3. Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord and do not locate the product where persons will walk
on the power cord.
4. Do not attempt to service this product yourself, as opening or removing covers may expose you to
dangerous high voltage points or other risks. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.
5. When installed in the final configuration, the product must comply with the applicable Safety
Standards and regulatory requirements of the country in which it is installed. If necessary, consult
with the appropriate regulatory agencies and inspection authorities to ensure compliance.
6. A rare phenomenon can create a voltage potential between the earth grounds of two or more
buildings. If products installed in separate buildings are interconnected, the voltage potential may
cause a hazardous condition. Consult a qualified electrical consultant to determine whether or not this
phenomenon exists and, if necessary, implement corrective action prior to interconnecting the
products.
7. Input power to this product must be provided by one of the following: (1) a UL Listed/CSA certified
power source with a Class 2 or Limited Power Source (LPS) output for use in North America, or (2) a
certified transformer, with a Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) output having a maximum of 240 VA
available, for use in the country of installation.
8. General purpose cables are used with this product for connection to the network. Special cables,
which may be required by the regulatory inspection authority for the installation site, are the
responsibility of the customer. Use a UL Listed, CSA certified, minimum No. 26 AWG line cord for
connection to the Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) network.
9. In addition, since the equipment is to be used with telecommunications circuits, take the following
precautions:
Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.
Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specifically designed for wet
locations.
Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been
disconnected at the network interface.
Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.
Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during an electrical storm. There may be a
remote risk of electric shock from lightning.
Do not use the telephone to report a gas leak in the vicinity of the leak.

1823 VoIP Gateway User’s Guide
Chapter 1 Introduction
This chapter introduces the 1823 VoIP Gateway. It includes a product overview, a description of the
product’s features and applications, and an explanation of the functions of the front panel LED indicators.
1.1 Product Overview
Standard telephones connect to the RJ11 port (telephone jack) on the back of the gateway, allowing calls
to be routed to anywhere in the world— significantly reducing or eliminating long distance charges. Your
PCs connected to the gateway do not even have to be turned on for you to make calls. The 1823 solves
your entire network and telephony needs in one integrated unit, which reduces space requirements and
the cost of hardware and cabling.

Chapter 2 Hardware Installation
2.1 Back Panel
The figure below illustrates the back panel of the gateway. On the left side of the rear panel there is a
recessed reset button. This button is used to reload the factory default settings. Use a small object like a
ballpoint pen to press the button and hold it down for more than three seconds. The gateway will be reset
and all parameters will return to their factory default settings. You can verify this process by monitoring
the PHONE LED, which will turn off and then on again as the gateway restarts.

2.2 Cabling
To install the 1823 VoIP Gateway:
1. Connect the power adapter to the POWER jack of the gateway, and then plug the power adapter into
an AC wall outlet.
2. Use an RJ11 connector cable to connect an analog telephone to the Phone1 port, and, if your service
provider has provisioned two lines, the Phone2 port. An RJ11 cable is supplied with the gateway.
3. Use RJ45 cables to connect the LAN 1X, 2X, and 3X ports of the gateway to your Ethernet devices,
such as a hub or the Ethernet port of your PC. An RJ45 cable is supplied with the gateway.
4. Connect the WAN port of the gateway to your ADSL or cable modem’s LAN port with an RJ45 cable.
(If your modem's LAN port is currently connected to your PC, disconnect the cable from the modem's
LAN port and use it to connect your PC to one of the LAN ports of the gateway. Then use another
RJ45 cable to connect the WAN port of the gateway to your modem’s LAN port.)

Chapter 3 Login via the Web Browser
This section describes how to manage the VoIP gateway via a web browser from the local or remote end.
The following are the web interface system requirements:
Web Browser – Compatible web browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 6.0 or higher)
and Netscape Navigator (version 6.0 or higher).
Use your browser's default settings. JavaScript must be enabled.
Screen Resolution – 1024 x 768 pixels is the optimal resolution for most monitors and laptops. Lower
screen resolutions (such as 800 x 600 pixels) may cause the screens to exceed the width or height of
the screen. To verify screen resolution on a Windows system:
o Right click on your desktop
o Select Properties
o Click the Settings tab
o Adjust the Screen Resolution as needed
A unique default user account is assigned with user name root and password 1234. You can change the
default password once you are logged on.

3.1 IP Address
To log on to the device using a web browser, your workstation and the device should both be on the
same network segment. The default IP address of the gateway is 192.168.1.101.
For example, to configure the IP address under Windows XP:
1. In the Windows task bar, click on the Start button, and then click on Control Panel.
2. Double-click on the Network Connections icon.
3. In the LAN or High-Speed Internet window, right-click on the icon corresponding to your network
interface card (NIC) and select Properties. (Often this icon is labeled Local Area Connection.) The
Local Area Connection dialog box is displayed with a list of currently installed network items.
4. Ensure that the check box to the left of the item labeled Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is checked,
and click on Properties.
5. Write down the current IP Address and Subnet Mask in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties
dialog box. When you are done using the web interface, you will need to reconfigure your PC with
these values.
6. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, click in the radio button labeled “
Specify
an IP address” and type 192.168.1.x (where x is any number between 1 and 254, excluding 101)
in the IP Address field.
7. Type 255.255.255.0 in the Subnet Mask field.
8. Click on OK twice to confirm your changes, and close the Control Panel.
