INSTALLATION AND OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
The FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-TX and FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-RX operate as a transmitter / receiver pair for the
transmission of eight baseband NTSC or PAL video signals, with two channels of bi-directional RS422
or RS485 data over a single multimode or single-mode fiber.
The FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-TX converts eight video inputs, and two data inputs to an optical fiber output.
The FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-TX also converts an optical fiber input, returning over the same fiber, into two
data outputs.
The FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-RX converts an optical fiber input into eight video outputs, and two data
outputs. The FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-RX also converts two data inputs into an optical fiber output, returning
over the same fiber.
These units are contained in compact and rugged steel housings with internal dc voltage regulation. The
detachable terminal blocks and LED indicators provide for easy installation and monitoring of video,
optical link, data, and dc power.
The units operate either surface mounted as modular, stand alone units, or within a rack mounted card
cage.
INSTALLATION
THE INSTALLATION OF THIS UNIT SHOULD BE MADE BY A QUALIFIED SERVICE
PERSON(S) AND MUST CONFORM TO ALL LOCAL CODES.
The general connectivity of the units is detailed in Figure 1.
Mount the unit to a secure surface using #8 (3mm) hardware in four places. See Figure 3 for a full size
mounting template. Be sure to allow sufficient room for the required minimum bend radius of the fiber
cable used.
POWER SOURCE
The unit requires a +12VDC power source for proper operation. The DC input is diode protected against
reverse polarity connection.
In the USA and in Canada, for standalone surface mounted installation, an Aventura Technologies FBR-
PSUS12DC1A is supplied with this unit. Contact Aventura Technologies for ordering power supply
units for use in countries other than the USA and Canada.
When installed in a rack mounted card cage, the power for the unit is supplied from the card cage’s
power supply.
POWER CONNECTION
Power is supplied to the unit via a two pin terminal connector. Follow the labeling on the unit for proper
connections of the +12 volt dc and ground leads.

VIDEO INPUT/OUTPUT CONNECTION
The video input and output connections are made via BNC connectors on the front of the units. The
video inputs and outputs are 75 ohms. For proper operation, the video outputs must be terminated with
75 ohms. For optimum performance, the use of the shortest practical length of coax cables is
recommended.
FIBER CONNECTION
The fiber optic connections are made via ST (multimode fiber) or FC (single-mode fiber) connectors,
located on the rear of the units.
DATA INPUT / OUTPUT CONNECTIONS
Data input/output connections are made via an RJ-45 connector on the front of each unit. The pinout of
the data RJ-45 connector is shown in Figure 2.
An RJ-45 to 8-contact terminal block adapter is supplied with the unit to allow for easy termination of
the wires to the units.
Alternatively, a standard category 5e Ethernet patch cord can be used to plug directly into the data RJ-
45 connector. The far side of the patch cord can then be terminated appropriately. Consult the
installation instructions for your copper device if you are unsure which two wires on the copper device
are the drive (data out) wires and which two wires are the receive (data in) wires.
Please note that Data In on the FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-TX becomes Data Out on the FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-
RX after going across the fiber. The reverse flow follows the same orientation.
STATUS INDICATORS
The unit provides the following LED status indicators to aid in installation and troubleshooting:
POWER INDICATOR
A bi-color LED indicator monitors the voltage at the module’s power input connector and the operating
internal voltage of the module. The power status associated with this LED is summarized below.
Power Indicator Power Status
Green Proper Input Voltage Present – Proper Internal Operating Voltage Present
Red Proper Input Voltage Present – Internal Operating Voltage Faulty
Off No Input Voltage Detected
OPTICAL LINK INDICATOR
A bi-color LED indicator monitors the power of, and proper synchronization with the optical input
signal that is being received at the FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-TX and/or FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-RX. The Optical
Link status associated with this LED is summarized below.
Optical Link Indicator Optical Status
Green Proper Optical Input Present
Red Optical Input Not Detected
Off Check Power Supply

VIDEO INPUT INDICATORS
A bi-color LED indicator for each video input channel of the FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-TX monitors the
status of the video input. The video input status associated with this LED is summarized below.
Video Input Indicator Video Input Status
Green Proper Video Input Present
Red Video Input Not Correct (Wrong Level or Polarity)
Off No Video Input Detected
DATA ACTIVITY INDICATOR(/S)
A bi-color LED indicator for each data channel of the FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-TX and FBR-8V2DB(M/S)-
TX monitors the status of the data activity. The data activity status associated with this LED is
summarized below.
Data Activity Indicator Data Activity Status
Blinking Green Input Data Flow Detected
Blinking Red Output Data Flow Detected
Blinking Amber (Both) Simultaneous Input and Output Data Flow Detected
Off No Data Flow Detected
