How to Use This Guide
Purpose of this
Guide
This site preparation guide provides the information you need to fully prepare your
site for the arrival and installation of the GPS Explorer system. Complete preparation
helps ensure a smooth installation process and correct and safe operation.
Audience This guide is intended for the personnel who will schedule, manage, and perform the
tasks required to prepare your site for installation of the GPS Explorer system.

Safety Conventions Used in This Document
Safety Alert
Words
Four safety-related user attention words appear in the text of Applied Biosystems
user documentation. Each word implies a particular level of observation or action as
described below.
IMPORTANT! Indicates information that is necessary for proper instrument
operation, accurate chemistry kit use, or safe use of a chemical.
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if not avoided,
may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafe
practices.
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if not avoided,
could result in death or serious injury.
Indicates an imminently hazardous situation that, if not avoided,
will result in death or serious injury. This signal word is to be limited to the most
extreme situations.
Examples Examples of the WARNING and CAUTION alert words appear below.
Do not attempt to lift or move the computer or the monitor
without the assistance of others. Depending on the weight of the computer and/or the
monitor, moving them may require two or more people.

PHYSICAL INJURY HAZARD. Use this product only as
specified in the documents provided with the system. Using this computer in a
manner not specified by Applied Biosystems may result in personal injury or damage
to the computer.
Moving and
Lifting Stand-
Alone Computers
and Monitors
Do not attempt to lift or move the computer or the monitor
without the assistance of others. Depending on the weight of the computer and/or the
monitor, moving them may require two or more people.
Things to consider before lifting the computer and/or the monitor:
Make sure that you have a secure, comfortable grip on the computer or the
monitor when lifting.
Make sure that the path from where the device is to where it is being moved is
clear of obstructions.
Do not lift an object and twist your torso at the same time.
Keep your spine in a good neutral position while lifting with your legs.
Participants should coordinate lift and move intentions with each other before
actually lifting and carrying.
Instead of lifting the computer or the monitor from the packing box, carefully
tilt the box on its side and hold it stationary while someone slides the contents
out of the box.
Bar Code Scanner Laser Safety
Laser
Classification
The bar code scanner option available with the GPS Explorer workstation is
categorized as a Class II laser.
Laser Safety
Requirements
Class 2 (II) lasers are low-power, visible-light lasers that can damage the eyes.
Never look directly into the laser beam. The scanner is designed to prevent human
access to harmful levels of laser light during normal operation, user maintenance, or
during prescribed service operations.
LASER HAZARD. Class 2 (II) lasers can cause damage to eyes.
Avoid looking into a Class 2 (II) laser beam or pointing a Class 2 (II) laser beam into
another person’s eyes.

Workstation Safety
Correct ergonomic configuration of your workstation can reduce or prevent effects
such as fatigue, pain, and strain. Minimize or eliminate these effects by configuring
your workstation to promote neutral or relaxed working positions.
MUSCULOSKELETAL AND REPETITIVE MOTION
HAZARD. These hazards are caused by potential risk factors that include but are not
limited to repetitive motion, awkward posture, forceful exertion, holding static
unhealthy positions, contact pressure, and other workstation environmental factors.
Use equipment that comfortably supports you in neutral working positions and
allows adequate accessibility to the keyboard, monitor, and mouse.
Position the keyboard, mouse, and monitor to promote relaxed body and head
postures.

Overview
Before an Applied Biosystems representative confirms and tests the GPS Explorer
system, you need to fully prepare your site for the installation. To ensure that you
complete all site preparations, checklists are provided in Chapter 2, “Checklists.
Site Preparation
Schedule
To minimize the time between the shipment arrival and installation confirmation:
1. Complete the site preparation tasks (Chapter 1).
2. Fill out the corresponding checklists (Chapter 2), making sure you have faxed
the Mascot® Software License Agreement to Applied Biosystems.
3. Schedule a confirmation and installation verification session with your Applied
Biosystems service representative.
4. Verify with an Applied Biosystems representative by telephone that:
All checklists are complete.
The purchase order is complete. You have considered all components and
options in preparing the site.

The general site preparation tasks and a suggested sequence for completing the
customer tasks are summarized in Figure 1-1. The responsibilities of Applied
Biosystems are described in Figure 1-2. The sequence can vary, but always:

Assigning Personnel
Table 1-1 summarizes specific site preparation tasks and suggests the personnel
assignments to accomplish the tasks. Use the table to help schedule and manage the
site preparation process.

Installation Coordinator Reviews the Site Preparation Guide for safety information and system
requirements.
Coordinates personnel and tasks.
Orders required materials.
Chooses the site.
Ensures that an operational Applied Biosystems 4700 Proteomics Analyzer is
connected to the network (preferably in the same domain).
Reviews checklists with applicable personnel, then with an Applied Biosystems
representative to verify the site is properly prepared.
Receives and inspects the system.
Ensures the site is clear of unnecessary material on the installation day.
Ensures that the completed MASCOT® software license agreement has been
faxed to Applied Biosystems, and a software license agreement has been e-
mailed back.
Laboratory Safety
Representative
Reviews the site preparation guide for safety information.
Ensures that the required safety practices and equipment are in place.
Will be available throughout unpacking and setup.
Facilities Personnel Verify the following requirements are met:
Space at the installation site
Building clearances
Temperature and humidity
– Electrical
–Computer
–Networking
Move the boxed system components to the installation site.
Will be available throughout installation.
At least two people will be available to help the Applied Biosystems service
representative move and position the system.
Network or IT Specialist Ensures that one active, tested LAN connection is in place for both the 4700
Proteomics Analyzer and the GPS Explorer computer, and that the GPS
Explorer computer can connect to the 4700 Proteomics Analyzer.
Ensures that network hardware is compatible with an RJ45-type connector.
If necessary, will supply additional cables.
Will be available during installation to connect the system to the network.
Ensures the computer, after it is networked, can access the Internet.
Installs GPS Explorer and associated software.
Will be available to communicate with Applied Biosystems regarding software
installation and testing.
Provides and installs a network or dedicated printer.

Selecting the Site
Overview When deciding where to install the workstation, keep in mind the following
requirements:
Space – The site must have space sufficient to accommodate the layout and the
clearances specified in “Space Requirements” on page 1-5.
•Environment You need to provide the conditions specified in Environmental
Requirements” on page 1-6.
Altitude – This workstation is designed for indoor use only and for altitudes
between –16 to 3048 m (–50 and 10,000 feet).
Pollution rating – The system has a pollution degree rating of 2 and may be
installed in an environment that has nonconductive pollutants only (see
“Environmental Requirements” on page 1-6).
Temperature and humidity – The site must be maintained at the
temperature and humidity levels specified in “Temperature and Humidity
Requirements” on page 1-6.
Electrical power quick disconnect In case of emergency, you must be able to
disconnect the main power supply to the computer immediately. See “Electrical
Requirements” on page 1-6.
Computer Requirements
Network access – The GPS Explorer workstation requires an active,
dedicated network connection that is near the computer. The network must
provide connection between the 4700 Proteomics Analyzer and the GPS
Explorer computer. See “Network Requirements” on page 1-7.
Printer Access – The system requires access to a network or dedicated
printer (see “Printer Requirements” on page 1-8).
Safety – The site must have specific safety practices and policies in place to
protect laboratory personnel from potential hazards. Applicable safety
procedures must be followed at all times.

The GPS Explorer workstation includes the computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse,
and handheld bar code scanner (optional).
Laboratory Personnel Review safety information.
Primary users (responsible for training other users) are available during the
installation for several hours of training.

The dimensions and weights of the workstation components are listed below.
Clearances Provide at least 15 cm (6 inches) of clearance at the back of the computer for
ventilation, service access, and cable routing.
Environmental Requirements

Requirements
Table 1-2 provides electrical specifications for the GPS Explorer computer. For all
indicated input voltages, a 15 A circuit is required.
At 110 V, the computer monitor has a nominal current draw of 2 A; at 240 V, the
current draw is 1 A. Mains supply voltage fluctuations are not to exceed ±10% of the
nominal voltage or as stated by the manufacturer.

Antivirus Software Requirements
The integrated computer provided by Applied Biosystems is shipped with
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional operating system with Service Pack 3,
Internet Explorer 6.0, Microsoft Office XP Professional, and Oracle9i Release 2
(Standard Edition 9.2.0.1.0) installed.
No antivirus software is provided. Only Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition v7.5 has
been tested with the GPS Explorer software. With this antivirus software installed,
you may notice a decrease in performance, even if real-time file scanning is turned
off. If antivirus software must be used, Applied Biosystems recommends this
software and version.
Do not upgrade currently installed software (including the
operating system, service pack, Internet Explorer, or Oracle) or install additional
software, other than antivirus software as described above, on the GPS Explorer
computer. Changes to the configured software could void the warranty and cause the
system not to operate.
Network Requirements
LAN Connection An active, tested LAN connection must be in place. The LAN must provide
connection between the GPS Explorer Workstation and the 4700 Proteomics
Analyzer.
Network Cables The GPS Explorer Workstation is factory configured for the TCP/IP protocol. The
computer includes a fast Ethernet® adapter (10/100baseT) with an RJ45-type
connector and one 3-m (10-foot) Ethernet cable.
If the LAN receptacle is more than 10 feet (3 m) from the GPS Explorer computer,
you must supply a Category 5 RJ45 cable of the required length.

If you are installing GPS Explorer Remote Access Client software on a computer

Safety Practices and Equipment
A safety representative from your facility must ensure that all applicable:
Safety practices and policies to protect laboratory personnel from potential
hazards are established and are followed by personnel.
Safety devices and equipment are available at the installation site, including:
Protection from any sources of hazardous chemicals, radiation (lasers,
radioisotopes, radioactive wastes, and so on) and potentially infectious
biological material that may be present in the work area.

Shipping List Verify that the items on the shipping list are the same items that were ordered.
Inspect Boxes for
Damage
Carefully inspect the boxes and report any damage to an Applied Biosystems service
representative. Record any damage or mishandling on the shipping documents.
Moving the Computer
Moving Schedule Before the date of installation:
Clear the installation site of all unnecessary materials.
Move the boxed equipment from the receiving area to the installation site.
Do not attempt to lift or move the computer or the monitor
without the assistance of others. Depending on the weight of the computer and/or the
monitor, moving them may require two or more people.
Completing the MASCOT® Software License Agreement

To enable the use of the MASCOT® software with the GPS Explorer software, you
must complete the MASCOT® software license agreement on the last page of this
guide, then fax the agreement to Applied Biosystems at 508-383-7855.
On receipt of the agreement, a MASCOT® software license file will be sent to the
e-mail address you provide in the agreement.
Connecting the Workstation
At the installation site, unpack the boxes, then have your network or IT specialist:
1. Connect the monitor, computer, keyboard and mouse.
2. If applicable, connect the bar code scanner (see the Handheld Bar Code
Scanner Installation Guide).
3. Connect the workstation to an AC power outlet.
4. Power on the workstation.
5. Connect the workstation to the LAN with the supplied Ethernet cable. If the
cable is too short, connect using a Category 5 RJ45 cable of the required
length.
6. Use My Network Places or Windows Explorer to confirm that the GPS
Explorer computer can access the 4700 Proteomics Analyzer.
