1 Introduction
The MPC8309KIT helps user in quickly getting familiar
with external connection and making the MPC8309KIT
setup. It has a two-board system: one processor board, also
called SOM, featuring the PowerQUICC processor,
MPC8309, and memory interfaces and the other a carrier
card that consists of external world interfaces terminated on
connector/header.

2 MPC8309 SOM—Major Connectors’ Details
The following two figures show the major connectors of the MPC8309 SOM card.

External Cable Connection for SOM Stand-alone
This figure shows the Jumper settings on Header J3 for either NOR boot mode or NAND boot mode.
Figure 3. NOR & NAND Boot Mode Jumper Settings
This figure shows the mounting options for configuring KA2 into RUN mode and PROGRAM mode.
Figure 4. Run and Program Mode Mounting Options
DPR
This three-pad components’ footprint provide options to mount/short link jumper on two adjacent pads.
You can select one of the two options by connecting two pads. Ensure that both the DPRs are configured
for the same option.
Before powering on the board, note the following:
The on-board KA2 microcontroller is already flashed with the microcontroller reset program; thus,
the microcontroller programming switch (if reworked on board) must be in “off” position (that is,
the notch of the connector must not be towards “DOT”).
3 External Cable Connection for SOM Stand-alone
Make the following external cable connection to start using the SOM card in stand-alone mode:
5 V DC power adapter
CAT5 cable for the network connectivity
UART connection for the debug console with the PC

External Cable Connection for SOM Stand-alone
This figure shows the external cable connectivity with MPC8309 SOM card.
Figure 5. External Cable Connection for SOM Stand-alone
NOTE
All necessary cables required are sent along with the MPC8309KIT.
Note that there is no need to connect external 5 V power supply and UART cable when the SOM card is
being used with the carrier card. Refer to Section 3, “External Cable Connection for SOM Stand-alone,”
for the external cable connection for MPC8309KIT.

Major Connectors of the Carrier Card
4 Major Connectors of the Carrier Card
This figure shows the major connectors on carrier card applicable for MPC830x SOM.
Figure 6. Major Connectors of Carrier Card for MPC830x SOM
Note the following before powering on the board:
1. Plug MPC8309 SOM on carrier card
2. Connect 12 V power adaptor to power jack
NOTE
DC-5Vin power adaptor should be disconnected from SOM before plugging
SOM on carrier card.
5 External Cable Connection for MPC8309KIT
Make the following external cable connections to start using the MPC8309KIT:
12 V DC power adapter
Ethernet cable on Carrier/SOM card for Ethernet connectivity
UART connection for the debug console with the PC
USB device can be connected to mentioned connector (optional)
RJ-11 and T1/E1 connectivity to be given through mentioned connector (optional)

External Cable Connection for MPC8309KIT
This figure shows the external cable connectivity with MPC8309KIT (SOM + Carrier) card.
Figure 7. External Connection for MPC8309KIT Card
NOTE
Ethernet connection on either SOM or carrier is enough for MPC8309
connectivity to external world.
Ethernet connection on SOM is done through FEC1 and on carrier through FEC2 and FEC3 of MPC8309.
Other ports of switch downlink can be used for connecting more than one system/Network to MPC8309
SOM.
Insert SOM card properly on carrier card. Improper insertion of SOM card can result in Ethernet
connectivity issue on FEC2 and FEC3. USB device, T1/E1 connection, RJ11 and Ethernet cable
connection to carrier card is optional. These external connections can be done on need basis.

PCI Card Insertion
6 PCI Card Insertion
MPC8309KIT supports PCI interface. PCI interface on SOM is terminated in miniPCI and PCI connector.
3.3 V PCI card is only supported on carrier card. Plug PCI card, as shown in the following figure.
Figure 8. External Connection for PCI Add-on Card for Carrier Card
NOTE
Insert PCI card so that PCI card notch comes towards RJ-45/DB9 connector
as shown in figure.
CAUTION
Wrong insertion of PCI card may damage the PCI card and/or MPC8309KIT.
