1 Safety instructions
1.1 Designated use
The WirelessHART Test Kit SWT70 is a test system for individual WirelessHART
connections. The WirelessHART Test Kit consists of two WirelessHART test adapters
SWA70 with special test firmware, magnetic fittings and an operating program. The two
WirelessHART test adapters can be configured as a transmitter or receiver and are used to
test and measure individual wireless connections in a WirelessHART network.
The WirelessHART test adapters SWA70 in the WirelessHART Test Kit SWT70 may not be
used to operate field devices. The WirelessHART test adapters SWA70 may not be
permanently installed in a facility or connected to a WirelessHART network.
1.2 Installation, commissioning and operation
The WirelessHART Test Kit SWT70 can be operated safely in compliance with the current
technical safety standards and the applicable EU guidelines.
The WirelessHART Test Kit can be a source of danger if it is not mounted correctly or if it is
used in applications for which it is not intended.
The WirelessHART Test Kit may only be installed, commissioned, operated and maintained
by trained, qualified specialists authorized to perform such work by the facility's owner-
operator. The specialist staff must have read and understood these Operating Instructions
and must follow the instructions they contain. The devices may not be modified or repaired
in any way.
These specifications also apply for the battery unit.
1.3 Operational safety
Applications The WirelessHART Test Kit SWT70 meets the requirements of the EU guidelines for the
various range of applications envisaged for the device. The permitted operating conditions
must be observed. See “Technical data” on page 25.
Battery unit In the WirelessHART Test Kit, power is supplied to the WirelessHART test adapters via high-
power lithium-thionyl chloride battery units. This has implications for operational safety
and storage. Please refer to the hazardous materials regulations provided in the
accompanying Safety Data Sheet (CD-ROM folder: Safety Data Sheet).
The battery units can remain in the test adapters. Once the testing period has elapsed, the
test adapters quit wireless operation and therefore no additional energy is used.
Warning!
Any tampering with the antenna, electronics or battery unit invalidates Endress+Hauser’s
warranty along with the telecommunications approval.

WirelessHART Test Kit SWT70 Function and system design
Endress + Hauser 13
3 Function and system design
The WirelessHART Test Kit SWT70 is a test system for individual WirelessHART connections. The
test system can either be used to solve problems in existing WirelessHART networks or used in
advance for project planning. The test system works independently of existing WirelessHART
networks.
The WirelessHART Test Kit SWT70 consists of two WirelessHART test adapters SWA70 with a
special test firmware, magnetic fittings and an operating program. Both WirelessHART test adapters
can be configured as a transmitter or receiver. The transmitter and receiver can be easily mounted
at the desired position using the magnetic fittings.
The transmitter and receiver are configured one after another via the operating program.
The transmitter transmits test packets cyclically to all the configured channels. The packets
received by the receiver are evaluated statistically, and the signal quality is determined in
this way.

4 Installation
The WirelessHART test adapters of the WirelessHART Test Kit are mounted on magnetic
surfaces using the magnetic fitting.
4.1 Installation conditions
Note!
In order to avoid attenuation of the electromagnetic waves and any resulting impairment in
the operation of the WirelessHART test adapter, the following must be observed when
mounting the adapter:
The antenna must be at least 6 cm away from a wall or post (1).
The antenna of the WirelessHART test adapter should never be located between a wall/
post and the housing (2).
There must be a distance of at least 6 cm between the antenna and any metal material
running parallel to it (3).
The antenna must be aligned vertically, and point upwards (4).
Ideally, there should not be any wall or similar between the transmitter and receiver.

5.3 Connecting the HART modem and installing the mo-
dem driver
The WirelessHART test adapters must be connected to a HART modem for configuration and
measurement purposes. The driver for the HART modem must be installed on the same
computer that runs the "WirelessHART Connectivity Tester" operating program.
Fig. 5-2: Connecting a WirelessHART test adapter to a computer via a modem
Proceed as follows to connect the HART modem and to install the modem driver if it is not
already installed:
1. Connect the HART modem to the terminal lugs of the cable gland of the WirelessHART test
adapter.
If the modem has a built-in communication resistor, this resistor must be switched on.
If the modem does not have a built-in communication resistor, proceed as described
in the "Troubleshooting" section. See “Troubleshooting” on page 24., Number 1.
