modem may be used at this time.

Onceinstalledandconfigured,theAirCardUSBmodemcan

connecttotheCDMAnetworkautomatically.Youjustinsert

theAirCardUSBmodem,allowWatchertoautolaunchand

authenticateyouraccountonthenetwork,thenlaunchyour

Internetbrowser(whichyoucanalsoconfigureinWatcherto

launchautomatically)—you’reonline!

Alternatively,you

canmakeahigh‐speeddataconnection

withoutrunningWatcher—simplybylaunchingwhatever

applicationyouwanttouse(suchasyourwebbrowseror

e‐mailapplication).Prerequisites:youmusthavepreviously

selected,inWatcher,“

Always-on”for thehigh‐speedconnection

and(subjecttofeature availability)“

features,dependingonyourserviceproviderandaccount:

• 1x‐EVDORev.AsupportsInternetconnectionswithdata

ratesupto3.1 Mbps(downlinkfromthenetwork)and

1.8 Mbps

(uplinktothenetwork).Averagedataratesare

roughly600–1300 Kbps(downlinkfromthenetwork)and

300–400 Kbps(uplinktothenetwork).Actualspeed 

dependsonthenetworkconditions.

• 1x‐EVDORev.0supportsInternetconnectionswithdata

ratesupto2.4 Mbps(downlinkfromthenetwork)and

153 Kbps(uplinktothe 

network).Averagedataratesare

roughly400‐700 Kbps(downlinkfromthenetwork)and

connectiontotheCDMAwirelessnetwork.

TheAirCardUSBmodemfitsintoaUSBslotavailableonmost

notebookanddesktopPCs.

EveryCDMAnetworkoperatesononeofthreeradio

frequencybands.Asadual‐bandproduct,theAirCardUSB

modemoperates

ontwoofthesebands(seepage 32),

providingawidecoveragearea.

The AirCard USB modem drivers and

enabling software

Requiredtocontrol,monitor,andmanageyourwireless

connections,thisincludestheWatcherapplication.

TheAirCardUSBmodemcomeswithaCDcontainingthis

software:

• WatcherapplicationthatyouusetomanagetheAirCard

USBmodemandmonitoryourconnections.Forstep‐by‐

stepinstructionstoaccessfeaturesofWatcher,use

the

application’sonlinehelp.

• ThedevicedriversoftwarethatenablestheAirCardUSB

modemtoworkwithyourcomputer’soperatingsystem.

Thedriverandapplicationsoftwaremustbeinstalledbefore

A CDMA service provider account

CompaniesthatoperateCDMAnetworksandprovideaccess

tothesenetworksarecalledserviceproviders.Tousethe

AirCardUSBmodem,youmusthaveanaccountwitha

CDMAserviceprovider.

Note: You can use the Lock

Code feature to prevent others

from using your account should

your AirCard USB modem be

stolen. For information on this

feature, see the online help.

Eachserviceproviderhasitsownpricingoptions.Theremay

beflatrateaccounts,whichprovideyouamaximumnumber

ofminutesofnetworkusageforafixedmonthlyfee.There

maybeaccountsforwhichyouarechargedfornetworkusage

bytheminuteorbytheamountofdata

transmitted.

Youraccountmayincludeavarietyofotherservicessuchas

SMSmessaging.

EachAirCardUSBmodemhasbeenprovisionedatthefactory

forusewithaparticularserviceprovider.Thissetsthe

AirCardUSBmodemtouseparticularradiochannelsand

enablesservicesspecificforthatprovider.

Theprocessof

settingupyouraccountiscalledactivation.

Activationinvolvesactionbytheserviceproviderandconfigu‐

rationoftheAirCardUSBmodem.

Thisistheworldwideinfrastructureprovidingtheradio

coveragethatallowsyoutostayconnected.Madeupofradio

towersandavarietyofnetworkswitches,routers,andservers,

thenetworkisaninterconnectionofmanyserviceproviders.

Note: Most service providers

have coverage maps on their

web sites.

ThereareCDMAnetworksthatoperateinthefrequencybands

supportedbytheAirCardUSBmodemthroughoutNorth

AmericaandpartsofLatinAmerica,Asia,andNewZealand.

However,each serviceprovideroperatesanetworkthatcovers

alimitedgeographicalareawithintheoverallCDMAcoverage

area.

Note: The fee for service is

usually higher when you are

roaming (connecting to a

network other than the one

belonging to your service

provider).

Mostserviceprovidershave“roaming”agreementswithother

serviceproviders,sothattheycanofferserviceoutsideof the

coverageareaoftheirownnetworks.Forexample,assuming

youliveinVancouverandtravelfrequentlytoSeattle,youcan

obtainanaccountwithaVancouverserviceproviderthathasa



roamingagreementwithaserviceproviderinSeattle.You

wouldthenhavelocalserviceinVancouver,androaming

serviceinSeattle.

Beforeyoucan beginusingtheAirCardUSBmodem,you

must:

1. InstalltheAirCardUSBmodemenablingsoftwareand

driver.

2. ActivateanaccountandconfiguretheAirCardUSB

modemtouseyouraccount(unlesstheAirCardUSB

modemhasbeenpre‐activated).

Thissectionprovidesanoverviewofthisprocess.

The AirCard 595U software

TheAirCardUSBmodemcomeswiththissoftware:

• WatcherapplicationthatyouusetomanagetheAirCard

USBmodemandmonitoryourconnections

• Thedriversoftwarethatprovidestheinterfacebetween

theAirCardUSBmodemandyourWindowsoperating

system

TheWatchersoftwaremustbeinstalledbeforeyouinsertthe

AirCard

USBmodemforthefirsttime.Detailedinstructions

areprovidedin“Installation”onpage 15.

Account activation and

configuration

TousetheAirCardUSBmodem,youmusthaveanaccount

withaCDMAserviceprovider.Theprocessofsettingupan

accountiscalledactivation.

IfyoupurchasedtheAirCardUSBmodemdirectlyfroma

serviceprovider,youmayalreadyhaveanaccount;your

AirCardUSBmodemmaybepre

‐activated.

Otherwise,runWatcherandtheActivationWizard,which

ConfiguringtheAirCardUSBmodeminvolvessettingthe

phonenumberassignedbyyourserviceproviderandmay

involveenteringothernetworkparametersandsettingssuch

asausernameandpasswordtoaccessservices.

Yourserviceproviderneedstoknow:

• Thebillinginformationtousetocollectpaymentforyour

network

usage.

• TheESN (ElectronicSerialNumber)orMEID(Mobile

EquipmentIdentifier)assignedtoyourAirCardUSB

modemduringthemanufacturingprocess.(TheESNor

MEIDisprintedonalabelontheAirCardUSBmodem

andcanbedisplayedinWatcher.)Thisnumberisusedto

helpauthenticateyouraccountwhen

youconnectfor

service.

Yourequirefromyourserviceprovider:

• Anactivationcodethatgivesyouaccesstoconfigurethe

account.

• AphonenumberforyourAirCardUSBmodem.

• Additionalinformationspecifictoyourserviceprovider

suchas:

· AuserID(username)andpasswordtoauthenticateyour

networkconnection.

· ASID

(SystemIDentifier)thatidentifiesyourhome

networkareaandisusedtogetherwithyourphone

numbertodetermineifyouare“home”or“roaming”.

Thischapterguidesyouthroughthestepsnecessarytoinstall

theAirCardUSBmodemonanotebookordesktopcomputer.

Note: Do not insert the AirCard USB modem into your USB slot

before installing the software.

Thebasicstepsare:

1. Inserttheremovablebatteryintothemodem,andcharge

thebattery.

2. InserttheAirCard 595UinstallationCDintoyourCD‐

ROMdriveandinstallWatcher.

3. InserttheAirCardUSBmodemintotheUSBslot (page 18 )

toinstalltheAirCardUSBmodemdrivers.

4. IftheAirCardUSBmodem

hasnotbeenpre‐activated,use

theActivationWizardtoconfiguretheAirCardUSB

modem(asdescribedin“Activation”onpage 20).

Beforeyoubegin theinstallationprocess,ensureyourPCis

runningasupportedoperatingsystemandmeetsthe

hardwarerequirementsdescribedbelow.

• WindowsVista(forthe finalcommercialreleases

Inserting the removable battery

into the modem

Beforeyouuse theAirCardUSBmodemforthefirsttime,you

mustinsertthebatteryintothemodem,andchargethe

battery.

ToinsertthebatteryintotheAirCardUSBmodem:

1. Slidethefrontpaneloff theAirCardUSBmodem.

2. Holdingthebatterysothatthesidethathastwo

white

arrowsfacesyou,insertthebatteryintotheAirCardUSB

modem.

3. SlidethefrontpanelontotheAirCardUSBmodem,until

thepanelclicksinplace.

Charging the battery

Beforeyouuse theAirCardUSBmodemforthefirsttime,you

mustchargethemodem’sbattery:

1. EnsureyouhaveinsertedthebatteryintotheAirCardUSB

modem(describedabove).

2. InserttheAirCardUSBmodemintoyourcomputer’sUSB

slot.Alternatively,youcanattachthedockingstationto

yourcomputer’s

USBslot,andinserttheAirCardUSB

modemintothedockingstation.

administrative privileges to install

the AirCard USB modem

software. Users of Windows XP

may require administrative privi-

leges, depending on the XP

installation.

1. IftheinstallationCDisnotalreadyinyourCD‐ROM

drive,insertit.TheCDshouldautostartanddisplaya

menu.

IftheCDdoesnotautostart,select

Start > Runandenter

d:\launch.exewheredisthedriveletterofyourCD‐ROM

drive.

2. FromtheCDstartupwindow,select

Install Watcher software

tolaunchtheInstallShield

Wizard.

3. Ifthe

Open With...windowappears,canceltheinstallation

(yourcomputerismissing somefilesrequiredforthe

installation).Searchfor

Instmsiw.exe(ifyou’rerunning

Windows2000)amongthedownloadsat

www.microsoft.com.Installthefileonyourcomputer, 

thenreruntheAirCardUSBmodemsoftwareinstallation.

4. Ifthe

Ikernel Application Errorwindowappears:

a)Canceltheinstallation.

b)Downloadthefile:

http://support.installshield.com/kb/files/Q108312/

ikernelupdate.exe.

c)Installthefileonyourcomputer,thenrerunthesoftware

installation.

5. Usethe

NextandBackbuttonstonavigatethroughthe

wizardnotingthefollowing:

· Toproceedwiththeinstallation,youmustclick

I accept

the terms in the license agreement

toindicateyouraccep‐

tanceofthetermsoftheli censeagreement.

· Usethedefaultsettingsforthe

Destination Folderunless

youhavespecialrequirementsandanadvancedunder‐

standingofPCconfiguration.(TheDestinationFolder

dictateswherethesoftwareisinstalled.)

6. Whenyouarenotifiedthattheinstallationiscomplete,

click

Finish.

Note: Do not forcefully insert the

AirCard USB modem. This may

damage the connector pins.

7. InserttheAirCardUSBmodemintoyourUSB

slot (describedinthefollowingsection).Thisinstallsthe

driversfortheUSBmodem.

USB modem insertion and

removal

Inserting the AirCard USB modem

ToinserttheAirCardUSBmodemintoacomputer:

1. Slidetheleveronthebottomofthemodem,inthe

directionindicatedbythetriangle,toreleasethe modemʹs

USBconnector.

2. AdjusttheUSBconnectortothedesiredangle.

TheUSBconnectorisadjustabletoa90,135,or180‐

degree

angle.

3. GentlyinsertthemodemintotheUSBslot.Alternatively,

youcanat tach thedockingstationtoyourcomputer’sUSB

slot,andinserttheAirCardUSBmodemintothedocking

station.

WhenyouinserttheAirCardUSBmodem,thefollowing

shouldoccur:

• Ifsoundeffectsare enabled,thePCbeeps.

• ThePC Cardiconappearsinthesystemtray,ifitisnot

alreadydisplayedforanothercard,(andunlessthefeature

hasbeendisabled).

• Watcherlaunches(unlesstheautolaunchfeaturehas

been

disabled).

TheAirCardUSBmodemispoweredassoonasyouins ertit.

Removing the AirCard USB modem

ToremovetheAirCardUSBmodem:

1. CloseWatcherifitisopen.

2. ClickthePC Cardiconinthesystemtraytodisplaythe

optiontostopthedevice.

3. Clicktheentryfor“

NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller”or

“

Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller“.

4. Ifadialogboxappearsnotifyingyouthatitissafeto

removethecard,click

OK.

5. Pullthemodemoutoftheslotbygrippingbothsidesof

themodemandpullingthemodemstraightout.

ThefinalsteptomakingtheAirCardUSBmodemoperational

TheprocessofactivationconfiguresyourAirCardUSB

modemwiththerequiredaccountparameters(phonenumber,

username,password,etc.).

Ifyoupurchasedapre‐activatedAirCardUSBmodem,this

stepis

notnecessary.Oncetheapplicationsoftwareanddriver

areinstalled,theAirCardUSBmodemisreadyforuse.

Otherwise,youmustusetheActivationWizardtoactivateand

configureyouraccount.

Activation Wizard

TheActivationWizardwalksyouthroughtheprocessof

configuringanaccount.Theprocessandoptionsvarybasedon

theserviceprovider.

Thissectionisaguideonly.ConsulttheQuickStartGuide,

andfollowthedirectionsonscreenandinstructionsgivenby

yourserviceproviderrepresentative.

Toactivateanaccountand

configureyourAirCardUSB

modemforuse:

IfyourAirCardUSBmodemdoesnothaveanactivated

account,andWatcherhasstartedautomatically,thenthe

ActivationWizardshouldstartautomatically.Ifthisdoesnot

happen:

1. EnsureWatcherisrunning.Ifitisnot,double‐clickthe

Watchericononyourdesktop.

2. StarttheActivationWizard:selectTOOLS >

Activation Wizard.

TobeginactivationoftheAirCardUSBmodem,clickNext.
