If you have installed your VM as directed, following the site preparation requirements, and you maintain a clean
environment, in most cases, you will never need to clean the optical components. This procedure is for those instances
where optics cleaning may be necessary. Only perform an optics cleaning after contacting Technical Support. Technical
Support can help guide and give instructions. We strongly advise against performing this procedure without the guidance
and support of the technicians in Technical Support. Alternatively, you can pay and have a Service Technician perform this
procedure.
Cleaning optics is risky if not done properly. Scratched optical surfaces will require eventual replacement and are NOT
covered under warranty.
Class 3B Laser Radiation present when Cover open and Safety Interlock defeated. AVOID EXPOSURE TO BEAM.
Cleaning Optics Overview
1. Call Technical Support to confi rm diagnosis.
2. Ensure that the operating environment is controlled and meets specifi cations
3. Change the air inlet fi lter as directed. Higher environmental contaminants will mean you should change
your fi lter more often. If debris appears on your fi lter, you may consider cleaning your optics.
4. Call Technical Support before cleaning optics to prepare for procedure.
5. Optical cleaning kit:
· Foam tip swab
· Lens cleaning cloth
· Blower brush
· Lens cleaning video
6. Tools Required:
· #2 Phillips head screwdriver
· 5/32” Allen key
Care must be taken so as not to scratch any of the optical components. Like eyeglasses, dirt and contaminants will scratch
if gently removed. Use the Blower Brush to blow the dirt off, then swipe the brush across making sure to swipe in one
direction only. Scratched optics from over cleaning or improper cleaning and handling are not covered by warranty.
STEP ONE: Remove the Transport Cover
1. Turn off the VM and open the Operator’s door.

Optional - You may want to load an old or damaged plate to provide protection underneath your work area. Another Optional
method would be to lay down some paper toweling to ensure that a dropped screw is easily found and does not
scratch the internal drum surface.
2. Press the bottom of the transport locking mechanism and slide the transport assembly towards the middle of the VM.
3. Remove the two Philips head screws that attach the transport cover to the transport assembly. Carefully spread the
sides of the cover open and lift it from the transport assembly.
How to clean the VM Optics
STEP TWO: Clean the ND Filters
1. Using a 5/32” Allen key back out the stop screw for the ND fi lter arm so that the fi lter can swing out of the transport
casting toward the operator. ATTENTION: The arm can swing out fast and hit the top of the transport so be sure and
hold the arm before it swings out.
2. Inspect the ND fi lters (located on the swing out arm) for dirt. If there are no visible signs of dirt or contamination,
STOP. Swing the arm back into place and replace the Filter arm restrianing screw and transport cover. If dirt is
evident, continue.
Rubbing back and forth may cause debris to scratch the fi lters.
Use a fresh swab and wipe ONCE in one direction across the glass. If another wipe is needed then turn the swab
over and wipe again.
3. Using a swab, with a lens cloth wrapped around it, gently swab ONCE in one direction across the fi lter surface. Do
this on both sides. Turn swab over and repeat, swabbing ONCE in one direction. Dispose of the swab.
4. You will clean each of the four fi lter surfaces this way. The result should be clean surfaces with perhaps only a light
water mark on the surface. If not, use another clean swab and do it again.
5. Once cleaned with the cleaning cloth, use a clean dry swab and gently wipe away any remaining watermarks making
sure to wipe gently in one direction.
STEP THREE: Clean the Spin Motor Mirror
1. Inspect the spin motor mirror for dirt by rotating the mirror gently by hand. Depending on your model, there could be
two faces of a glass prism or a single 45-degree mirror. If there is no visible sign of dirt or contamination, STOP. If
dirt is evident, continue.
Rubbing back and forth may cause debris to scratch the mirror.
Use a fresh swab each time and swab once in one direction across the surface.
2. Using a swab, with a lens cloth wrapped around it, gently swab ONCE in one direction across the mirrors surface.
Turn swab over and repeat, swabbing ONCE in one direction.
3. Use a clean swab to gently swab ONCE in one direction across the fi lter surface and gently wipe away any remaining
watermarks.
4. Dispose of the swab
5. Do not attempt to remove or clean the lens assembly unless directed to by Technical Support. Experience has been
that the lens assembly is suffi ciently recessed and protected and cleaning is diffi cult.
Later units and units that have been fi eld retrofi tted may have a Lens Dust Cap Assembly mounted between the laser lens
and the ND Filter Arm. In this case, cleaning of the laser lens should NEVER be required.
STEP FOUR: Clean the Laser Lens
1. This lens is located on the right side across from the mirror prism and is recessed.
Using a swab, with a lens cloth wrapped around it, gently swab ONCE in one direction across the prism surface.
Turn swab over and repeat swabbing ONCE in one direction. Dispose of the swab.
2. Let all lens air dry briefl y.
STEP FIVE: Reassemble
1. Re-assemble in reverse order inserting the restraining screw and then replacing the transport cover. The bottom screw
on the transport cover can be tricky to align; angle it properly before screwing in. Be sure to return the transport
assembly back to the “home” position when fi nished.
2. Re-calibrate by printing a Density Group Test and fi nding the 58% tone to re-establish proper exposure.
3. Verify that the quality of the VM has been restored by imaging and processing a plate.
