modem may be used at this time.

not apply, if you are using an AirCard 595 PC Card or a wireless
device that is built into your computer.

Onceinstalledandconfigured,theAirCardUSBmodemcan
connecttotheCDMAnetworkautomatically.Youjustinsert
theAirCardUSBmodem,allowWatchertoautolaunchand
authenticateyouraccountonthenetwork,thenlaunchyour
Internetbrowser(whichyoucanalsoconfigureinWatcherto
launchautomatically)—you’reonline!
Alternatively,you
canmakeahighspeeddataconnection
withoutrunningWatchersimplybylaunchingwhatever
applicationyouwanttouse(suchasyourwebbrowseror

features,dependingonyourserviceproviderandaccount:

ratesupto3.1 Mbps(downlinkfromthenetwork)and
1.8 Mbps
(uplinktothenetwork).Averagedataratesare
roughly600–1300 Kbps(downlinkfromthenetwork)and
300–400 Kbps(uplinktothenetwork).Actualspeed
dependsonthenetworkconditions.
1xEVDORev.0supportsInternetconnectionswithdata
ratesupto2.4 Mbps(downlinkfromthenetwork)and
153 Kbps(uplinktothe
network).Averagedataratesare
roughly400700 Kbps(downlinkfromthenetwork)and

QNC (QuickNetConnect),providesasimplifiedwayto
dialintoanInternetconnection(usingcircuitswitched
data)where3G(1xEVDOor1X)high
speedpacket
serviceisnotavailable.
SMS (ShortMessageService),allowsyoutosendand
receiveshorttextmessagesusingtheAirCardUSB
modem.

TheAirCardUSBmodemprovidesyourcomputerwitha
connectiontotheCDMAwirelessnetwork.
TheAirCardUSBmodemfitsintoaUSBslotavailableonmost
notebookanddesktopPCs.
EveryCDMAnetworkoperatesononeofthreeradio
frequencybands.Asadualbandproduct,theAirCardUSB
modemoperates
ontwoofthesebands(seepage 32),
providingawidecoveragearea.
The AirCard USB modem drivers and
enabling software
Requiredtocontrol,monitor,andmanageyourwireless
connections,thisincludestheWatcherapplication.
TheAirCardUSBmodemcomeswithaCDcontainingthis
software:
WatcherapplicationthatyouusetomanagetheAirCard
USBmodemandmonitoryourconnections.Forstepby
stepinstructionstoaccessfeaturesofWatcher,use
the
application’sonlinehelp.
ThedevicedriversoftwarethatenablestheAirCardUSB
modemtoworkwithyourcomputersoperatingsystem.
Thedriverandapplicationsoftwaremustbeinstalledbefore
youinserttheAirCardUSBmodemforthefirsttime.Detailed

A CDMA service provider account
CompaniesthatoperateCDMAnetworksandprovideaccess
tothesenetworksarecalledserviceproviders.Tousethe
AirCardUSBmodem,youmusthaveanaccountwitha
CDMAserviceprovider.
Note: You can use the Lock
Code feature to prevent others
from using your account should
your AirCard USB modem be
stolen. For information on this
feature, see the online help.
Eachserviceproviderhasitsownpricingoptions.Theremay
beflatrateaccounts,whichprovideyouamaximumnumber
ofminutesofnetworkusageforafixedmonthlyfee.There
maybeaccountsforwhichyouarechargedfornetworkusage
bytheminuteorbytheamountofdata
transmitted.
Youraccountmayincludeavarietyofotherservicessuchas
SMSmessaging.
EachAirCardUSBmodemhasbeenprovisionedatthefactory
forusewithaparticularserviceprovider.Thissetsthe
AirCardUSBmodemtouseparticularradiochannelsand
enablesservicesspecificforthatprovider.
Theprocessof
settingupyouraccountiscalledactivation.
Activationinvolvesactionbytheserviceproviderandconfigu
rationoftheAirCardUSBmodem.

Thisistheworldwideinfrastructureprovidingtheradio
coveragethatallowsyoutostayconnected.Madeupofradio
towersandavarietyofnetworkswitches,routers,andservers,
thenetworkisaninterconnectionofmanyserviceproviders.
Note: Most service providers
have coverage maps on their
web sites.
ThereareCDMAnetworksthatoperateinthefrequencybands
supportedbytheAirCardUSBmodemthroughoutNorth
AmericaandpartsofLatinAmerica,Asia,andNewZealand.
However,each serviceprovideroperatesanetworkthatcovers
alimitedgeographicalareawithintheoverallCDMAcoverage
area.
Note: The fee for service is
usually higher when you are
roaming (connecting to a
network other than the one
belonging to your service
provider).
Mostserviceprovidershaveroamingagreementswithother
serviceproviders,sothattheycanofferserviceoutsideof the
coverageareaoftheirownnetworks.Forexample,assuming
youliveinVancouverandtravelfrequentlytoSeattle,youcan
obtainanaccountwithaVancouverserviceproviderthathasa
roamingagreementwithaserviceproviderinSeattle.You
wouldthenhavelocalserviceinVancouver,androaming
serviceinSeattle.

Account activation and
configuration
Beforeyoucan beginusingtheAirCardUSBmodem,you
must:
1. InstalltheAirCardUSBmodemenablingsoftwareand
driver.
2. ActivateanaccountandconfiguretheAirCardUSB
modemtouseyouraccount(unlesstheAirCardUSB
modemhasbeenpreactivated).
Thissectionprovidesanoverviewofthisprocess.
The AirCard 595U software
TheAirCardUSBmodemcomeswiththissoftware:
WatcherapplicationthatyouusetomanagetheAirCard
USBmodemandmonitoryourconnections
Thedriversoftwarethatprovidestheinterfacebetween
theAirCardUSBmodemandyourWindowsoperating
system
TheWatchersoftwaremustbeinstalledbeforeyouinsertthe
AirCard
USBmodemforthefirsttime.Detailedinstructions

Account activation and
configuration
TousetheAirCardUSBmodem,youmusthaveanaccount
withaCDMAserviceprovider.Theprocessofsettingupan
accountiscalledactivation.
IfyoupurchasedtheAirCardUSBmodemdirectlyfroma
serviceprovider,youmayalreadyhaveanaccount;your
AirCardUSBmodemmaybepre
activated.

Note: Do not insert the AirCard USB modem into your USB slot
before installing the software.
Thebasicstepsare:
1. Inserttheremovablebatteryintothemodem,andcharge
thebattery.
2. InserttheAirCard 595UinstallationCDintoyourCD
ROMdriveandinstallWatcher.
3. InserttheAirCardUSBmodemintotheUSBslot (page 18 )
toinstalltheAirCardUSBmodemdrivers.
4. IftheAirCardUSBmodem
hasnotbeenpreactivated,use
theActivationWizardtoconfiguretheAirCardUSB
modem(asdescribedinActivation”onpage 20).

into the modem
Beforeyouuse theAirCardUSBmodemforthefirsttime,you
mustinsertthebatteryintothemodem,andchargethe
battery.
ToinsertthebatteryintotheAirCardUSBmodem:
1. Slidethefrontpaneloff theAirCardUSBmodem.
2. Holdingthebatterysothatthesidethathastwo
white
arrowsfacesyou,insertthebatteryintotheAirCardUSB
modem.
3. SlidethefrontpanelontotheAirCardUSBmodem,until
thepanelclicksinplace.
Charging the battery
Beforeyouuse theAirCardUSBmodemforthefirsttime,you
mustchargethemodem’sbattery:
1. EnsureyouhaveinsertedthebatteryintotheAirCardUSB
modem(describedabove).
2. InserttheAirCardUSBmodemintoyourcomputersUSB
slot.Alternatively,youcanattachthedockingstationto
yourcomputers
USBslot,andinserttheAirCardUSB
modemintothedockingstation.

c)Installthefileonyourcomputer,thenrerunthesoftware
installation.
5. Usethe
NextandBackbuttonstonavigatethroughthe
wizardnotingthefollowing:
· Toproceedwiththeinstallation,youmustclick

toindicateyouraccep
tanceofthetermsoftheli censeagreement.
· Usethedefaultsettingsforthe
Destination Folderunless
youhavespecialrequirementsandanadvancedunder

6. Whenyouarenotifiedthattheinstallationiscomplete,
click
Finish.
Note: Do not forcefully insert the
AirCard USB modem. This may
damage the connector pins.

driversfortheUSBmodem.

2. AdjusttheUSBconnectortothedesiredangle.
TheUSBconnectorisadjustabletoa90,135,or180
degree
angle.
3. GentlyinsertthemodemintotheUSBslot.Alternatively,
youcanat tach thedockingstationtoyourcomputersUSB
slot,andinserttheAirCardUSBmodemintothedocking
station.
