The lightning flash with an arrowhead symbol, within an equilateral triangle, is intended to
alert the user to the presence of un-insulated "dangerous voltage" within the product's
enclosure that may be of sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electric shock to a
person.
The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the
presence of important operating, maintenance and servicing instructions in the literature
accompanying the appliance.
Dripping warning: "This product shall not be exposed to any dripping or splashing, and no
objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on or near the product."
Ventilation warning: "The normal ventilation of the product shall not be impeded for intended
use." (Minimum distances must be kept around the apparatus for sufficient ventilation, especially
while use of the apparatus is in tropical and/or moderate climates.)
Dispose of old batteries safely. Do not throw them into a fire.

14. OBJECT and LIQUID ENTRY - Care should be taken so that objects do not fall and liquids are
not spilled into the device’s openings.

combination should be moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and
uneven surfaces may cause the appliance and cart combination to overturn.

18. SERVICING - The user should not attempt to service the appliance beyond that described in
the user's operating instructions. All other servicing should be referred to qualified service
professional.
19. OUTDOOR ANTENNA GROUNDING - If an outside antenna is connected to the receiver, be
sure that the antenna system is grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage
surges and built up static charges.

Code, ANS/NFPA No. 70-1984
provides information with respect to
proper grounding of the mast and
supporting structure, grounding of the
lead-in wire to an antenna discharge
unit, size of grounding conductors,
location of antenna discharge unit,
connection to grounding electrodes,
and requirements for the grounding
electrode.
20. PROTECTIVE ATTACHMENT PLUG - The appliance is equipped with an attachment plug
that has an overload protection. This is a safety feature. If replacement of the plug is
required, be sure the service technician has used a replacement plug specified by the
manufacturer that has the same overload protection as the original plug. (UK Version Only)

DVD discs are divided into titles, and the titles are subdivided into chapter.

REMOTE CONTROL BATTERY INSTALLATION
Before starting to operate the remote control, please pull out the
insulation plate from the battery compartment.
1. Pull out the battery holder as shown right.
2. Place one battery (CR 2025) as shown right. Make sure that
the polarity (+/–) of battery matches the marks inside the
unit.
3. Insert the battery holder into its compartment as shown right.
Note: Do not attempt to recharge, short-circuit, disassembly,
heat or throw the batteries into the fire.
RECHARGEABLE BATTERY INSTALLATION
The rechargeable battery pack is included in the package as separately packed.
1. Loading the rechargeable battery
Unpack the rechargeable battery.
Insert it into the slot at the back of the main unit as
shown left. If properly inserted, you will hear the
“CLICK!” sound.
Note: For the first time use, please charge the battery
fully first before use. It will take approximately 3 hours
to fully charge it.
2. Loading the rechargeable battery
Push and hold the lock button down at the back of
the main unit as shown right.
Push the installed battery back to release.
USING THE AC ADAPTER
1. Insert the DC plug at the end of the adapter cord
into the DC ‘IN’ jack at the right side of the player.
2. Plug the other end into an AC wall outlet.
Notes:
Only use with the supplied AC adapter. Using with
another AC adapter could cause damage.
Remove both the DC plug and AC plug to
disconnect the AC adapter when not necessary.

CHARGING THE BATTERY
After loading the battery, refer to the “Using the AC Adapter” section in this manual to connect to
the power converter.
Notes:
When using the Ni-MH rechargeable battery, please note that you must FULLY CHARGE
THE BATTERY. If not done so, the discharging time will be short.
The battery will be operated normally with normal capacity after 4~5 times of charging and
discharging. It is not a defect or abnormal battery.
After a period of storage, or non-usage for an extended period of time, the device will require
users to repeat the above mentioned steps to get the battery back to normal condition.
The battery is fully charged for approximately 3 hours after the AC adaptor is connected.
While the battery is charging the CHARGE indicator at the front will light up RED. And when
charging is completed, the FULL indicator will light up GREEN.
Notes:
Disconnect the AC adapter plugs from both the player and the AC outlet, when charging is
completed or not necessary.
The battery recharge circuit operates on both power ON and OFF mode. Switch the unit OFF
for battery quick recharge.
When battery is fully charged and released from unit, the CHARGE indicator will light up RED.
It then means the charge circuit is ON.
BATTERY LOW INDICATION
When using the rechargeable battery to play and the battery is nearly exhausted, a
“STANDBY” indicator in the front of the player will begin blinking. After some time,
the power will turn OFF automatically. Refer to “Charging the Battery” to recharge
the battery.

CONNECTING THE AC ADAPTER OR CIGARETTE LIGHTER ADAPTER
Connect the DC plug at the end of the AC adapter cord, or connect the cigarette lighter adapter
into the DC IN jack at the side of the unit. Plug the other end into the cigarette lighter socket or
into the power outlet.
SYSTEM CONNECTION
Use the audio cable (Red / White) and video cable (Yellow) to connect from the DVD player to a
TV set and an amplifier.
CONNECTING THE DVD PLAYER TO A TV SET BY AV
CABLE
Use the audio cable (Red / White), video cable (Yellow) to
connect the Player and TV set.
CONNECTING THE DVD PLAYER TO STEREO RECEIVER
BY COAXIAL OUTPUT
Use audio cable with 3.5mm stereo plug to unit, and next end
with white color RCA plug to connect stereo receiver with
coaxial digital in jack.
CONNECTING OTHER MEDIA TO THE DVD PLAYER
Use the audio cable (Red / White), video cable (Yellow) to
connect from other media to the DVD player.
Note: Slide the Line Select switch to “IN“.
Notes for Cable Connections:
Audio Cable (one end with 3.5mm stereo headphone
plug, and two ends with Red / White RCA plug).
Video Cable (one end with 3.5mm stereo headphone
plug, and one end with Yellow RCA plug).
Coaxial output (one end with 3.5mm stereo headphone
plug, and one end with White RCA plug).
Turn the power OFF and keep the DC cord pulled out from the adapter when connecting to the
system!

PLAYING DVD / VCD / AUDIO CD
1. To power the unit ON, slide the POWER switch to the left, and then the unit will turn ON.
Note:
To see the movie on the LCD screen of JD-VD742, the LINE SELECT IN/OUT switch
must be at the ‘OUT’ position. If not, slide the LINE SELECT IN/OUT switch to the ‘OUT’
position.
2. Press the DOOR OPEN button to open up
the disc compartment door. The ‘OPEN’
indication will appear on the LCD screen.
3. Place the disc with the label side facing front
on the disc tray. Hold the disc without
touching either of its surfaces, placing the
printed title side facing up.
4. Push down the left front edge on the door to
close and secure. The disc will start playback
automatically.
Note:
Loading the disc in any source mode will
switch from the current mode to DISC
mode.
For MP3 disc, the disc reading time may
exceed a little bit longer, due to the large number of songs complied into one disc.
NOTE: If playing an MP3 Disc, MENU will appear on the LCD screen:
Use the navigation buttons (///) to select the desired item.
Press the ENTER button, and playback of the selected item will start.
5. Adjust the Volume knob to a comfortable level.
Note: When in Play mode and the “STANDBY” indicator is blinking, it signifies the battery is
nearly exhausted and must be recharged.

OPERATIONAL INSTRUCTIONS
RESUME FUNCTION
1. Press the STOP button once to stop play. The screen will show "Press Play Key To
Continue".
2. Press the PLAY button, the play will start automatically from the point where you stopped
(resuming playback). Note that some discs may not resume automatic playback.
3. If the STOP button is pressed twice, the screen shows STOP. Then, the player will stop
completely.
KEY-LOCK FUNCTION
1. Press the KEY LOCK button to lock the key. The “Key Lock On” indication appears on the
LCD screen, and the function keys on the main unit will be disabled with the exception of the
power button.
2. Press the KEY LOCK button again to make all buttons function again.
SKIP FUNCTION
Press or to skip to the previous or next chapter (DVD) or track (CD)
SLOW-MOTION FUNCTION
Press this button to select slow-motion forward or rewind playback at 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16
without sound.
Note: This player does not support slow-motion playback for audio CD, and slow-
motion rewind (SLOW/R) does not support playback for the VCD disc. The indication
shown right will appear on the LCD screen when it doesn’t support the slow-motion
function.
PAUSE/STEP FUNCTION
1. Press button once to pause the picture.
2. Press the PAUSE/STEP button to play the DVD one frame at a time.
SEARCH FUNCTION
1. The () and () button allows searching forward / backward with the speed up to 16 times
faster than the normal speed. Each press of the search button will change the speed as
follows: x2 / x4 / x8 / x16
2. Press the PLAY button to resume the normal playback.

CHAPTER SEARCH FUNCTION
Use this feature to directly go to a specific title and/or chapter.
1. Press the SEARCH button once.
2. Use the numeric buttons to input the desired chapter number.
TITLE TIME SEARCH FUNCTION
Use this feature to directly go to a specific title time.
1. Press the SEARCH button twice.
2. Use the numeric buttons to select the desired time.
Notes: If the search function is attempted during the play mode, you can only go to a specific
chapter or time. You cannot change the title number. If you enter a time that exceeds the time
limit of DVD, “INPUT INVALID” will appear on the LCD screen. When playing VCD, the numeric
buttons only can be used to select the desired track or time in the search mode.
REPEAT FUNCTION
1. DVD Disc
While in the Playback mode, press the REPEAT button once; “
CHAPTER” will appear
briefly on the LCD screen and the currently playing chapter will repeat continuously.
While in the Playback mode, press the REPEAT button a second time; “
TITLE” will
appear briefly on the LCD screen and the current playing title will repeat continuously.
Press the REPEAT button once more to cancel the REPEAT mode.
2. Audio CD / VCD Disc
To repeat a track, simply select the track as described on the previous page, and then
press the REPEAT button once; “
TRACK” will appear on the LCD screen and the unit
will repeat the selected track continuously until the STOP button is pressed.
To repeat play all tracks on a CD, press the REPEAT button a second time; “
ALL” will
appear on the LCD screen, and the unit will repeat the CD continuously until the STOP

OPERATIONAL INSTRUCTIONS
A-B REPEAT FUNCTION
This player can repeatedly play back a specific section.
1. While in the play mode, press the ‘A-B’ button to define where you want the section to start.
2. Press the ‘A-B’ button again to define where you would like the section to end, and the unit
will then play the selected area continuously.
3. To cancel the A-B repeat mode, press the ‘A-B’ button again until the icon disappears on the
screen.
RANDOM FUNCTION
1. Press the RANDOM button once and “RANDOM” will appear on the LCD screen.
2. Press the PLAY button and the unit will play all the tracks back in random order. After all
tracks have been randomly played, the unit will automatically stop playing and enter into the
STOP mode.
3. To cancel the random function, press the RANDOM button a second time. “OFF” will be
shown on the LCD screen.
Note: When playing audio CD, MP3 CD or other audio media discs, you can press the “SCREEN
ON/OFF” button to turn off the LCD screen temporarily. This will save more power when using
rechargeable battery for playing.
PROGRAMMED PLAYBACK (DVD/CD/VCD)
You can program 20 different tracks or you can also program certain tracks to play more than
once.
1. Press the PROGRAM button. The program window will appear on the screen.
2. Press the numeric buttons to input 2 numbers for each track: one for title and the other for
chapter. After inputting 2 numbers, the cursor will automatically jump to the next program
track, awaiting the input of the next numbers.
3. Repeat step 2 until all the desired titles and chapters have been programmed (up to 20). You
can repeat a title and a chapter more than once if desired.
4. Use the navigation buttons to select the “START” position and press the PLAY button to
begin the programmed play.
5. To cancel the Program function, press the STOP button twice, or press the DOOR OPEN
button.

AUDIO FEATURE
For DVD, Pressing the AUDIO MENU button will allow you to change the audio language from
the one selected at the initial settings to a different language, if available. This feature is not
available on all discs. For audio CD and VCD, pressing the AUDIO MODE button will change the
audio mode as follows: MONO LEFT / MONO RIGHT / MIX MONO / STEREO
MENU FEATURE
Press the DVD MENU button, and the main menu of the DVD disc will appear. Use the navigation
buttons to select the desired option, and then press the ENTER button to confirm. Some discs
may not support this feature.
SUBTITLE FEATURE
Press the SUBTITLE button to select a subtitle language. To turn off the subtitle, press the
SUBTITLE button repeatedly. This feature is not available on all discs.
TITLE MENU FEATURE
Press the TITLE MENU button. The title menu of the disc will appear on the screen. Use the
navigator buttons to select the desired option, and then press the ENTER button to confirm. This
feature is not available on all discs.
3D SOUND
During playback of a disc, press the 3D button repeatedly to change the sound mode as follows:
ROCK Ö POP Ö LIVE Ö DANCE Ö TECHNO Ö CLASSIC Ö SOFT Ö OFF Ö ROCK
MUTE FUNCTION
Press the MUTE button once to mute the sound. “MUTE” will appear on the LCD screen. Press
the MUTE button again to restore the sound.
BOOKMARK FEATURE
Storing bookmarks in the memory to be viewed is similar to marking your page in a book. You
can quickly go to any point on the disc.
1. To program bookmarks
Press the BOOKMARK button during playback until it appears on the screen.
Use the navigation buttons to go to the empty bookmark space.
Press the PLAY button to mark the desired section.
Repeat steps 1 through 3 to program remaining bookmarks.
Press the BOOKMARK button to exit the bookmark window.

2. To play programmed bookmarks:
Press the BOOKMARK button to enter the bookmark section.
Use the navigation buttons to go to your desired bookmark position, and then press the
PLAY button to confirm. The playing time will display on the screen.
Repeat steps 1 through 2 to play other bookmarked positions.
3. To clear bookmarks:
In the bookmark section, press the CLEAR button to erase the old bookmark marking.
Exit the bookmark by pressing the BOOKMARK button, or open the disc compartment
cover to clear all programmed bookmarks.
Note: Some discs may not accept the Bookmark function. 12 bookmarks can be memorized for
each disc.
ZOOM FUNCTION
This player can magnify a picture. Press the ZOOM button to zoom during normal, slow or still
playback mode. Use the navigation buttons to select the desired part of the zoomed picture.
Note: This function only works with DVD and VCD discs.
VIEWING FROM A DIFFERENT CAMERA ANGLE (MULTI-ANGLE)
Some DVD discs may contain scenes which have been shot simultaneously from a number of
different camera angles. This function depends on a disc.
1. Play a DVD disc that is recorded with multiple angles.
2. Press the ANGLE button. If the disc contains different angled views, it will show the movie
with the different angle.
3. To return the normal angled view, press the ANGLE button until the camera icon disappears.
DISPLAY FEATURE
Press the DISPLAY button to show the elapsed and remaining time of the playing disc. Each time
the DISPLAY button is pressed, the time will change on the screen as follows:
DVD: Title Elapsed Ö Title Remain Ö Chapter Elapsed Ö Chapter Remain Ö Display Off
VCD & CD: Single Elapsed Ö Single Remain Ö Total Elapsed Ö Total Remain Ö Display Off
MP3 CD: Single Elapsed Ö Single Remain
PBC (PLAYBACK CONTROL) FUNCTION (VCD2.0 ONLY)
When playing a VCD with PBC function, you can enjoy simple interactive software on the TV
screen. By turning on this function, desired tracks can be selected by pressing the numeric
buttons. This feature is enabled only when a VCD2.0 disc supports the PBC feature. After
selecting a track, press the ENTER button to start playing the selected track.
