Introduction
Welcome to the MAX308M Series which includes MAX308M and
MAX318M! This is a WiMAX subscriber station system comprised of an
outdoor unit (ODU) and an indoor unit (IDU).
The ODU such features as a high gain antenna and advanced IP
networking while the IDU provides power to it. It also provides
connectivity to the devices in your home or office at the same time.
How It Works
The ODU connects to the WiMAX network while the IDU is the
management point between the WiMAX network (via the ODU) and your
computer/local area network.
Firmware Caution: When your ISP upgrades your device’s
firmware, all of the LEDs will flash simultaneously. Do not
turn off or unplug the device until they stop blinking.

Minimum System Requirements
• 64 MB RAM
• 20 MB of available hard disk space
• One available 10/100Mbps Ethernet port
• Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2 and higher, or a compatible browser
Installing the Outdoor Unit
Before you begin, ensure that you are familiar with all safety
and accident prevention procedures necessary for working at
heights and with electricity.
Do NOT install the ODU during a lightning storm.
Choose a Location
The ODU can be mounted on a pole or antenna mast or on a wall using
the supplied bracket mount.
• Choose a mounting point that is sturdy enough to hold the ODU,
even during high winds.
• When choosing a location to install the ODU, remember that the
ODU’s front panel should point towards your service provider’s
nearest base station. If you are not sure where this is, consult your
service provider.
• You do not need to be able to see the base station from the ODU’s
position; there may be objects such as trees and buildings in the
way without signal loss. However, if you experience difficulties with
6
signal reception, a Line of Sight (LoS) connection may produce
better results.
• It is suggested that you transport the ODU to its intended
installation location in its original protective packaging.
Connecting the CAT5 Ethernet Cable
Lay the CAT5 Ethernet cable (not included) from your intended IDU
location to your intended ODU location.
• If you use cable extenders to cover a greater distance, signal
attenuation may result.
• If you intend to use cable ties or other methods to secure the cable,
do not tighten them yet. Leave the cable loose until you have
finished installing the IDU and ODU.
To connect the CAT5 Ethernet cable:
1. Separate the body, claw and nut pieces into their individual
components.
2. Feed one end of the CAT5 Ethernet cable through the nut.
ENGLISH
7
3. Open the claw then buckle it tightly to the cable.
4. Slip the body over the cable then connect the end of the cable to the
ODU.
5. Gently twist the body into the ODU behind the attached cable
connector.
8
6. Tightly secure the CAT5 Ethernet cable connector and the body and
claw with the nut.
Mount the ODU
See the installation instructions that came with your bracket mount for
information on mounting the ODU correctly.
To avoid the danger of rainwater entering the device, install the ODU
vertically (with a 90 degree angle to the ground).
Pole Mounting
You can install the WiMAX Modem vertically with a +15, 0, or -15 degree
angle relative to the pole. The connectors should be pointed down. The
following steps show you how to install it with a 0 degree angle.

to the U blot on a pole or mast. Use a wrench to tighten the nuts with
the U blot.

1. Use the M3 screw to secure the ground cable and the ground hole on
the WiMAX Modem’s rear panel as shown.

Setting Up Your Modem
This section shows you how to set up your WiMAX Modem.
You will need a valid WiMAX account to connect to the Internet. For
more information, contact your service provider.
1. Connect the power cord to the IDU. The ON LED shines a steady
green once connected.

2. Connect a CAT5 Ethernet cable (not included) to the IDU. The other
end should already be connected to the ODU, as described in the
previous section. The CONNECT LED shines a steady green once
the IDU is connected to both a power source and the ODU.
3. Connect the included Ethernet cable from the computer to the power
block.
Connecting to the Internet
This section shows you how to connect to the Internet with your device.
1. Open a web browser.
• If your service provider’s WiMAX login page appears instead of
your default Home page then all you need to do is enter the login
information that you were given and follow the on-screen
instructions. The WiMAX Modem should then automatically update
itself with the settings that you need to connect to the Internet.
• If your service provider’s WiMAX login page does not appear, then
you may need to use the ZyXEL Connection Wizard (see page 13).
ZyXEL Connection Wizard
This section shows you how to manually configure the WiMAX Modem.
1. Open a web browser and go to http://192.168.1.1.
14
2. Enter the default Username (admin) and Password (1234), and then
click Login.
The main Status screen displays.
3. Click Setup Wizard.
ENGLISH
15
4. When the Setup Wizard opens, review the steps you will take to
configure your WiMAX Modem then click Next to continue.
The LAN and WiMAX settings required by the Setup Wizard should be
provided by your Internet Service Provider.
5. LAN Settings: Configure the network settings that allow devices
connected to your WiMAX Modem to get on the Internet or connect to
other network services. Then Click Next.
16
6. WiMAX Frequency Settings: Configure the radio frequency on
which your WiMAX Modem sends and receives data. Then click Next.
7. WiMAX Authentication Settings: Configure how your device logs
into the service provider’s network. Then click Next.

8. In the Setup Complete screen, click Save.
Troubleshooting
Use this section if you have problems with your WiMAX Modem.
I cannot access the WiMAX Modem from my LAN:
• Check the cable connection between the WiMAX Modem and your
computer or switch and ensure that both ends are secure.
• Make sure your computer has gotten an IP address (default is
192.168.1.x) in the same network as the WiMAX Modem’s LAN. If
not, you can manually configure your computer by clicking Start >
Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area
Connection > Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
• Ping the WiMAX Modem from a LAN computer: Click Start > (All)
Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. When the
18
command prompt window opens, type "ping 192.168.1.1” without
quotes and press [ENTER]. The WiMAX Modem should reply.
• Press and hold the Reset button for about 10 seconds to reset the
device to its default factory settings, then try to connect to the IP
192.168.1.1 once more.
I cannot log into the Web Configurator:
• Check to see if anyone else is currently logged into the WiMAX
Modem. If so, you may not be able to log in until they log out first.
• If you’ve forgotten the WiMAX Modem’s user name, password, or IP
address press and hold the Reset button for about 10 seconds. The
WiMAX Modem returns to the factory default settings listed on the
first page of this book.
See the User’s Guide on the CD or www.zyxel.com for more information.
