4 Proper use
MagicSpeed is a speed regulator which maintains a constant set speed. It
compares the actual speed to the set speed and corrects it if necessary.
MagicSpeed is designed as an aid for driving; but it does not relieve you of
the duty to take proper care when driving.
MagicSpeed is designed for installation in cars.
5 Technical description
5.1 Function description
MagicSpeed consists of an electronic module and an interface module. The
electronic module is connected to a control element (accessory, e. g. a lever
or infrared remote control) by means of which you can make the required
settings. The control element is fitted in the dashboard area.
The electronic module measures the current speed and compares it to the
set speed. The interface module is connected to the accelerator pedal and
adjusts the engine power as required. The activation speed of the speed
regulator is about 40 km/h.
The system is equipped with various safety features for your protection.
5.2 Safety features

7 Connecting MagicSpeed electrically
7.1 General notes on laying cables
As far as possible, use original openings or alternative openings
for the connecting cable duct, e. g. the panelling edges, ventilation
grilles or blank panels. If no openings are available, you must drill
holes for the cables. Check beforehand that there is sufficient
space on the other side for the drill head to come out.
Cables and connections which are not properly installed will
cause malfunctions or damage to components. Correct
installation of cables and connections ensures lasting and trouble-
free operation of the retrofitted components.
_MS-800.book Seite 58 Donnerstag, 1. Juni 2006 8:22 08

59
Please observe the following instructions:
z To prevent damage to the cables, when laying them, ensure that they are
far enough away from hot or moving vehicle components (exhaust pipes,
drive shafts, light systems, fans, heater etc.).
z Wrap insulating tape around every connection on the cable (even inside
the vehicle).
z When laying electric connections, ensure that
– they are not kinked or twisted
– they do not rub on edges
– they are not laid in sharp edged ducts without protection (3, page 4).
z Protect every hole you drill against water penetration , e. g. by using a
cable with a sealant and by spraying the cable and the the cable sleeve
with sealant.
7.2 Laying and connecting the wiring harness
Once you have decided where to install the electronic module and the
interface module, you can lay the wiring harness of the speed regulator and

Green/red, pink/red and blue/red
➤ Lay the three cables from the interface module to the electronic module.
➤ Connect the three cables to the interface module.
Note the colour code on the interface module.
Orange cable
Caution
Make sure the ignition is switched off. Otherwise a fuse may blow.
➤ Connect the orange cable to a connected positive terminal (terminal 15).
➤ Use a voltmeter to check whether the selected positive terminal carries
the full operating voltage (12 V) and that the orange cable carries no
voltage when the ignition is off.
This test is usually done at the fuse box.
Caution
Do not connect the orange cable to the power supply of the
vehicle accessories (ACC).
Green cable
➤ Connect the green cable to an earth point on the car or to the bare metal
earth connection on the bodywork.
The main vehicle earth is usually on the left or right hinge post.
Brown and brown/white cables
➤ Connect the brown cable and the brown/white cable to the brake light
switch (8 1, page 7).
If there are more than two cables coming from the brake light switch, this is
how to identify the two cables you need:
➤ Use a voltmeter to measure the voltage on the cables.
One of the two original cables should have a permanent positive voltage
(terminal 30, 12 V) or a connected positive voltage (terminal 15).
_MS-800.book Seite 60 Donnerstag, 1. Juni 2006 8:22 08
MagicSpeed MS800 Connecting MagicSpeed electrically
61
The second original cable should have a voltage of +12 V when the
brake is activated. As soon as the brake pedal is no longer pressed,
there should be no more voltage on that cable.
If you cannot measure a full +12 V on the brake light switch, you car probably
has a digital brake system.
In this case, connect the two cables as follows:
➤ Connect the brown/white cable to a fuse-protected, connected positive
terminal (terminal 15).
➤ Connect the brown cable to the original wire which leads to the brake
lights.
The voltage on this cable is +12 V with the brake applied and 0 V with
the brake released. You will find this cable directly at the brake lights or in
the wiring harness to the rear of the vehicle.
Purple signal cable
The speed regulator switches off (or does not switch on) if the purple cable
is connected to earth.
Note:
On cars with a clutch switch connected to earth, the purple cable
can also be connected to the original clutch switch.
➤ Use a voltmeter to find the cable on the coupling switch carrying 0 V when
the clutch pedal is pressed down.
➤ Connect the purple cable to this cable.
Caution
Check the connection carefully.
A faulty connection can irreparably damage the gearbox.
➤ If you do not connect the purple cable, insulate it with insulating tape.

Yellow and blue signal cables
The yellow cable and the blue cable are for connecting to the travel speed
and engine speed signals respectively:
z Blue cable:
Records the engine or travel speed signal with a voltage between 1.5 V
and 24 V and a frequency between 6 Hz and 8.5 kHz.
Use the blue cable for speed signals whose voltage and frequency are
within these ranges.
z Yellow cable:
Records the engine speed signals with a voltage between 6 V and 250 V
and a frequency between 6 Hz and 488 Hz.
Use the yellow cable to record engine speed signals with a voltage of
more than 20 V or when engine overspeed protection is required.
The signal input depends on the gearbox used in the car.
When connecting the blue and yellow cables, there are various parameters
to take into account; these are described below:
z Which signal input do you want to use (page 63)?
z Do you need engine overspeed protection (page 63)?
z Does your car have an automatic gearbox (page 64)?
z Does your car have a manual gearbox (page 64)?
z Where do you want to record the speed (page 65)?
z Where do you want to record the engine speed (page 65)?
z What are the voltage and frequency of the signal (page 66)?
