Functionality
The purpose of the ECA 86 module is to enable monitoring and maximum limiting of
domestic hot-water temperature. When the domestic hot-water temperature rises above a
preset maximum limit, the ECA 86 module will generate an alarm. To indicate the alarm:
The ECL Comfort display ashes
By means of a relay output, the ECA 86 module can switch on an external device, for
example a lamp.
With the ECA 86 module installed, the ECL Comfort can monitor temperatures at up to four
extra locations. The actual temperature readings are visible in the ECL Comfort display but
they are not used for automatic control of temperatures in the heating system. One of the
measured temperatures can be used to generate alarms. Figure 1 shows an example of the
placement of sensors in a hot-water circuit.

Instructions ECA 86 Installation
When the hot-water temperature (at S7 in Figure 1) rises above the preset maximum
temperature limit, an alarm is generated within a period of 10 seconds. The ECL Comfort
display starts ashing and a connected external device is activated. These alarm indications
persist while the hot-water temperature remains above the maximum limit.
The alarm will go o when the hot-water temperature drops below the maximum limit
minus 5 K. After this temperature is detected, there is a delay of 0 – 28 seconds before the
alarm indications disappear (display stops ashing, external device is switched o). The
alarm function is illustrated in Figure 2.

I/O conguration
The ECA 86 module provides the ECL Comfort with:
4 Pt 1000 inputs
1 relay output.
For further information about inputs and outputs of the ECA 86 module, see page 5.
Installation
Requirements
The ECA 86 module is power supplied via the ECL Comfort system device bus. In order for
this bus to function properly, an outdoor temperature sensor must be connected to the
ECL Comfort.
When several ECL Comfort controllers are connected in a network, only one ECA 86
module can be present in the network and this module must be installed in the master ECL
Comfort controller. See the ECL Comfort User’s Guide (grey section, Installation and Mainte-
nance) for further information on ECL Comfort networking.

Installation ECA 86 Instructions
Hardware installation
Installing the module
1. You need an ECL Comfort socket
and the ECA 86 module. The cables
soldered to the ECA 86 module are
used to connect the module to the
system device bus.
2. Remove each of the 2 plastic aps
covering the openings in the socket by
inserting a screw driver in the groove.
Discard the aps.
3. Pass the cables through the opening in
the socket, as illustrated.
4. Proceed to insert the base of the
module and then gently press to click
the rest of the module into place.

Cabling
Figure 4. Terminals of the ECL Comfort
Figure 4 shows the terminals on the inside of the ECL Comfort socket, with the ECA 86
module installed. The terminals for the ECA 86 are placed at the bottom of the socket.
Therefore, it is most practical to begin by installing the cables for the ECA 86 and then pro-
ceed to install signal and other cables for the ECL Comfort controller itself.
As shown in Figure 4, the system device bus cables of the ECA 86 module must be con-
nected to terminals15 and 16.
The terminal assignments of the ECA 86 module are as follows:
Terminal Description Terminal Description
24, 26
Relay, NO (normally open)
function
30 Sensor S7
25, 26
Relay, NC (normally closed)
function
31 Sensor S8
32 Sensor S9
33 Sensor S10
34
For sensor connections, the permissible cable cross-section is 0.5 mm
2
. The maximum
cable length is 10 m.
Note:
The total length of the cabling for sensors and system device bus must not exceed 125 m.
If you are having diculty connecting several cables to terminal 34 (sensor common), use
one of the larger common terminals immediately above the sensor terminals.
For further details on installation, see the ECL Comfort User’s Guide (grey section,
Installation and Maintenance).

Installation ECA 86 Instructions
Software installation
New ECL Comfort controller
The following instructions apply when using an ECL Comfort controller that has not been
programmed by copying a system set-up from an ECL Card.
After completing the cabling and powering on the ECL Comfort controller, you are ready to
begin the software installation:
1. Open the lid on the front side of the controller.
2. Place the ECL Card with the yellow side facing you. This enables the controller to read
the ECL Card data.
The controller immediately starts copying the factory settings and heating system type
from the ECL Card.
After copying, the display will show the
heating system type that the controller is set
up to control.
After approximately 10 seconds, the display
changes to display line C.
Note that after this display appears, there is
a delay of 28 seconds before the ECL Com-
fort controller has detected the presence of
the ECA 86 module.
ECL Comfort controller already in use
When using an ECL Comfort controller that has already been in operation before the instal-
lation of the ECA 86 module, you need to copy a system set-up from a new ECL Card sup-
porting the ECA 86 module before the module is operational. See the ECL Comfort User’s
Guide for instructions.
The section “Verifying the installation on page 8 tells you how to ensure that the ECA 86
module is correctly installed.

Instructions ECA 86 Operation
Operations
Reading temperatures
The four temperature values measured by the ECA module are displayed as indicated in
the table – with the grey side of the ECL card facing you:
Sensor Circuit Display line Sensor Circuit Display line
S7 II C S9 II 2
S8 II 1 S10 II 3
To read the actual temperatures:
1. Ensure that the grey side of the ECL Card is facing you.
2. Press to select circuit II.
3. Use and to access the relevant display lines.
Setting the maximum temperature
The maximum temperature limit, which determines when an alarm is generated, is acces-
sible in the same display as the S7 temperature (see example above), at the lower, right-
hand corner.
The default value is 65 °C, the range is –20 - 110 °C.
To modify the maximum temperature setting:
1. Proceed as indicated above to select display line C.
2. Use and to adjust the maximum temperature setting.
Disabling alarms
To disable the alarm indication, proceed as indicated above to set the maximum tempera-
ture limit to its maximum value (110 °C).
This is an example of the display picture showing:
The actual temperature measured at sensor S7

Verifying the installation
1. Check that actual temperature values from all sensors connected to the ECA 86 module
are displayed.
2. Set the maximum temperature limit well below the actual temperature reading from
sensor S7. Verify that an alarm is generated within a period of 38 seconds (there is a
28 second delay before the new maximum temperature limit is eective, after this the
alarm is generated within 10 seconds).
If you are experiencing trouble, see the section “Error conditions” below.
When all is functioning properly, set the maximum temperature limit as required, and place
the ECL Card with the yellow side facing you, ready for normal operation.
Error conditions
This section provides support for locating and correcting error conditions that may arise
after the installation of the ECA 86 module.
Module not functioning
If the ECA 86 module is not properly installed or the module itself should prove faulty, no
temperature values will be displayed (display shows – – in line C, 1, 2 and 3 for circuit II).
The maximum temperature limit will be displayed because the default value is read from
the ECL Card.
To correct this error, you should check the connection of the system device bus to the
ECA 86 module (see page 5):
Is one of the cables disconnected?
Have the cables been switched?
Sensor error
A temperature sensor error may be caused by:
A disconnected sensor. The corresponding display will show – –.
A short-circuited sensor. The corresponding display will show – – –.
To locate the cause of the error, check the following:
Are the cables of the sensor in question connected correctly?
Do the cables show any sign of damage?
Is the error caused by a malfunctioning Pt 1000 sensor? Try replacing the sensor to see
whether the error condition persists.
Note:
If sensor S7 is disconnected or short-circuited, an alarm is generated. It is possible to
disable the alarm by setting the maximum temperature limit to 110 °C.
