Important Safety Information

Read and Understand this User Manual Before Use

Read this entire User Manual before using the BrightDrop Trace and

keep this manual for future reference. This User Manual contains

important safety, and operation information. This manual is intended

to remind you of your training, but the manual is not a substitute for

operator training. If you have any questions or do not understand

something, contact us at [email protected]m for assistance.

This manual is considered a part of the Trace and should accompany

the device if it is ever transferred or sold.

This manual is not intended as a comprehensive use, service, repair or maintenance manual.

Please contact your local BrightDrop authorized servicer for all service, repairs or maintenance

issues.

Safety Messages

To prevent serious injury or death:

•DO NOT operate the Trace unless you are trained and authorized by your employer.

•Read all safety warnings and all instructions before using the Trace. DO NOT remove any

labels from the Trace.

•Do not operate when you are tired, have emotional problems, or after consuming alcohol or

medicine especially with sleeping ingredient.

•DO NOT carry riders on or in the Trace.

•The Trace should be loaded, transported, and used in accordance with approved BrightDrop

products and services. Any other loading, transport, or use of the Trace will be at your own

risk and liability.

•Never modify your Trace in any way. Do not sand, drill, file or remove parts from your Trace.

Do not install incompatible components or hardware.

•PINCH POINT Hazard. Keep fingers, hair, clothing (including shoelaces), jewelry and other

objects away from wheels and other components.

•Please follow Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration guidance for cargo securement

and refer to relevant industry associations (e.g. Web Sling & Tie Down Association).

•Traces should be secured with a restraining system capable of handling at least 5,325 lb of

peak force. If using ratchet straps, ensure they can withstand at least 5,325 lb Break Strength

or 1,775 lb Working Load Limit (WLL) individually or in combination. The D.O.T. and Web Sling

Association require tie-down manufacturers to attach a tag to the strap with the safe Working

Load Limit and the information on WLL can be found there. For guidance follow Federal

Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) guidelines for cargo securement and refer to relevant

industry associations (e.g. Web Sling & Tie Down Association).

•When placing the Trace in vehicle for transportation, make sure the following steps are taken:

oEngage Caster Locks (if available) on the Trace.

oSecure Trace with secondary retention system in accordance with FMCSA Cargo

Securement Rules.

Personal Protective Equipment

ALWAYS wear safety shoes when operating the Trace. The user must avoid their

feet and those of any bystanders when operating the Trace.

Training

DO NOT operate the Trace unless you are trained and authorized by your employer. Ask your

supervisor or BrightDrop Contact Center at 888-987-4377 if there is anything unclear or if you

have concerns about the operation of the Trace.

The Trace was designed to work safely and efficiently with the Operator, but as the employer, you

have the primary responsibility for the well-being of your employees. Operator training and the

responsibility for providing a safe workplace is required by the Occupational Safety and Health

Act (OSHA). Both OSHA and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) provide operating,

maintenance and safety instructions contained in the following publications:

•29 CFR 1910.178: "OSHA Safety and Health Standards (29 CFR 1910)", "Subpart N-

Materials Handling and Storage", Section 1910.178 "Powered Industrial Truck". Available

from osha.gov.

•ANSI/ITSDF B56.1: "Safety Standard for Low Lift and High Lift Trucks" (Safety Code or

Powered Industrial Trucks). Published by: Industrial Truck Standards Development

Foundation, 1750 K Street NW, Suite 460, Washington DC 20009.

The ANSI Standard B56.1 requires operator qualification prior to selection based on visual,

auditory, physical, and mental ability relative to the specific requirements of the employer.

Similarly, the training required by OSHA and ANSI must be tailored to the workplace. Unique

operations can present hazards even to experienced Operators if the work is different. Train your

people about the unique design of the Trace.

Pre-Operation Safety Check

The Trace must be inspected every shift. Do not try to operate a Trace that needs repairs or try

to fix it yourself. Report all problems to your employer and tag the Trace as out of service.

1. Walk around the Trace and look for signs of damage or any slip hazards.

2. Check for damage to electrical cables and connectors.

3. Check for loose or missing items, nuts, bolts, fasteners, and rivets.

4. Power on and check buzzer.

5. Inspect all four (4) wheels and check the caster wheel locks are functional.

6. Check door locks are operating properly. Check doors open and close freely and inspect

the interior. Check shelves are secure (if installed).

7. Check batteries are fully or appropriately charged for anticipated use.

8. At the beginning of each shift, before operation, the operator shall power on and test for

correct brake function. Press brake release button, ensure the Trace moves. Disengage

brake release and ensure the Trace stops.

When Loading

Maximum Trace load is 200 lbs. (90 kg).

Maximum load for each shelf is 100 lbs. (45 kg).

Bottom floor panel maximum load is 200 lbs (90kg) if no shelf(s) present.

•ALWAYS place heavier items on the floor panel or lowest available shelf to prevent tipping

and to keep the center of gravity as low as possible.

•ALWAYS close and lock doors prior to moving the Trace.

•DO NOT propel the Trace while items are on top.

During Use

•Learn and follow your employer's safety rules for operation, traffic, and speed. Look where

the Trace is going to avoid people, obstructions, and drop-offs. Check clearances in all

directions. Travel in REVERSE (Pull) if the Trace blocks your view.

•When travelling up or down ramps or sloped areas, the Operator should always be on the

uphill side of the Trace and only travel straight up or down an inclined surface. Keep a safe

distance from platform and ramp edges.

•DO NOT turn, park or load/unload the Trace on slopes.

•The Trace can tip over even when empty. Slow down for turns; push/pull smoothly and

slowly. If it does start to tip, move to a safe location away from the Trace and sound buzzer or

shout to alert pedestrians in the area.

•AVOID collisions. Should pedestrians or other objects come into the path of the Trace, steer

to avoid them. Sound buzzer to alert people who may not be looking at you.

•Stop the Trace completely and sound the buzzer if necessary, at corners or at stop signs,

when approaching intersections or crosswalks, when exiting an aisle, or other locations where

the vision is limited or obstructed. Always proceed with caution. Use traffic mirrors, if

available.

•TO STOP – release throttle, confirm the Trace has stopped.

•ONLY park in authorized places. Turn the Trace OFF, set caster wheel locks and check doors

are locked.

•DO NOT carry riders on top or inside of the Trace.

•ONLY travel the Trace on paved or smooth level surfaces free of hazards. DO NOT use on

gravel, dirt, bumps, potholes, or other areas that do not have a finished surface like a

sidewalk, to prevent damage to the Trace or tipping over.

•ONLY operate in environments with adequate ambient light. Operating outside at night or in

areas with low light comes with more risks than operating during the day due to decreased

visibility.

•Others may have difficulty seeing you and you may not see obstacles in your path.

•DO NOT maneuver the Trace through standing water, heavy rain, or in areas with other

obstacles. Be aware of areas with uneven floors, stairs, or other obstacles present. DO NOT

park the Trace in standing water.

•When pushing/pulling the Trace up/down an inclined grade/ramp (under heavy load

conditions up to 200lbs. and/or steep inclines greater than 5 degrees/8.7% grade) be aware

a loss of motorized assist may occur when either:

oThe electric wheel motor thermal or overcurrent protections activate; OR

oThere is a low or a depleted battery pack State of Charge.

The user will have to push/pull/operate the Trace manually should either of these conditions

occur.

•ALWAYS remove the Trace from service if it falls from an elevated position or tips over. Have

the Trace serviced and inspected per the Service Manual before returning to service.

•PARK and TAG OUT the Trace if you experience any problems while you are working. Stop

work and tell your supervisor. Make sure to tag the Trace as out of service so others will not

be injured by trying to use it. If any issues are found during the Pre-Operation Safety Check,

get the issue fixed before start work or tag it out and use another Trace.

•BE AWARE that objects may not be easily seen in front of the Trace when driving or pushing

the Trace in front of you.

Intended Use

The Trace is a TYPE E industrial device. It is an electrically powered unit that has minimum

acceptable safeguards against inherent fire and electric shock hazards.

The intended use of the Trace is to be operated by an adult (age 18 and up) for transportation of

goods in an occupational setting. Only use on paved or finished surfaces and in areas where

permitted by law (not on roadways). Any other use of is prohibited and may result in SERIOUS

INJURY or DEATH.

Not following the instructions and warnings either in this manual or on the Trace itself could

result in death, serious injury, or property damage. Unauthorized modifications of the Trace

automatically void the Limited Warranty and may make the product unsafe for use.

If improper service is performed, including the use of replacement parts not provided by the

manufacturer, or in the event of any alterations to the Trace beyond the manufacturer’s

guidelines, in no event can the manufacturer be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental,

or special damages to property or persons, including death, arising out of the use or misuse of the

Trace.

On-Product Labels

The Trace is equipped with 9 individual vinyl labels and 1 aluminum serial plate. The operator

should understand and familiarize themselves with these labels before use.

Battery Pack Safety

Battery Pack Safety Messages

Risk of Fire and Electric Shock – No User Serviceable Parts.

To prevent serious injury or death:

•ONLY charge original Trace approved lithium-ion battery packs. The battery pack voltage

must match the battery charger voltage. DO NOT use the battery pack or charger for any

use other than its intended purpose.

•ONLY use the battery charger provided with the Trace or a BrightDrop approved

replacement.

•For any service regarding the battery, ensure the system power is turned OFF before

service begins.

•DO NOT expose to rain or allow any liquids on or inside the battery pack and charger. The

risk of electric shock and the potential for fire are increased should the charger or battery

pack be exposed to water or submerged in liquid of any kind.

•DO NOT charge the Trace outdoors or in wet environments.

•DO NOT remove or service the Trace battery pack without ensuring the system power is

turned OFF.

•DO NOT charge the Trace when ambient temperatures are below 32 oF (0oC) or higher

than 100 oF (38 oC). Do not charge in direct sunlight.

•ALWAYS inspect the battery charger and cords prior to each use. If dropped or damaged,

DO NOT use and discard immediately.

•If the battery pack is dropped, crushed and or dented, DO NOT use and contact

BrightDrop to order a replacement battery pack.

•The battery pack may emit smoke or gases if it becomes damaged or is used incorrectly.

Ensure the Trace is in a well-ventilated area. Respiratory tract irritation may occur and

users should seek medical attention if they experience any adverse effects. Do not allow

any others to approach the Trace. For assistance, please contact BrightDrop Customer

Support.

•Battery leakage may occur under extreme usage or temperature conditions. Avoid

contact with skin and eyes. Battery liquid is caustic and could cause chemical burns. If

battery liquid comes in contact with skin, wash quickly with soap and water. If the liquid

contacts your eyes, immediately flush eyes with water for several minutes and seek

medical attention.

•Battery charging times may increase with battery age and usage.

•Only grab the charger by the plug and not the cable when plugging and unplugging from

the wall.

•Do not puncture or crush the battery pack. Do not impact the battery pack or modify it in

any way. Do not use the battery pack if it shows visible damage. Danger of fire or

explosion.

•Do not place the charger near flammable materials. There is a risk of fire due to the heat

generated during charging.

•Keep the battery pack and charger away from children.

Battery Pack Charging

See Battery Pack Safety and Charging section for more information.

NOTE: If the battery pack charger is inside the Trace, the user will need to open the doors

manually to access the battery pack charger. Please see “To unlock doors manually” in

the Doors section.

First Time Use – Battery Connection

Battery will arrive disconnected, before first charging attempt, the battery must be connected. Please

ensure the charger is not connected to the Trace unit, caster wheels/brakes engaged to connect the

battery for first time use or any battery replacement.

Open battery compartment & connect battery.

1. Using a flat-head screwdriver, loosen the Battery Door Fastener by quarter-turn counterclockwise.

Note: the Battery Access Door is attached via tether and fastener.

2. After removing the Battery Access Panel, connect the battery to the internal connector.

3. Reinstall the Battery Access Panel by inserting the tab into the slot at the bottom and re-connecting

the quarter-turn Battery Door Fastener.

Battery Charging

The battery in the Trace unit can be charged in two different ways:

·Onboard the Trace and connected to the system (Referred to as Onboard Charging)

·Removed from the Trace and disconnected (Referred to as Offboard Charging)

For each method, a different cable will be used to connect the charger.

To Charge the Trace Battery:

1. Inspect the Trace Battery pack Charger.

ELECTRIC SHOCK Hazard. DO NOT charge battery pack if the housing or

cords show any sign of damage.

2. Ensure the area around the Trace is dry. It is not necessary to remove the battery pack

from the Trace for charging.

•DO NOT charge outdoors.

•Do not operate the charger on an easily ignited surface (e.g. paper,

textiles, etc.) or in a flammable environment. Risk of fire related to charger

temperature increasing during the charging process.

3. Prior to handling the battery charger, be sure to discharge static electricity by touching

the top side of your hand to any metal object not isolated from the ground (other than the

Trace).

4. Plug the charger into a 110V rated electrical outlet.

Before charging, inspect the outlet for any damage and ensure that the outlet is in good

working condition and is well grounded. It is not recommended to use extension cords,

power strips or other similar devices.

5. For onboard charging, locate the charge port on the Trace as indicated in Figure 2. Lift

the rubber port cover and connect the onboard charging cable plug to both the Trace and

the charger. Do ensure care to not touch the contacts on the Charger Plug, only handle

the plug by the plastic/insulated portion.

6. For offboard charging, refer to the section “First time use – Battery Connection” to access

the battery, disconnect and remove the battery from the battery compartment. Connect

the offboard charge cable to both the battery and to the charger.

7. Charger should charge the battery to 80-90% SoC within 4-5 hours.

8. Battery pack must be fully charged before the first use of the Trace. During charging, the

state of charge will be illuminated on the handlebar user interface, and on the BrightDrop

App.

To prevent damage to the battery pack, maintain a State of Charge above 30%, 3 bars on the

handlebar user interface.

Operation

Safe operation is the responsibility of the trained and authorized Trace user.

Should the Trace be traveling faster than intended take the following actions to prevent SERIOUS

INJURY or DEATH:

•Release the throttle;

•Use arms and body weight to manually control and steer;

•Press the main power button; and

•Press down firmly on both caster wheel locks to engage parking brake function.

Personal Protective Equipment

own feet and the feet of other pedestrians in the vicinity when operating the

Trace.

Handlebar User Interface

The Trace is classified as a TYPE E industrial device. It is an electrically powered unit that has

minimum acceptable safeguards against inherent fire and electric shock hazards.

Lock Status

Light will only illuminate when the doors are locked.

Forward Direction - PUSH

To choose direction of travel, press the arrow key corresponding to the desired

direction. To indicate that it was selected, the desired direction will be illuminated on

the control panel

Info Indicator Light

When the info indicator light is illuminated, check the BrightDrop App to get more

information on why the indicator is on. This can range from low battery to service

requirement.

Buzzer

When the Trace is switched on, the buzzer will sound when the buzzer button is pressed.

Reverse Direction - PULL

To choose direction of travel, press the arrow key corresponding to the desired

direction. To indicate that it was selected, the desired direction will be illuminated on

the control panel

Battery Charge Indicator

The state of charge of the Trace can be visualized in increments of 12.5%. Each LED

illuminated in the battery charge indicator corresponds to 12.5% battery life. At full

charge, all 8 LED’s will be illuminated green. At 12.5% percent charge, one red LED will

be illuminated.

Main Power Button

When this button is pressed, it will illuminate to indicate the Trace motorized assist

system is receiving power from the battery pack. This is a toggle switch and will latch

when pressed. Press a second time to unlatch the switch.

Door Open Button

This button will appear illuminated when the doors are unlocked and can be opened.

Press this button to open the doors

Brake Release Button

When depressed, the brake release button will allow the Trace to move freely without

propulsion. With freewheeling engaged the Trace will not go above a set speed. Both the

forward and reverse arrows will blink indicating the Trace is in free-wheel mode. Brake is

only used as parking brake; the motor uses regenerative braking to help slow down before

the brake is engaged

Throttle Lever (Figure 5)

The throttle lever allows the operator to control the speed of the propulsion. The

further the lever is pulled, the faster the Trace will go. Regardless of the side that is

pulled, the Trace will always travel in the direction indicated by the forward/reverse

buttons. Brake automatically engages when the throttle is released.

How to Unlock Doors

1. To unlock the doors using the BrightDrop App*:

a. Login to the app with Bluetooth turned on and navigate to thenearby assets view by

pressing the nearby icon at the bottom.

b. On the nearby assets page, find the appropriate Trace on the list of available devices.

c. Press theUnlock button in the app. The Door Open button on the Trace will illuminate and

the blue Lock icon will turn off.

d. Press theDoor Open button on the Trace’s user interface to open the doors of the Trace

unit.

e. Note: TheDoor Open button will blink until the doors are shut completely

2. To unlock the doors manually

User shall always carry the Latch Unlock Tools to manually open the doors in case of depleted

battery pack or if the BrightDrop App does not unlock the doors. The user must unlock both the

top and the bottom latches to open the doors. Reference the service manual, print out included

during delivery or call the BrightDrop contact center at 888-987-4377 or email

[email protected].

ONLY after both the top and the bottom latches have been unlocked, you may open the doors.

DO NOT force the doors open or closed or the doors may be damaged.

3. To lock the doors

a. ALWAYS close the left side door first, then close the right side door.

b. Make sure both doors are closed properly to engage both the top and bottom latches on

the right side door.

c. By default, the Trace doors will automatically return to LOCK status 10 seconds after the

doors are fully closed; OR

To manually lock the Trace doors, press the ‘Lock’ button in the BrightDrop App or on the

handlebar user interface. Note: Lock timeout can be adjusted in the BrightDrop fleet

portal. If configured with auto lock, doors that do not have both top and bottom latches

properly engaged, will NOT auto lock. Refer to your fleet manager for settings assigned to

individual Trace units.

Caster Brakes

To prevent motion of the trace, caster wheels are equipped with manual brakes.

NOTE: The caster brake pedals are only accessible when exposed from under the

Trace chassis. If you cannot see the caster brake pedals, pull the Trace towards you 6-

12 inches using the handle. This should allow the casters to swivel and allow the user

to see and to press the caster brake.

The caster wheels are the two wheels located closest to the Handlebar User Interface

To lock: Press down on the “ON” part of the pedal attached to each wheel (Figure 6).

To unlock: Press down on the “OFF” part of the pedal attached to each wheel (Figure 7).

Shelves

Maximum rated shelf load is 100 lbs. (45 kg).

To prevent serious injury or death:

•ONLY put a load on a shelf if it is properly seated in the mounting brackets. DO

NOT use Trace shelves for any other purpose.

•DO NOT put a load on a shelf if it is damaged or missing the rubber end sleeves.

•DO NOT store unused shelves on top of the Trace during operation.

For maintenance or service issues, refer to the Service Manual.

Four (4) shelf positions are available as shown in Figure 8.

Reposition shelves (Figure 9):

1. Pull the shelf towards you (out of the Trace) to unseat the front and back brackets from the

Trace frame.

2. Reposition shelf to the desired location, lining up the back and front brackets in the Trace

frame.

3. Push the shelf away from you (into the Trace) to snap into the rear brackets and seat in the

front brackets.

BrightDrop App

The BrightDrop App allows the user to connect to the Trace being used to lock and unlock the

doors, track location, select throttle profile and, and track state of charge, among other features

that may be available.

Connecting to the Trace

1. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on mobile device.

2. Ensure Trace has a charge.

3. Open BrightDrop App on mobile device.

4. Select “Nearby Assets”

5. Identify which Trace you want to connect to

6. Select the “Tag” icon next to the Trace

7. Verify if there is a successful connection icon

Tracking Location

1. Navigate to Asset page

2. Tap “view map” to see latest location. The latest known address is also listed.

Turning the Trace OFF

1. Press main power button

2. Press the parking brakes on the two (2) caster wheels (see Figure 15 and 16).

3. Ensure that both doors are closed and locked.

frequency that complies with Part 15/Part 18 of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

rules and with Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada's license-exempt

RSS(s) / RSP-100 / ICESGEN.

Operation is subject to the following two conditions:

1. The device may not cause harmful interference.

2. The device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause

undesired operation of the device.

Changes or modifications to any of these systems by other than an authorized service facility

could void the warranty and authorization to use this equipment.

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device,

pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection

against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can

radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions,

may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that

interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful

interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment

off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the

following measures:

•Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.

•Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.

•Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver

is connected.

•Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.

This equipment complies with radio frequency exposure limits set forth by the FCC for an

uncontrolled environment.

This equipment should be installed and operated with a minimum distance of 5mm between the

device and the user or bystanders.

This device must not be co-located or operating in conjunction with any other antenna or

transmitter.

Trace End of Subscription - Disposal

If your Trace is made available to you on a subscription basis, please contact your BrightDrop

coordinator for Return Inspection at the End of Subscription period.

Disposal of any product owned by BrightDrop is not permitted unless directed and

authorized by BrightDrop. The motors, display, accessories, and packaging should

be disposed of in accordance with local and national regulations. Regulations

regarding electronics disposal vary so it is important to follow local rules. Certain

parts will be requested returned to BrightDrop for analysis if any repairs are made.

DO NOT dispose of Trace and its components with household waste.

Battery Pack Recycling

When your battery is no longer usable, call the BrightDrop contact center at 888-987-4377 or

email support@gobrightdrop.com. If instructed to dispose, dispose according to local and

national regulations. Regulations regarding battery disposal vary so it is important you find

out the rules in your location. Lithium Iron batteries cannot be put in with normal garbage.

Troubleshooting

If you are experiencing any issues with the Trace, first check to see if the info indicator light is

illuminated. If so, refer to BrightDrop App for diagnostic trouble codes and next steps to resolve issue.
