.TheSierraWirelessmodemcan
transmitsignalsthatcouldinterferewiththisequipment.
DonotoperatetheSierraWirelessmodeminanyaircraft,
whethertheaircraftisonthegroundorinflight.Inaircraft,the
SierraWirelessmodemMUSTBEPOWEREDOFF.When
operating,theSierraWirelessmodemcan
transmitsignalsthat
couldinterferewithvariousonboardsystems.
Note: Some airlines may permit the use of cellular phones while the
aircraft is on the ground and the door is open. The Sierra Wireless
modem may be used at this time.
Thedriveroroperatorofanyvehicleshouldnotoperatethe
SierraWirelessmodemwhileincontrolofavehicle.Doingso
willdetractfromthedriveroroperatorʹscontrolandoperation

Onceinstalledandconfigured,theAirCardcanconnecttothe
CDMAnetworkautomatically.YoujustinserttheAirCard,
allowWatchertoautolaunchandauthenticateyouraccounton
thenetwork,thenlaunchyourInternetbrowser—you’re
online!
Asamodem,theAirCardalsoallowsyoutodialupanyother
modem(suchas
acorporateserver).
CDMA 3G services
TheAirCardoperatesoveratypeofwirelessnetworkcalled
CDMA (Code DivisionMultipleAccess).
CDMA 3Gtechnologyprovidesavarietyofconnectivity
features,dependingonyourservic eproviderand account:
1xEVDOsupportsInternetconnectionswithdataratesup
to2.4 Mbps(downlinkfromthenetwork)and153.6 kbps
(uplinktothenetwork).
Averagedataratesareroughly
700 kbps(downlinkfromthenetwork)and153.6 kbps
(uplinktothenetwork).Actualspeeddependsonthe
networkconditions.
1XsupportsInternetconnectionswithdataratesupto
153.6 kbps(downlinkfromthenetwork)and76.8 kbps
(uplinktothenetwork).Actualspeeddependsonthe
networkconditions.
Oncetheconnectionisestablished,youcanopenyourbrowser
andconnecttoanywebsitethatisaccessiblethroughthe
Internet,oraccessotherInternetservices(suchasemail).
Theconnectionis“active”whendatatransmissionis
occurring.Ifdatatransmissionstopsforaperiodoftime
(determinedby
thenetwork),theconnectionbecomes

Circuitswitched(dialup)data,usingtheearlierCDMA
IS95specification,supportsdataconnectionstoanydial
inserviceatratesupto14.4 kbps.
QNC (QuickNetConnect),providesasimplifiedwayto
dialintoanInternetconnection(usingcircuit
switched
data)where3G(1xEVDOor1X)highspeedpacket
serviceisnotavailable.
SMS (ShortMessageService),allowsyoutosendand

TheAirCardfitsintoastand ardType IIPC Cardslotavailable
onmostnotebookPCs.
EveryCDMAnetworkoperatesononeofthreeradio
frequencybands.Asadualbandproduct,theAirCard
operatesontwoofthesebands(seepage 33
),providingawide
coveragearea.
The AirCard drivers and enabling
software
Requiredtocontrol,monitor,andmanageyourwireless
connections,thisincludestheWatcherapplication,andthe
NetworkAdapterManagerforselecting yournetwork
connectioncard.
TheAirCardcomeswitha CDcontainingthissoftware:
WatcherapplicationthatyouusetomanagetheAirCard
andmonitoryourconnections.Forstepbystep
instruc
tionstoaccessfeaturesofWatcher,usetheapplication’s
onlinehelp.
NetworkAdapterManagerapplicationthatallowsyouto
switchbetweentheAirCardandnetworkcards.This
applicationalsohandlestheautolaunchofWatcherwhen

CompaniesthatoperateCDMAnetworksandprovideaccess

AirCard,youmusthaveanaccountwithaCDMAservice

Eachserviceproviderhasitsownpricingoptions.Theremay
beflatrateaccounts,whichprovideyouamaximumnumber
ofminutesofnetworkusageforafixedmonthlyfee.There
maybeaccountsforwhichyouarechargedfornetworkusage
bytheminuteorbytheamountofdata
transmitted.
Youraccountmayincludeavarietyofotherservicessuchas
SMSmessaging.
EachAirCardhasbeenprovisionedatthefactoryforusewith
aparticularserviceprovider.ThissetstheAirCardtouse
particularradiochannelsandenablesservicesspecificforthat
provider.
Theprocessofsettingupyouraccount
iscalledactivation.
Activationinvolves actionbytheserviceproviderandconfigu
rationoftheAirCard.

Thisistheworldwideinfrastructureprovidingtheradio
coveragethatallowsyoutostayconnected.Madeupofradio
towersanda varietyofnetworkswitches,routers,andservers,
thenetworkisaninterconnectionofmanyserviceproviders.
Note: Most service providers
have coverage maps on their
web sites.
ThereareCDMAnetworksthatoperateinthefrequencybands
supportedbytheAirCardthroughoutNorthAmericaand
partsofLatinAmerica,Asia,NewZealand,andAustralia.
However,eachserviceprovideroperatesanetworkthatcovers
alimitedgeographicalareawithintheoverallCDMAcoverage
area.
Note: The fee for service is
usually higher when you are
roaming (connecting to a
network other than the one
belonging to your service
provider).
Mostserviceprovidershaveroamingagreementswithother
serviceproviders,sothattheycanofferserviceoutsideofthe
coverageareaoftheirownnetworks.Forexample,assuming
youliveinVancouverandtravelfrequentlytoSeattle,youcan
obtainanaccountwithaVancouverserviceproviderthathasa
roamingagreementwithaserviceproviderinSeattle.You
wouldthenhavelocalserviceinVancouver,androaming
serviceinSeattle.

Account activation and

Beforeyoucan beginusingtheAirCard,youmust:
1. InstalltheAirCardenablingsoftwareanddriver.
2. ActivateanaccountandconfiguretheAirCardtouseyour
account(unlesstheAirCardhasbeenpreactivated).

TheAirCardcomeswiththissoftware:
WatcherapplicationthatyouusetomanagetheAirCard
andmonitoryourconnections
NetworkAdapterManagerapplicationthatallowsyouto
switchbetweentheAirCardandnetworkcards
Thedriversoftwarethatprovidestheinterfacebetween
theAirCardandyourWindowsoperatingsystem
TheWatcher
software(andtheNetworkAdapterManager)
mustbeinstalledbeforeyouinserttheAirCardforthefirst
time.Detailedinstructionsareprovidedin“Installation”on
page 15.
Account activation and

TousetheAirCard,youmusthaveanaccountwithaCDMA
serviceprovider.Theprocessofsettingupanaccountiscalled
activation.
IfyoupurchasedtheAirCarddirectlyfromaserviceprovider,
youmayalreadyhaveanaccount;yourAirCardmaybepre
activated.
Otherwise,runWatcherandthe
ActivationWizard,which
guidesyouthroughtheactivationandconfigurationprocess.

Inserting the AirCard
Removing the AirCard Thischapterguidesyouthroughthestepsnecessarytoinstall
theAirCardonanotebookPC.
Note: Do not insert the AirCard into your PC Card slot before
installing the software.
Thebasicstepsare:
1. InserttheAirCard 580installationCDintoyourCDROM
driveandinstallWatcherandtheNetworkAdapterMan
ager.
2. InserttheAirCardintothePC Cardslot (page 18)toinstall
theAirCarddrivers.
3. IftheAirCardhasnotbeenpreactivated,usethe
ActivationWizardtoconfigurethe
AirCard(asdescribed
inActivation”onpage 19).
Beforeyoubegin theinstallationprocess,ensureyourPCis
runningasupportedoperatingsystemandmeetsthe
hardwarerequirementsdesc ribedbelow.

Start > Runandenter
d:\launch.exewheredisthedriveletterofyourCDROM
drive.
2. FromtheCDstartupwindow,select
notebook installation
andthen
notebook software installationtolaunchthe
InstallShield
®
Wizard.
3. Ifthe
Open With...windowappears,canceltheinstallation
(yourcomputerismissingsomefilesrequiredforthe
installation).Searchfor
Instmsia.exe(ifyou’ rerunning

once.
Note: Do not forcefully insert the
AirCard. This may damage
connector pins. For instructions
on removing the AirCard, see
page 18.
7. Whenyouarepromptedtoinsertthe AirCard,clickOK.
InserttheAirCardintoyourPC Cardslot (referto
page 18).
Note: For Windows 98 and Me users: If your computer has a built-in
network adapter, your computer may appear to have stopped
responding during the card detection process. The operating system
is resolving resource issues related to your built-in adapter and the
AirCard. Do not abort the installation process. Allow several
minutes for the process to complete.
8. Whenyouarenotifiedthattheinstallationiscomplete,
click
OK.
9. IfyouroperatingsystemisWindows 98orMe,restart
yourPCfromthe
Startmenu.
Note: Windows 98 and Me users: If your computer has a built-in
network adapter, another long delay occurs the first time the AirCard
is inserted after this restart. Subsequent insertions of the card will not
experience this delay.
Oncompletionofthisstep,Watcher,theNetworkAdapter
Manager,andtheAirCarddriverareinstalled.
ProceedtoconfiguretheAirCardtouseyouraccount(ifitwas
notpreactivated).SeeA ctivation”onpage 19.

Inserting the AirCard
ToinserttheAirCardintoanotebook:
1. Withthepicturelabelfacingup,inserttheAirCardinto
theslot.
WhenyouinserttheAirCard,thefollowingshouldoccur:
Ifsoundeffectsare enabled,thePCbeeps.
ThePC Cardiconappearsinthesystemtray,ifitisnot
alreadydisplayedfor
anothercard,(andunlessthefeature
hasbeendisabled).
Watcherlaunches(unlesstheautolaunchfeaturehasbeen
disabled).
TheAirCardispoweredassoonasyouinsertit.
Removing the AirCard
ToremovetheAirCard:
1. CloseWatcherifitisopen.
2. ClickthePC Cardiconinthesystemtraytodisplaythe
optiontostopthecard.
