Wiring Diagram (WIREMAP) test function:
When the wiring diagram, (WIREMAP), test function is selected, the tester will carry
out a wiring diagram (WIREMAP) test and displays the following information while
the check is being carried out:
Test 1: Short Circuit (SHORT)
If there is a short circuit on the cable or terminal, it will be shown on the display.
For example, if the test found 12 short circuits the display would appear as shown
below:
Press the p or q key to restart the test or press the ‘PAIR&L’ key to return to the
main menu.
Always correct a short circuit fault rst and then start further test measurements.
Test 2: Far-end matcher (ID) is not found or the cable is not inserted in local
port (L):
The LAN Network Cable Tester will automatically detect the far-end matcher (ID) or
local port (L) cable. See the image below if the far-end of the cable being checked is
not inserted into the far-end matcher (ID) or if the cable is not inserted into the local
port (L) in a local test:
Press the p or q key to restart the test or press the ‘PAIR&L’ key to return to the
main menu.
6
Test 3: Normal wiring diagram (WIREMAP) display:
The LAN Network Cable Tester will automatically detect the far-end matcher (ID) or
local port (L) cable and it will display the wiring diagram (WIREMAP). If it nds the
far-end matcher (ID) or the local port (L) on the far-end of the cable being checked,
the display will show the following:
The ‘R:’ line shows the RJ45 jack pin number of the far-end port and ‘ID1’ is the
far-end matcher number.
The ‘|:’ line shows the connecting wire between far-end port and master port.
The ‘M:’ line shows the RJ45 jack pin number of master port.
Press the p or q key to restart the test or press the ‘PAIR&L’ key to return to the
main menu.
Test 4: Wiring diagram, (WIREMAP), display when there is an open circuit at
the far-end of the cable:
On the ‘R:’ line, pins ‘3’ and ‘6’ display ‘x’, indicating an open circuit towards the
far-end plug on pins ‘3’ and ‘6’. The open circuit should be located within 10% of
the cable length measured from the far-end plug.
Note:
If you use the far-end matcher (ID) to measure the wiring diagram (WIREMAP), because the
test is made via the paired cable cores, the open circuit at the far-end always displays in pairs,
as shown above. This is the case whether there is one open circuit or all are open circuits in
the far-end pins ‘3’ and ‘6’. For identication, move the tester to the far-end and repeat the
measurement.
7
Test 5: Wiring diagram, (WIREMAP), display when there is an open circuit at
the near-end of the cable:
The display will show a wiring diagram, (WIREMAP), as shown below if there is an
open circuit at the near-end plug.
On the ‘M:’ line, pin ‘3’ displays ‘x’, indicating an open circuit towards the near-end
plug on pin ‘3’. The open circuit should be located within 10% of the cable length
measured from the near-end plug.
Test 6: Wiring diagram, (WIREMAP), display when there is an open circuit in the
middle of the cable:
The display will show a wiring diagram, (WIREMAP), as shown below if there is an
open circuit in the middle of the cable:
On the ‘I’ line, pin ‘3’ displays ‘x’, indicating an open circuit in the middle of the
cable on pin ‘3’. The open circuit should be located within 10% - 90% of the cable
length measured from the near-end plug.
For further help in locating open circuits, the pair and length function (PAIR &
LENGTH) of the tester can be used as follows:
8
Pair and Length measurement (PAIR & LENGTH) function:
Whether or not there is a far-end recogniser, (ID), at the far-end of the cable, the
LAN Network Cable Tester is capable of carrying out a ‘Pair and Length’ (PAIR
& LENGTH) measurement. Therefore, the far-end recogniser, (ID), can remain
connected during a wiring diagram, (WIREMAP), and pair and length (PAIR &
LENGTH) measurement. This avoids it being repeatedly inserted and removed.
When the pair and length (PAIR & LENGTH) measurement function is selected, the
LAN Network Cable Tester display will display an image typical to that shown below
as the measurement is being made:
Note: Due to different technical parameters in various branded cables, the user should carry
out the LAN Network Cable Tester Dynamic Calibration function before making a length
measurement. (See page 12)
Test 1: Short circuit (SHORT)
The LAN Network Cable Tester will display an image typical to that shown below if
there are any short circuits on the cable or terminal, (12 short circuits are shown in
the example below).
(The tester cannot show the exact location of the short circuit). Press the p or q
key to restart the test or press the ‘PAIR&L’ key to return to the main menu.
Always correct a short circuit error rst and then start further test measurements.
9
Test 2: Normal pair and length (PAIR & LENGTH) display
The LAN Network Cable Tester, in ‘Pair and Length’ mode, will display information
typical to that shown below when the cable is under normal conditions.
It shows the ‘Pair’ line number followed by the cable length.
Press the p or q key to restart the test or press the ‘PAIR&L’ key to return to main
menu.
Test 3: Abnormal pair and length (PAIR & LENGTH) display
If Paired and Unpaired lines are detected in the pair and length (PAIR & LENGTH)
measurement, the LAN Network Cable Tester will display the paired lines rst. See
the example display below:
In the example above, the last line, (78q), indicates there is no pair found in lines
7 and 8. It will display the length of the unpaired line numbers, (as shown below), if
you press the q key.
Press the ‘PAIR&L’ key to return to the main menu.
10
It will display an ‘x’ to indicate an open circuit if the length is less than 90% of the
other line pair length. In the example shown, the open circuit is located at around
89.7m from the tester. The open circuit line number could be rechecked using the
WIREMAP function.
Press the p key to return to the previous display or press the q key to show further
unpaired line number lengths. Press ‘PAIR&L’ to return to the main menu.
Coaxial cable and telephone line measurement function
After entering into the coaxial cable and telephone line, (Coax/Tel), measurement
function, the LAN Network Cable Tester will show a display typical to that shown
below:
It will display ‘OPEN’ if there are any open circuits or if the coaxial cable or
telephone line is not connected.
It will display ‘SHORT’ if there are any short circuits.
Press the p or q key to repeat the measurement or press the ‘PAIR&L’ key to
return to the main menu.
The far-end recogniser will sound a beep prompt if the cable connection is in a
normal condition.
Note:
For coaxial cable measurements, two BNC adaptor accessories are required. One is used to
connect the ‘M’ port RJ45 and the cable under test and the other adaptor is used to connect the
far-end matcher port ‘R’ and the cable under test.
For telephone line measurement, two RJ11 adaptors accessories are required. One is used to
connect ‘M’ port RJ45 and the cable under test and the other adaptor is used to connect the
far-end matcher port ‘R’ and the cable under test.
