Crosshead Installation Instructions
Prior to ordering your crosshead you want to make sure you order the correct length. This is determined by measuring
the total width of the door or window, making sure to include any trim around the door or window. Crossheads can be
applied over Masonry or Siding.
Tools & Materials Needed:
Measuring device
Drill
Screws
Caulk
Polyurethane adhesive (PL Premium recommended)
Exterior Paint (do not use lacquer based paint)
Hand or power saw (if crosshead length needs to be adjusted on site)
Safety glasses
Installation without a keystone:
1. On the backside of the crosshead, apply a ¼” bead of polyurethane adhesive around the entire perimeter.
2. Put your crosshead into place and fasten using screws. Countersinking and the use of a pilot hole are
recommended. When installing over siding, drill a pilot hole through the header into the siding. Before fastening
the header, enlarge the pilot hole in to the siding to ¼” larger than the fastener. This will allow the siding to
expand and contract beneath the header and prevent the siding from buckling.
3. Patch the screw holes (use spackle). Caulk along the top of the header here it meets the wall surface. Focal
Point recommends painting crossheads after they are installed.
Installation with a keystone:
If you are custom sizing a crosshead on site, determine the length needed as mentioned above. After the length
is determined, mark the center of your crosshead and cut your crosshead in half. On each straight side cut off equal
amounts to get to your desired length. Example: crosshead is 70” long, you only need 60”. After you cut the crosshead in
half, trim 5” off of each side where you made the center cut.
1. Adhere crosshead pieces together by adding a small bead of adhesive to 1 of the straight cuts and butting the 2
pieces together.
2. Apply polyurethane adhesive to the back of the keystone. Set the keystone into place at the center of the
crosshead covering the seam. Apply a screw threw the top of the keystone into each side of the crosshead.
3. On the backside of the crosshead, apply a ¼” bead of polyurethane adhesive around the entire perimeter.
5. Patch the screw holes (use spackle). Caulk along the top of the keystone and header here it meets the wall
surface. Focal Point recommends painting crossheads after they are installed.
