System Overview

The modem bank is implemented using the
COMSPHERE 3000 Series Carrier and 3811Plus
modems.
• A 4-wire E&M Network Interface Module (NIM)
provides the physical termination for eight 4-wire
E&M connections in the form of a 50-position
connector.
• A single 50-position cable connects the eight
analog interfaces on each NIM to a single 4-wire
E&M interface card on the AAC. (This is the only
interconnection supported for the modem 4-wire
interface; it cannot be directly connected to the
network.)
The WDG always attempts to match the modulation
and error correction (EC) protocol of the remote cellular
and PSTN modems. In addition, the WDG rejects calls on
the cellular connection which attempt to connect without
an EC protocol. (Calls on the PSTN, however, are allowed
to connect without an EC protocol.)
Fax calls and voice calls are identified by the WDG
and handled in passthrough mode.
Network Management
Network Management for the carrier is implemented
using an IBM AT-compatible personal computer running
the COMSPHERE 6700 Series Network Management
System (NMS) under the Microsoft Windows
environment.
The AAC is directly controlled by VT100 terminal
emulation software running on a personal computer. The
AAC supports SNMP, and can be placed under the control
of an SNMP manager such as SunNet Manager or
HP OpenView.
Audio Timeout
The WDG can be used for voice calls. However, this
diminishes the number of connections available for data
calls. The Audio Timeout feature helps maintain
availability of the WDG by disconnecting a voice call
after a user-selected number of seconds (001 to 999)
elapses.
The Audio Timeout configuration option is available
from the Shared Diagnostic Control Panel (SDCP). Audio
Timeout follows the CellularRJ11Adpt configuration
option in the Misc group of the Configure branch.

The and keys are used to move the cursor
from one digit to the next, and the F2 key (under the ↑
symbol) is used to increment the digit position.
The default is 000 seconds, meaning that voice calls
are not automatically disconnected.
The Audio Timeout value must allow sufficient time
for the call to complete. A minimum setting of 30 seconds
is recommended. Set the value in both the land-side and
cellular-side modems.
See the COMSPHERE 3800Plus Modems User’s Guide
(3980-A2-GB30) for more information about configuring
the modem using the SDCP.
