1. GENERAL
This I&M Practice provides instructions for mounting
the Total Access SMART 19/23-Inch Polemount
Cabinet to a telephone utility pole using the ADTRAN
Polemount Kit (P/N 1192POLEL1). The kit provides
the brackets, supports, and fasteners for hoisting and
supporting the cabinet. The customer provides the
fasteners for mounting the cabinet to the utility pole.
NOTE
This installation requires adherence to all local
building codes, ordinances, and safety
precautions.
Revision History
This is the initial release of this document. Future
revisions will be explained in this paragraph.
Document Review
This document contains important pre-installation
information. Craft personnel should review the entire
document as part of installation planning.
Description
Polemount kit parts include the following components:
Mounting bracket with included lifting detail
Lifting detail
Bottom support brackets (2)
Appropriate screws and washers
Installation and Maintenance Practice
Polemount kit installation and cabinet mounting
requires the following tools and equipment:
1/2-inch drill and bit set including 5/8-inch
diameter long-shank bit for polemount drilling
Hoisting gear, 1/2-ton minimum including shackles
and cables
Torque wrench, 0-150 in. lbs. minimum
3/8-inch drive socket set
8-inch adjustable wrench
Customer Supplied Material
Because of local variations the customer is required to
provide the following installation parts:
1/2-inch diameter through-bolt of required length
Through-bolt washer and nut
Bottom support bracket lag screws (2)
Bottom support bracket lag screw washers (2)
2. INSTALLATION
After unpacking the kit inspect for damaged or missing
components. If damaged or missing components are
noted, file a claim with the carrier, then notify
ADTRAN. Refer to Warranty and Customer Service.
CAUTION
The cabinet assembly can weigh in excess of
270 pounds. This practice assumes that proper
safety certified lifting devices are on hand for
maneuvering and holding the cabinet safely in
position until securely mounted. Qualified
personnel should be assigned for this task.

Polemount Installation
The cabinet can be mounted on either the right or left
side panel.
NOTE
Cabinet illustrations are generic representa-
tions.
The polemount support structure must bear the weight
of a fully equipped cabinet. The size and type of pole
selected must meet local requirements. See Figure 1 for
polemount clearances.
.
Figure 1. Polemount Dimensions
1. At the installation site remove all packaging
material enclosing the cabinet.
2. The cabinet is bolted to two boards running across
the shipping pallet. Remove the screws securing
the two boards to the pallet.
3. Attach lifting details. Screwed into each side of the
cabinet is a group of three bolts and washers for
cabinet mounting. Remove these for reuse.
NOTE
Observe that one of the lifting details is also the
mounting bracket. Ensure the mounting
bracket is attached to the side of the cabinet
designated to be against the utility pole.
4. Following the illustration in Figure 2, attach the
lifting details to each side of the cabinet using the
bolt and washer groups. Ensure the sealing washers
are placed between the cabinet and the lifting
details. Tighten bolts to 110-130 in-lbs.

WARNING
Exercise caution and observe all safety
measures when lifting the cabinet out of the
shipping package and during installation. Do
not disconnect lifting gear until the cabinet is
fully secured and all mounting brackets and
support fasteners are tightened.
5. Using appropriately sized and tested hoisting gear,
attach a hoist cable to the two lifting details and lift
the cabinet free of the shipping pallet.
6. Remove hardware securing the pallet to the
cabinet.
CAUTION
Do not reuse shipping hardware. It is not
designed for cabinet mounting.
7. Identify which side of the cabinet will be mounted
to the pole and on that side attach (finger tight) the
slotted end of the two bottom support brackets.
Ensure the short end will point down after the
cabinet is upright and that the sealing washers are
against the bottom of the cabinet. See Figure 3.
Ensure a flat washer is on both sides of the support
bracket.

8. After determining the appropriate upper mounting
height of the cabinet, drill a 5/8-inch hole through
the pole for the top mounting bracket. The 1/2-inch
diameter through-bolt, nut, and washer are
customer supplied.
9. Insert the bolt through the pole then install the
washer and nut. Tighten the nut leaving the bolt
head approximately 2-inches from the pole.
10. Hoist and maneuver the cabinet so as to fit the bolt
head through the key-slot opening on the bracket.
See Figure 4.
Figure 4. Polemount Guide
11. When the cabinet is hanging on the bolt slot, the
nut on the other end can be tightened to snug the
bolt head to the mounting bracket. Do not torque at
this time.
12. Ensuring the cabinet is secure to the pole, relieve
tension on the hoist device but do not remove. This
allows positioning of the cabinet.
13. At the bottom of the cabinet insert a temporary
spacer between the cabinet and the pole so the
cabinet hangs plumb. The space between the
cabinet and pole should be the same from top to
bottom.
14. At the bottom of the cabinet, position and angle the
support brackets so the short ends are flush against
the pole. Ensure the cabinet is plumb then tighten
the bottom bolts (100-110 in.-lbs.) securing the
brackets to the cabinet.
15. Using an appropriate drill and bit, drill two pilot
holes for the bottom bracket lag screws.
16. With two 3/8-inch x 2-1/2-inch lag screws and
washers, attach the bottom support brackets to the
pole.
CAUTION
If bottom support bracket adjustment is
required, loosen the bottom support bracket
bolts before adjusting the cabinet. Failure to
loosen bolts will cause damage to the sealing
washers.
17. Tighten all fasteners to the proper torque. Remove
lifting gear from the cabinet.
18. If the unused lifting detail is to be removed, replace
the fasteners removed in step 3 ensuring the sealing
washer is installed next to the cabinet.
NOTE
All unused threaded openings in the cabinet
must have the designated fasteners inserted
and tightened to ensure an environmental seal.
Safety Lanyard Anchor
After the cabinet is secured to the pole and lifting
devices removed, the hoisting flange on the mounting
bracket serves as an anchor point for a personnel safety
lanyard. See Figure 2.
