A 1 Features
Steam Cleaner EWL 5839 is designed for problem-free operation using dry or wet steam.
It is suitable for cleaning, boiling out or removal of greasy substances in all procedures of dental technology. The unit generates dry steam
to a maximum temperature of 164° C at a pressure of 6 bar. The unit can be set on a bench top, or wall-mounted. Due to the automatic
water supply, the unit is ready for operation throughout the day. The combined pressure and temperature indicator enables checking of the
operating temperature and pressure, even if the unit is switched off.
A 2 For your safety
A 2.1 Observance of the Operating Instructions
Each user of the unit is assumed to have a thorough knowledge and observance of these operating instructions. The unit is designed only
for the applications described. In these operating instructions, particularly important comments are illustrated as follows:
Warning! This is a warning relating to risky and dangerous situations. Non-compliance with this warning can lead to life-
threatening situations.
These warnings must be strictly observed.
Information! This is information relating to specific characteristics to be observed.
A 2.2 Safety considerations
• The unit is designed for use with an electrical supply of 230V / 50Hz. Ensure that your unit is always supplied with the correct voltage.
• The electrical plug must be removed before maintenance and cleaning.
• Safety features:
- If leakage occurs, a moisture sensor automatically switches the unit off.
- A temperature safeguard shuts the unit down at temperatures above 192° C.
- If the operating pressure rises above 7 bar, the unit switches off automatically.
- A safety valve opens automatically in the pressure chamber at an operating pressure of more than 9 bar
.
A 2.3 Liability for function and damage
If the unit is improperly maintained, repaired, or altered by an unqualified person; or is used for purposes for which it was not designed,
then the responsibility for proper function is solely carried by the owner or operator of the unit.
The unit must be maintained and operated in accordance with these operating instructions.
KaVo EWL is not liable for damage arising as a result of non-compliance with the above information.
Guarantee and liability conditions as described in the Sales and Delivery Conditions from KaVo EWL are not extended through the above
information.
Ensure that these operating instructions are available at all times, are read, and understood.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
A 3 Applications
Steam Cleaner EWL 5839 assists in the cleaning of metal and porcelain work, as well as for boiling out and removal of grease from
instruments in all procedures of dental technology. You have the choice of cleaning the object with dry or also wet steam. It is possible to
switch to wet steam at any time.
A 4 Preparing for installation
A 4.1 Unpacking/Transport
Remove all packing materials, and set the unit on a firm and flat surface. Alternatively, use the included wall bracket to mount it on the
wall. Check the included accessories.
Before moving the unit, ensure that the electrical supply is disconnected.
When shipping the unit, pack it in a suitable container to prevent transport damage.
A 4.2 Installation / Storage
• Set the unit on its final place, horizontally level, or mount it on the wall.
• When wall mounting, ensure that the wall is capable of carrying the load. (use the following sketch as a guide for drilling)
• Ensure that the working and operating areas are not cramped (observe unit dimensions) - do not set up outside!
• For long-term storage, protect the unit against dampness and dust.
• Install the following connections before putting the unit into operation:
- Connect the water supply hose to a faucet, with back-flow valve and ventilation (as for a washing machine)
- Fix the supplied drainage hoses: a) under the pressure chamber, and b) to the back of the collecting tray.
- Guide the hoses into a heat-resistant bucket or a sink, as very hot water drains.
- Connect the footswitch with the special socket on the right side of the housing.
- Plug the unit into an electrical socket compatible with the voltage of the unit.
No unwanted spraying is possible, as the footswitch controls two separate circuits.
Before operating the steam cleaner, put on heat-resistant gloves and safety glasses.
If the unit is not to be used for a lengthy period, remove the electrical plug and shut off the water supply.

A 5 Preparing for operation
- Open the water faucet.
- Press the main switch (green) – unit fills automatically with water, and starts to heat up.
- Only with a new unit, or alternatively after emptying the pressure chamber (rinsing procedure):- after pressure has reached approx. 4 bar, ventilate
the chamber once – point the spray nozzle towards the collecting tray and at the same time activate the footswitch until the manometer drops to zero.
After about 15 minutes the operating pressure reaches 6 bar, and the unit is ready for operation.
A 6 Operation
- Press the keyboard to select either dry or wet steam.
- When selecting wet steam, choose the moisture content by turning the scale knob from position “0” (no moisture) to position “5” (maximum
content)
- Pick up the nozzle, and control the steam output by the footswitch.
Attention! Danger of scalding!
• Hold the nozzle only at the handle.
• Do not direct the spray at people.
• Steam can be as hot as approx. 164° C, therefore spray only in the direction of the collecting tray or the sink.

A 8 Care of the unit
Before cleaning or maintaining the unit, let it cool down!
A 8.1 Cleaning
In order to ensure trouble-free operation, the unit should be cleaned at regular intervals, using a mild detergent with a sponge or soft cloth.
Do not use any chemicals.
The collecting tray can be removed from the unit for cleaning.
One version of the unit comes with a collection drawer and lid to clean, simply pull it out.
The nameplate must always be legible and never be removed.
A 8.2 Maintenance
An integral part of the KaVo Steam Cleaner is a special technique to prevent build up of lime, therefore, at least once a week, minor lime
particles should be flushed out. It is not necessary to drain the water.
However, if it does become necessary to drain the chamber, please note the following:
Check the manometer to ensure that the unit has cooled down, and that the drain hose leads to a heat-resistant bucket or to a sink.
For your own safety, it is recommended to permanently install the drain hose as water and steam from a unit that has not cooled down is
very hot approx. 164° C.
Using the square socket wrench, turn the drainage valve from its locked position 90° in an anti-clockwise direction at the same time
pressing on the footswitch until no more water flows.
Re-lock the valve by turning 90° in a clockwise direction.
An additional feature advises when rinsing is necessary:
If you have not carried out the weekly rinsing, after 200 hours of use an electronic operating-hours meter warns that rinsing is necessary.
This is indicated by the permanent flashing of the yellow dry/wet-steam control light together with the red low-water level control light.
The meter can be set back to “0“ (see RESET)
Further use of the unit is possible, however, without problems.
Rinsing procedure (summary only – see sticker on left side of housing)
Rinsing the unit is best carried out in a cold condition, before use. Otherwise, switch unit off and let it cool down until it is virtually
pressure-free (under 2 bar).
Open the water faucet, and switch the unit on.
Using the square socket wrench, open the drainage valve on the left side of the housing by turning a complete 90° to the second stop. In
the process, press the safety-lock button at the right of the valve.
Pressing once partly opens the valve (safety lock danger of scalding!); to completely open the valve, press the button again.
Hold the black rinsing key at the left of the valve pressed down until only clear water flows out of the drainage hose. Close the valve by
turning it back 90°.
Now proceed in accordance with A 5 (Putting into operation) and A 6 (Operation).
Re-setting the operating-hours meter = RESET
Switch the unit off.
Hold the dry-steam key pressed at the same time switch unit on.
Operating hours count starts from zero.
The safety valve for the pressure chamber must be tested for proper function at regular intervals by a Service Technician!

A 8.3 Repairs
Service or repairs of the unit must be carried out only by trained technical personnel.
Modifications by others, and use of unauthorized parts, invalidates the Product Liability.
