installation location and position, consider the need for access to the
sensor.
Installation in Hazardous Areas
The device is covered by a hazardous area rating. It is the responsibility of the user to
verify that the device has the necessary approvals required for the intended area of use.
Warning: Installation in an explosive environment must be in accordance with the
appropriate local, national, and international standards, codes, and practices. Please
review this document for any restrictions associated with safe installation. Configure the
device outside of the hazardous area, prior to installation on the machine asset. Do not
switch the device on or off inside the hazardous area.
Temperature Limits
As a safety precaution, the following limits must be observed for temperature:
Storage Temperature: -40 to +85C (-40 to + 185F)
6VW Operating Temperature: -10 to +85C (-14 to + 185F)
Hazardous area temperature:
Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D.
-40°C (-17°F) <= Tamb <=50°C (122°F)
ATEX IECEx Zone 0 Gas Intrinsically Safe
-40°C (-17°F) <= Tamb <=50°C (131°F)
General Notice
If the device has been exposed to a hazardous substance, a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
must be included with the returned materials. An SDS is required by law to be available
to people exposed to specific hazardous substances.
