an HDX and SoundStructure System
ThisapplicationnotedescribeshowtousePolycom’sEagleEyeDirectorwithanHDXVideoconferencingsystemthatis
integratedwithaSoundStructuresystemanddetailsthestepsforcreatingaSoundStructureproject.
Integrating the HDX codec and the EagleEye Director
ThePolycomEagleEyeDirectorforHDXdeliversanaffordable,personalizedtelepresenceexperienceingroupmeetings
byintelligentlyemulatingprofessionalvideoproductiontechniquesenablingbettercommunicationandmore
productivemeetingsnoremotecontroloruserinterventionisrequired.SoundStructuresolutionsoffertheultimatein
audioqualityandflexibilityforanysize
room.Combiningthesecomponentstogetherisanaturale xtensionoftheHDX
codecandimprovestheoverallaudioexperience.
AsshowninFigure1,whentheEagleEyeDirectorisusedwithanHDXcodec,thetwosystemsareconnectedtogether
withacustomcableincludedwithEagleEyeDirectorthatconnects
theaudiooutputs(1Land1R)fromtheHDXcodecto
theEagleEyeDirectorandconnects thesameaudiototheAmplifierviaadditionalbalancedaudiocabl es.Inadditionto
theaudiocables,thereis avideocable(redinthisfigure)fortakingthevideooutputfromtheEagleEyeDirector
intothe
HDXcodec.

EagleEyeDirectorneedsthemixofalltheremoteaudiosothattheEagleEyeDirectorcanproperlydiscernbetwee n
audioplayedintotheroomfromtheremotesites(i.e.,remotetalkers)andthelocaltalkeraudiointhelocalroomwhen
determiningcamerapositioning.
Integrating the SoundStructure with the HDX codec and EagleEye Director
TheHDXcodec/EagleEyeDirectorsolutioncanbeupgradedwithoneormoreSoundStructuredevicesbyreplacingthe
analogoutputs1Land1RfromtheHDXcodecwithtwoanalogoutputs(outputs1and2)totheAmplifierandtwomore
outputs(outputs3and4)totheEagleEyeDirector
asshowninFigure2.

Thefourbalancedaudiocablesusedareconnectedstraightthroughwithpin1connectedtopin1,pin2connectedto
pin2,andpin3connectedtopin3asshowninFigure3.

BeforeconnectingtheSoundStructuresystemtotheHDXcodec,itisrecommendedthatyouenableLiveMusicmodein
theHDXcodec.TodothisnavigatetheHDXUIfromAdminSettings>AudioSettingsandselect LiveMusicmode.This

settingwilldisableanyaudioprocessingwiththeHDXandminimizeanyaudiosuppressionthatmayoccurintheHDX
codec.ItisimportanttomakethischangebeforeconnectingtheHDXtotheSoundStructuresystembecausethe
LiveMusicmodeoptionisnotvisibleoncethetwodevicesareconnectedover
ConferenceLink.
TheSoundStructuresystemisconnectedtotheHDXcode cusingtheConferenceLinkconnection.Whenthe
SoundStructuresystemisintegratedwiththeHDX900xcodec,the18”RJ45maletoRJ45maleConferenceLinkcable,
245723574001,whichisincludedwitheverySoundStructuredeviceshouldbeused
toconnectdirectlytotheHDX
codec.
IftheSoundStructuresystemisintegratedwithanHDX800x,HDX700x,orHDX600xcodec,theRJ45femaletoWalta
maledongle,245725646001,shouldbeusedwiththe18”RJ45maletoRJ45maleConferenceLinkcabletoconnect
theRJ45
connectionontheSoundStructuredevicetotheWaltaconnectorontheHDX800x/700x/600xcodec.Seethe
BestPracticesGuidePolycomSoundStructureandHDXMicrophonesonPolycom.comfordetailedinformation,pinouts,
andconnectiondiagrams.
SoundStructure Studio Configuration File
TheSoundStructureconfiguration filecanbeeasilycustomizedtosupporttheadditionaloutputchan nelrequiredto
drivetheinputtotheEagleEyeDirector.Tocompletethisintegration,thefollowingstepsarerequired:
1. AddanewStereooutputfromSoundStructuretotheinputontheEagleEyeDirector
2. Addagroup
thatcontainsboththeAmplifierandEagleEyeDirectoroutputs
3. Ensuretheinroomvolumecontrolisdoneproperlysothatinroomleveladjustmentsareheardintheroomare
alsoheardbytheEagleEyeDirector.
Asanexampleofthecustomizationsrequired,anexampleconfigurationfilethatsupports
2HDXCeilingmicrophones,
anHDXcodec,andastereoaudioamplifieroutputwillbecreat ed.
Tostarttheproject,launchtheSoundStructureStudioprogramandselectNewProjectfromtheSoundStructureStudio
Filemenu.
Step 1: Select the Inputs
1. AtStep1,clickMicrophoneandthenclickHDXCeilingmicrophone,
2. Adjustthequantityto2andclickAdd,
3. Next,addtheHDXcodecbyclickingVideoCodec,PolycomHDX,andclickAdd.
TheresultingchannelsthataredefinedareshowninFigure4.

Step 2: Select the Outputs
Tocreatetheoutputs,followthesesteps:
1. ClickNexttoselecttheoutputsandselectastereoamplifiercalled“Amplifier”andclickAddassummarizedin
Figure5.

2. Next,selectanotherstereoamplifieroutput,renamethechannelto“EagleEye”fortheEagleEyeDirectorand
selectAddassummarizedinFigure6.

Step 3: Select the Equipment
ClickNexttocontinueandselectthedefaultSoundStructuredevices.InthiscaseaSoundStructureC8deviceisrequired
toimplementthesystemasshowninFigure8.YoucanmanuallyselectadifferentdeviceorsimplyclickNexttogetto
thelaststep.

Step 4: Finish the Project
ClickFinishtocreatetheofflineprojectasshowninFigure9.

Matrix Settings
NavigatetotheMatrixpageofthedesignedprojecttoreviewthesettingsasshowninFigure10.Asshowninthisfigure
theremoteaudiofromthePolycomHDXInchannelisroutedtoboththeAmplifierandtheEagleEyeoutputs.Thebold
crosspointvaluesindicatethematrixcrosspointsare
unmutedandthevalueindicatesthegainwith0dBindicatingthat

thesignallevelisnotchangedatthematrixcrosspoint.Crosspointscanbemutedandunmutedbyrightclickingonthe
crosspoint.

AfterclickingAddGroupselecttheAmplifierchanneland,whilepressingtheCtrlbuttononthekeyboard,clickthe
outputchannelEagleEyetoselectbothoutputsandthenclickAddChannel>.Thiswilladdbothaudiochannelstothe
ToLocalRoomgroupasshowninFigure12.

Aspartofensuringthevolumecontroladjustsboth theAmplifierandEagleEyeoutputs,theuserminandmaxfader
settingsontheToLocalRoomgroupwillbesettomatchtheminandmaxfadersettingsontheAmplifierchannel.The
reasonforsettingtheuserminandmaxfadervalues
isthatanytimeaSoundStructuresystemisdesignedwithanHDX
codec,bydefaulttheAmplifierfaderminandmaxvaluesareautomaticallysetto‐31and20dBrespectivelyasshownin
theleftsideofFigure15.Theuserminandmaxvaluesaresettoallowthe
audiotobeadjustedbytheHDXcodecover
arangeof0and51andhavethatvolumerangemapdirectlyintotheAmplifierfadervaluesof‐31to+20dB.Thismeans
thatwhentheHDXvolumeissetto0,thefaderontheAmplifierwillbesetto
‐31dBandwhentheHDXvolumeissetto
51,thefaderontheAmplifierchannelwillbesetto+20dB.
Becausewe’vedefinedthegroupToLocalRoom,we’llsetthegrou puserminfadervalueto‐31dBasshownintheright
sideofFigure15.Theusermaxvalue
defaultsto+20dB,sonochangeisrequir ed.Changingtheuserminfadervalueof
theToLocalRoomchannelgroupwillautomaticallyadjusttheuserminfadervalueofallchannelsinthegroup.Inthis
casetheuserminfadervalueoftheEagleEyeoutputissetto‐31dB.

SoundStructure Volume Control Events
Next,let’sreviewtheEventsthatareassociatedwiththisprojectandensurethattheaudioleveltotheEagleEye
DirectorstayssynchronizedwiththeaudiolevelsenttoAmplifier.
OntheeventspageshowninFigure16,thereisadefaulteventcalled_PolycomHDXtoSSTVolumethat
mapsthe
volumefromtheHDXcodec,usingthecl ink_volumeparameter,tothefadervalueoftheAmplifierchannel.Tokeepthe
leveloftheAmplifierandEagleEyeoutputsthesame,editthiseventbydoubleclickingintheeventandchangethe
AmplifieroutputtotheToLocalRoomoutputasshown
inFigure17.

NowifthevolumechangesontheHDXcodec,eitherviaanHDXIRremoteoranexplicitHDXAPIcommandforadjusting
thevolume,theToLocalRoomgroupwithinSoundStructurewilltrackthatchangeand,becauseToLocalRoomisagroup,
changeswilladjustthegroupmembers:AmplifierandEagleEye.Thiswill
automaticallymakeitlouderorquieterto
boththeaudioamplifierchannelandtotheEagle EyeDirector.
Confirming the Physical Wiring Matches the Project Wiring
Nowthattheprojectisconfiguredproperly,thenextstepistoconfirmthephysicalwiringoftheaudiototheAmplifier
andtotheEagleEyeDirector.NavigatetotheWiringpageand
expandtheoutputareaasshowninFigure19.Inthis
figuretheAmplifierisconnectedtooutputs1and2andtheEagleEyeDirectorisconnectedtooutputs3and4.

Ifthiswiringdoesnotmatchhowyouwouldliketoconnectthesystem,youcanclickanddragaudiochannelsonthe
wiringpagetomovetodifferentoutputstomatchyourdesired wiring.Inthisexample,thewiringmatchesourdesired
systemandthereforenofurtherchangesarerequired
onthewiringpage.
Saving the SoundStructure System Project
Oncetheconfigurationchangeshavebeenmade,itisimportanttosavetheprojecttodisktoensurethechangesare
savedtothefilethatwillultimatelybeuploadedtotheSoun dStructuresystem.Tosavethefile,navigatetotheFile
menuandselectSave
Project1asshowninFigure20.
