TERRA TECHNOLOGY & DESIGN
Terra Custom Application loudspeakers use innovative technologies to combine the dynamics of
traditional box speakers with the aesthetic advantages and placement flexibility of in-wall architec-
tural speakers. Terra CA Series speakers sound refreshingly clear and open, and exhibit little sign
of strain at high output levels. You can listen to them for hours on end without the slightest bit of
fatigue. Unlike most in-wall or in-ceiling speakers, the CA Series are weather resistant, allowing for
use on boats, outdoor walls, or in wet indoor locations.
ALL CLIMATE DESIGN
ACAD driver is immune to harsh environments • MFCS eliminates spider degradation and improves
linearity • Cation-plated magnet resists corrosion • Aluminum and stainless steel hardware
• Integral mounting tabs • Paintable frame and grille
ACAD: Anodized-Ceramic Aluminum Diaphragm
One of the founding principles of Terra is that metal is the best choice for a speaker cone. Terra’s
proprietary anodizing method strengthens the aluminum cone and also damps it to minimize vibra-
tion. The result is a cone that’s as light and rigid as possible – two qualities essential for producing
great sound. And unlike ordinary cone materials, ACAD is immune to harsh outdoor environments
and won’t degrade over time.
Greater Clarity
- unmasks the details that distinguish truly musical sound
Purer Sound
- rigid, lightweight cone minimizes distortion, plays loud without harshness
Better Dynamics
- reproduces musical dynamics without strain
More Listenable
- smooth, non-strident sound eliminates listener fatigue
More Reliable
- seamless, one-piece cones will not deteriorate or change characteristics with age
MFCS: Magnetic Fluid Centering System
In a conventional loudspeaker the “spider” – typically a pleated fabric – acts like a spring to return
the voice coil (and the cone) back to its starting position, centered within the magnet’s gap. The
Terra bass driver does away with the spider entirely, instead using a special magnetic fluid in the
gap. This fluid provides the restoring force – in the form of magnetic attraction – needed to guide
the voice coil and keep it centered within the gap. Particularly at high output levels, the greater
precision of the MFCS reduces nonlinearity and also permits longer cone excursion for greater out-
put. And unlike a traditional spider – which is a mechanical device the Terra MFCS is immune to
harsh outdoor environments and won’t degrade over time. In addition, the magnetic fluid acts as a
heat sink for the voice coil, which helps increase power handling by cooling the voice coil so it can
handle more current.
Extended Bass
- longer cone excursion maximizes bass output
Less Distortion
- voice coil is constantly centered, even at the loudest levels
Better Dynamics
- absence of mechanical resistance speeds transient response
Greater Linearity
- linear damping forces ensure consistent response
More Reliable
- no mechanical parts to deteriorate or fail with age
Cation-Plated Magnet
The magnet in the CA Series is cation-plated, an electroplating process that creates an anti-cor-
rosive protective layer at the molecular level. This allows the CA to be used outdoors, including in
tough marine environments like boats.

ADVISORY
The Terra CA Series loudspeakers are designed for installation in walls or ceilings. If
you are not
completely comfortable
completely comfortable
with cutting holes in your walls and fishing speaker
wires through your walls, please hire a professional audio/video contractor. The follow-
ing instructions assume that you are installing into existing wallboard.
AMPLIFIER POWER
Speaker damage most commonly results from UNDERPOWERING the speaker. If you
hear distortion from the speaker, chances are that the amplifier has exceeded its output
capability and is “clipping.” If you hear distortion at loud levels, turn down your amp
immediately! Clipping WILL cause damage to a speaker, and such damage is not cov-
ered under the warranty.
THE “BREAK-IN” PERIOD
You may play your Terra speakers immediately with excellent results. However, subtle
improvement can be expected as the ACAD™ drivers break in after 50 to 100 hours
of operation.
PAINTING
The speaker frame and the grille can be painted with a thin coat of spray paint.
Use a thin, flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry up the grille from all sides until you
can grasp it for removal. Take care not to damage the frame as you pry.
Applying too much paint to the grille can plug the holes.
Mask the speaker assembly so only its frame gets painted.
Allow paint to dry thoroughly before handling the speaker.
SPEAKER LOCATION
The diagram below provides placement guidelines for installation in walls. For ceiling
installations the spacing between speakers and from corners is the same.

STEP 1: MARK SPEAKER LOCATIONS
Speakers should be placed between studs, which are typically spaced 16" apart. (If you
are not sure about the location of the studs, purchase an inexpensive “stud finder,a
magnetic device that indicates stud position by detecting nails.) Try to locate the speak-
ers at least 18" from corners.
Be careful not to locate the speakers too close to electrical switches, outlets, phone
jacks, and ceiling fixtures so as to avoid cutting into their wiring.
Using a level, mark a straight line on the wall or ceiling to denote the bottom edge of
each speaker. Using the supplied cardboard template that is part of this package, trace
the outline of the speaker cutout using the lines you’ve drawn as a reference.
STEP 2: CUT THE HOLES
You will need a utility knife or small saw, and a drill with a 1/4- to 1/2-inch-diameter
bit. Drill holes on the inside corners of the outlines you’ve traced. These holes make it
easier to begin cutting or sawing. Then cut or saw exactly along the paths you’ve traced.
Remove the pieces you’ve cut as well as any insulation that will impede installation.
STEP 3: RUN THE SPEAKER WIRING
Use at least 16-gauge wire. For long runs (100 feet or more) we recommend thicker
14-gauge wire. Run the wiring to the connection point. Leave at least 12 inches at the
cutout for connecting each speaker.
STEP 4: CONNECT THE SPEAKER WIRES
Solder the wire leads to the positive (red) and negative terminals on the speakers. Note
that the R2, S2 and WF models also provide spring clip terminals.
STEP 5: INSTALL THE SPEAKERS (SEE DIAGRAMS BELOW)
Remove the grille to gain access to the mounting screws. Make sure the clamping tabs
on the back of the speaker are in a vertical position, then tilt the speaker assembly
slightly to work it into the hole. DO NOT TIGHTEN THE SCREWS YET.
Tighten the front-panel screws while making sure each speaker is positioned squarely.
TIGHTEN ONLY UNTIL YOU FEEL SOME RESISTANCE. The clamping tabs will rotate into
position and draw the frame in against the wallboard, securing the speaker in place. The
speaker frame is flexible, so it will conform to slight variations in the flatness of the wall.
DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN or you may damage the frame.
STEP 6: RE-ATTACH THE GRILLES
Gently press around the perimeter of the grille to work it back into the frame.
