TAXIING - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
1. General
A. The airplane is c ontrolled with engine thrust, rudd er pedal steering, and brakes du ring the taxi
procedure. The taxi procedure can be done with one or both engines.
B. Ta xi Safety P r ec autions.
(1) Personnel that taxi an airplane must be familiar with the airplane and the taxi turn limits. Refer
to F igure 201.
(2) Make sure t hat the hydraulic system and the brakes are in a serviceabl e c ondition.
(3) Use only the necess ary engine thrus t to st art movem ent and to k eep the approx im at e taxi speed.
(4) Do not use t he brakes continuously to keep the correct s peed. Adjust the engine s as necess ary.
(5) Make sure t hat the taxi route is c lear and free of all blockage, such as m aintenanc e stands and
vehicles.
(6) Use an observ er(s ) to m ak e su re that there is wing tip clearance.
(7) On surfaces with ice, when the nosewheel is t urned but has no result, do not let the nosewheel
be turned left or rig ht. Damage to t he nose gear can res ult if a dry area is hit with t he wheel in a
turned position.
2. Taxi the Airplane
A. The maximum ste ering angle when t he rudder pedals are used is 20 de grees l eft and right of center.
When the rudder ped als and left/right brak ing are us ed together, th e maximum angle is limited t o 75
degrees left and rig ht of c enter. Steering duri ng the tax i operat ion is done by the rud der pedals and
left/right braking. Two-eng ine operation is recommended during taxi, due to t he high thrust neces s ary
to m ov e the airplane f rom the parking area.
B. Prepare the Airplane.
(1) Clean the area around the airplane.
(2) Examine the mai n wheels and remove the static ground ca bles and the t ail stand .
(3) Make sure th at the fuel level in the w ings is b alanced as much as pos s ible.
(4) Close all of the access and the baggage doors.
(5) Disconnect the ground cable.
C. Ta xi t he Airplane (Refer to Figu re 202).
(1) Put two personnel in the f ight compartment, one i n the pilot's seat to taxi the airp lane, and one
in th e copilo t's seat to help and to be an observer.
(2) Engage the p arking brake.
WARNING: Make sure that personnel and equipment are clear of the
engine inlet and the exhaust areas.
(3) Start the engines. Refer to the Model 510 FAA Approved Airpl ane Flight Manual.
(4) Remove the wheel chocks.
(5) Release the park ing brake.
(6) Make sure that the ground power unit is disconnec ted.
(7) Make sure that th e taxi personnel k now where the airplane will be mov ed to and what th ey need
to do.
(8) Make sure tha t personnel are clear of the engine inlet and the exhaust areas.
(9) Use only suff cie nt thrust to the engines to s tart to move the airplane. Move t he airplane forward
before it is turned.
(10) Do not ap ply the brakes while the airplane is taxied, dec rease the engine thrus t to d ec re as e the
taxi sp eed.
(11) Use th e brakes to control t he taxi spe ed, but only use the brakes for a very small quantity of tim e.
(12) Control the airpl ane using the rudder pedals.
NOTE: Nose gear steering is operat ed with the rudder pedals.
(13) Put personnel at each w ing tip to make sure that t he wings do not hit any object.
