Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stoptheengine,
disconnectthesparkplugwireandgroundagainst
theengineThoroughlyinspectthe machineforany
damage.Repairthedamagebeforestartingand
operating.
Disengageall clutchlevers(iffitted)and stopengine
beforeyouleavetheoperatingposition(behindthe
handles).Waituntilthetinescometoa complete
stopbeforeuncloggingthetines,makinganyadjust-
ments,or inspections.
Neverrunanengineindoorsorin a poorlyventilated
area.Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,an
odorlessanddeadlygas.
Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcancausea
burn.Donottouch.
Usecautionwhentillingnearfences,buildingsand
undergroundutilities.Rotatingtinescancause
propertydamageor personalinjury.
Donotoverloadmachinecapacitybyattemptingto
till soiltoodeepattoofastofa rate.
Ifthemachineshouldstartmakinganunusualnoise
or vibration,stoptheengine,disconnectthespark
plugwireand grounditagainsttheengine.Inspect
thoroughlyfordamage.Repairanydamagebefore
startingandoperating.

asnecessary.
Followthismanualforsafeloading,unloading,
transporting,andstorageofthis machine.
Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainerinside
wherethereisanopenflame,sparkorpilotlight
suchasa waterheater,furnace,clothesdryer,etc.

Final Clutch Adjustment
IMPORTANT:Servicetheenginewithoilandgasoline
beforecheckingthis adjustment.Refertotheseparate
enginemanualpackedwithyourtillerforproperfueland
engineoil recommendations.
Positionthetillersothefrontcounterweightisagainst
a solidobject,suchasawall.Withthegearselection
leverinNEUTRAL,starttheengine.Refertothe
separateenginemanual.
Standingontherightsideofthetiller,examinethebelt
(insidethebeltcover).It shouldnotbeturning.
_ ARNING:Donotputyourfingers under
the belt cover.
Ifthe belt turns without bail engaged,adjustby
unthreadingtheinternallythreadedtubeattheend
ofthecablea fewturnsclockwise(whenstandingin
operator'sposition)and thenretightenthenutagainst
thetube.
Now movethe shift leverto FORWARDposition.
Carefullyengagetheclutchbyliftingtheclutchcontrol
bailagainstthehandle.Thewheelsshouldspin.
If thewheelsdo notspinwiththeunitinforward,adjust
byunthreadingthetubeattheendofthecablea few
turnscounter-clockwise(whenstandinginoperator's
position)andthenretightenthenutagainstthetube.
Recheckbothadjustments,andreadjustasnecessary.
NOTE: A secondarycableadjustmentisavailableifyou
reachthepointthatadditionaladjustmentisneeded.
Removethe beltcoverand movethe hexnutsatthe
otherendofthecabletowardstheendofthecasing.
Thenreadjustthehexnutsatthehandle.
Tire Pressure
Thetireson yourunitmaybeover-inflatedforshipping
purposes.Reducethetirepressurebeforeoperating
theunit.Recommendedoperatingtirepressureis
approximately20 p.s.i.(checksidewalloftirefortire
manufacturer'srecommendedpressure).

Starting Engine
NOTE: Whenpushingtheunitwiththeengineoff,you
willheara ratchetingsound(gearnoise)whichisnormal.

or being started.
Placegearselectionleverin NEUTRAL.
PlacethethrottlecontrolleverinFASTpositionor
ifequipped,placetheenginespeedcontrolinthe
STARTposition.
MovechokelevertoCHOKEpositionor ifequipped,
pushprimertwo(2) orthree(3)times.Waitabouttwo
(2) secondsbetweeneachpush.
NOTE:A warmenginemaynotrequirechokingorpriming.
Standatsideoftiller.Graspthestarterhandleandpull
outslowly,untilitpullsslightlyharder.Letroperewind
slowly.
Pullstarterhandlerapidly.Donotallowhandleto snap
back.Allowitto rewindslowlywhilekeepinga firm
holdonthestarterhandle.
Repeatpreviousstepsuntilenginestarts.
Asenginewarmsup andbeginsto operateevenly,
movechokelevergraduallytoRUNposition.Ifengine
falters,returntochokeposition,thenslowlymoveto

To Stop Engine
MovethrottlecontroltoSTOPorOFFposition.
Disconnectsparkplugwireandgroundtoprevent
accidentallystartingwhileequipmentisunattended.
NOTE: Afterthefirsttenhoursofoperation,recheck
theclutchadjustment.Refertofinalclutchadjustmentin
AssemblyInstructions.
Setting The Depth
Tillingdepthiscontrolledbythedepthstakewhichcanbe
adjustedtofivedifferentsettings.Adjustthesideshields
asyouadjustthedepthstake.
_ ARNING: Becertainspark plug wire is
disconnected and groundedagainst the
engine when performinganyadjustments.
Whenusingthetillerforthefirsttime,usethesecond
adjustmentholefromthetop(1"oftillingdepth).See
Figure5-1.

duetonormalstretchand wearonthebelt.Adjustment
isneededifthetinesor wheelsseemtohesitatewhile
turning,buttheenginemaintainsthesamespeed.
Toadjustthetensionon thebelt, referto FinalClutch
AdjustmentinAssemblyInstructions.
Afterbelttensionhasbeenadjusted,if thebeltis
excessivelystretched,youmayneedtoadjusttheidler
pulleyrod.Thiscaneasilybechecked.
Withtheengineoffandtheclutchcontrolbaildisen-
gaged,shiftthegearselectionhandletoeachforward
mode.If theindicatorbrackettouchestheidlerpulley
rod(withtheclutchcontrolbaildisengaged),thenan
adjustmentisnecessary.
Disconnectandgroundoutsparkplugwireagainst
theengine.
Removethe beltcoverasdescribedunderBelt
Replacementin theMaintenancesection.
Removethe hairpinclipand springwasherfromthe
idlerpulleyrod.Referto Figure9.
Movetheidlerpulleyrodtothelowerholeintheidler
bracket.
Replacethespringwasherandhairpinclip.

thecoolingsystem(blowerhousingarea)cleanto

performanceandlife.Becertaintoremoveall dirtand
combustibledebrisfrommufflerarea.
Lubrication
Transmission
Thetransmissionispre-lubricatedandsealedatthe
factory.It requiresnocheckingunlessthetransmission
isdisassembled.Tofillwithgrease,laytherighthalfof
thetransmissionon its side,add22 ouncesofBenalene
920grease,and assembletheleft halfto it.Thisgrease
canbeobtainedatyournearestauthorizeddealerby
orderingpartnumber737-0300.
Clutch Handle
Lubricatethepivotpointontheclutchhandleandthe
cableatleastoncea seasonwithlightoil.Thecontrol
mustoperatefreelyinbothdirections.
Pivot Points
Lubricateall pivotpointsandlinkagesat leastoncea
seasonwithlightoil.
Tine Shafts
Removefineassembliesandlubricatethefineshaftsat
leastoncea season.
Cleaning Tine Area
Cleantheundersideofthefineshieldaftereachuse.
Thedirtwashesoffthetineseasierifrinsedoff im-
mediatelyinsteadofafterit dries.Alwaystoweldrythe
tillerafterwardsand applya lightcoatofoil orsiliconeto
preventrustingorwaterdamage.
IMPORTANT:Neverusea "pressurewasher"toclean
yourtiller.Watercanpenetratetightareasofthetillerand
itschaincaseandcauseseriousdamagetotheunit.
Belt Replacement
Yourtillerhasbeenengineeredwitha beltmadeofspecial
material(KevlarTensile)forlongerlifeandbetterperfor-
mance.Itshouldnotbereplacedwithanoff-the-shelfbelt.
Orderallbeltsthroughyouauthorizedservicedealer.
Disconnectandgroundthesparkplugwireagainstthe
engine.
Removethebeltcoverfromtheleftsideofthetillerby
removetwo torxscrewsfromthetopofbeltcover.See
Figure7-1.

thoroughly.Lubricatethetillerasdescribedinthe
lubricationinstructions.
Wedo notrecommendtheuseofpressurewashers
tocleanyourunit.Theymaycausedamageto
electriccomponents,spindles,pulleys,bearingsor
theengine.Theuseofpressurewasherswill result
in shortenedlifeand reduceserviceability.
Refertotheenginemanualforcorrectengine
storageinstructions.
Wipetineswithoiledragtopreventrust.
Storetillerin a clean,dryarea.Donotstorenextto
corrosivematerials,suchasfertilizer.
NOTE-Whenstoringanytypeofpowerequipmentinan
unventilatedormetalstorageshed,careshouldbetaken
torustprooftheequipment.Usingalightoilorsilicone,coat
theequipmentandespeciallyanysprings,bearings,and
cables.
