1. Outline
This guide describes how to convert the hard disk drive installed in the WJ-HDE300 from the P-ATA type to the S-ATA type.
2. Preparation
(1) Screwdriver
(2) Wrench for hexagonal nut (5.5m/m)
(3) S-ATA conversion kit (0E0A0028AA)

3. Replacement Procedure

• Before touching the HDD, eliminate static electricity accumulating in your body.
• Ensure that the HDD is protected against static charge by placing disks on a antistatic mat or a conductive bag during the conversion work.

(1) Remove two screws xing the front panel.
(2) Slide the front panel to the left.
(3) Pull the both sides of the front panel toward you.
(4) Disconnect the connector of the cable coming out of the front panel.

The HDDs should be installed in the correct positions in the
order as shown right. Do not skip a drive position or reverse
the order of the HDD positions. Incorrectly placed drives will
result in the recorder not recognizing the extension unit or the
drives.
HDD #1 slot : HDD1 HDD #2 slot : HDD2
HDD #3 slot : HDD3 HDD #4 slot : HDD4

(5) Remove six screws xing the metal plate and then remove
the metal plate.
(6) Disconnect four ATA cables and four HDD power cables
of all HDDs.
Note:
When disconnecting the ATA cables, pull the pull-ring
slowly and straightforward.
(7) Remove four screws xing the HDD mounting bracket,
pull out the bracket.

(8) Remove the screws (four pieces each) xing the HDDs,
the sleeves and dampers and then remove the HDDs.
(9) Remove 11 screws that x the top cover to the main unit,
and then remove the top cover.
(10) Disconnect two HDD fan connectors from the main board.
(11) Remove one screw each xing the HDD Fan Ass’y and
then remove the HDD Fan Ass’ys.

(12) Remove three screws xing the power distribution board, and remove the power distribution board.
Disconnect ve connectors from the power distribution board.
(13) Remove one hexagonal spacer (30 mm) from the main board.
(14) Remove four screws each xing the HDD mounting chas-
sis, and remove two HDD mounting chassis.
(15) Disconnect the ATA cables from the main board.
(16) Remove two angle xing screws from the removed power
distribution board, and insert the insulating plate, and x it
with the two screws.

(17) Remove ve screws xing the main board, and then x
the main board with six hexagonal spacers (7 mm).
(18) Fix the S-ATA board mounting angle to the hexagonal
spacers with ve additional screws.
(19) Fix one hexagonal spacer (22 mm) to the S-ATA board
mounting angle
.
(20) Insert two S-ATA boards into the ATA connectors on the
main board, and x them with two screws each.
Note:
Circled tapped holes on the S-ATA connector side are not
necessarily screwed.
(21) Attach eight cord clamps to the bottom of the main chassis
as shown right.

(22) Connect four power cables to the power distribution
board.
(23) Connect the S-ATA cables and power cables to the S-ATA board as shown below.
(24) Fix the power distribution board to the main unit with three screws (one at the top, and two at the rear), and connect the connector
CN100. Pass the red power cables for HDD1 and HDD2 through a clamp, pass the S-ATA cables for HDD1(red) through two clamps,
and fasten the red power cables with a cable tie as shown below. Fasten the white power cables and the S-ATA cables for HDD2(gray)
with a cable tie as shown below.

(25) Secure the S-ATA cables to the cord clamps as shown below.
Leave the red circled areas empty to install the HDD mounting chassis.
(26) Adjust the length of S-ATA cables and secure them as shown below.
(27) Fix two HDD mounting chassis to the main unit with four
screws each from the top and two screws at front. There
are four holes on the front but use top right and bottom
left. Other two holes are used in step (34).
Take care not to pinch the S-ATA cables.

(28) Fix two HDD fan assemblies with one screw each, and
connect each HDD fan connector to the main board.
(29) Attach the cord clamp to the HDD3, 4 fan assembly and
secure the HDD3, 4 S-ATA cables, as shown right.
(30) Install new HDDs on the HDD mounting brackets with four screws each. Refer to the "Operating Instructions" for detail.
Notes:
When disconnecting the ATA cables, pull the pull-ring slowly and straightforward.
S-ATA HDD's do not require jumper conguration.
Install the HDD, board side facing down and the connectors pointing toward the front.
Take care not to deform the dampers when installing the HDD.
(31) Install the HDD unit in the reverse order of the removal.

(32) Connect the S-ATA cables to the HDDs as shown right.
Make sure that the connectors have been inserted com-
pletely.
(33) Replace the SW label on the front chassis with a new one
as shown right.
(34) Fix the metal plate with six screws in the reverse order of
the removal.
(35) Install the top cover on the main unit with 11 screws.

(36) Connect the connector to the front panel and x the front panel with two screws in the reverse order of the removal.
(37) Attach the S-ATA label, large (for top) to the top panel.
Attach the S-ATA label, small (for front) to the front
panel.
Note:
The new HDDs need to be formatted before operation. Refer to the Operating Instructions for detail.
