OPERATING & MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
FOR SIMPLEX RAIL PULLER & EXPANDER SERIES 550A
MODEL 550A, 87 550A1.00, 550A1.12, 550A1.18, and 550A1.25
IMPORTANT: PRIOR TO USING JACK, READ AND UNDERSTAND JACK OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS BELOW AND SAFETY PRE-
CAUTIONS OUTLINED ON THE REVERSE SIDE. FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND PROCEDURES AS APPLICABLE.
IN ADDITON, THE OPERATOR SHOULD ADHERE TO THE GENRAL SAFETY PRINCIPLES AND ACCIDENT PREVETNATIVE MEASURES
AS OUTLINED BY THE EQUIPMENT OWNER OR OTHER PREVAILING AUTHORITY.
550A SERIES MEHCANICAL RAIL PULLER/EXPANDERS ARE RATED FOR 30 TONS. THE SUFFIX NUMBER FOLLOWING THE SERIES
NUMBER 55OA DESIGNATE STUD SIZES INCHES. IT IS IMPORTANT TO USE A MODEL WITH THE PROPER STUD SIZE TO FIT THE
HOLE IN THE RAIL.ADDITIONAL STUD SIZES ARE AVAILABLE TO CONVERT ANY OF THE ABOVE MODELS TO SUIT BOLT SIZES AS
SHOWN IN THE TABLE ON THE REVERSE SIDE.
INSTALL THE JACK ON OUTSIDE OF RAIL ONLY TO EXPAND OR PULL AS SHOWN BELOW USING EITHER TIE BARS OR “U” BAR ASI ILUSTRATED
IN VIEW “A-A” OR VIEW “B-B”. USING THE WRENCH FURNISHED, SECURELY TIGHTEN TWO SQUARE NUTS ON ONE
RAIL SECTION ONLY. SECURELY TIGHTEN THE OPPOSITE TWO SQUARE NUTS ON THE ADJACENT RAIL SECTION WHEN TIE BARS
ARE USED AND WITH A MODERATELY LIGHT SNUGGING FORCE WHEN THE “U” BAR IS USED. MAKE CERTAIN THE PAWL IS IN THE
LOWER POSITION AND FIRMLY ENGAGES THE RATCHET WHEEL.
A STANDARD 66 IN. LINING BAR SIMPLEX #10700 IS APPROVED FOR USE AS A LEVER BAR. TO OPERATE, PLACE THE 1 1/2: SQUARE
SHANK OF THE LINING BAR INTO TOTAL DEPTH OF SOCKET. GRIP THE BAR FIRMLY AND EXERTING A CONTROLLED DOWNWARD
FORCE, MAKE DOWNARD STROKES TO EXPAND OR PULL AS DESCRIBED BELOW.
CAUTION: BEFORE EACH STROKE AND PRIOR TO EXERTING HANDLE EFFORT ON THE LEVER BAR, CHECK TO MAKE CERTAIN
THAT THE PAWL IS PROPERLY ENGAGED INTO THE FULL TOOTH DEPTH OF RATCHET WHEEL. NOTE: THEORETICAL HANDLE
EFFORT = 8.5 LBS. PER TON. 30 TON PUSH/PULL LOAD (255 LB. HANDLE EFFORT) MUST NOT BE EXCEEDED.
TO EXPAND RAIL: TO PULL RAIL:
WITH ARROWS ON NUT POINTING OUTWARD AND WITH ARROWS ON NUT POINTING INWARD AND
PAWL PROPERLY ENGAGED INTO THE RATCHET PAWL PROPERLY ENGAGED INTO THE RATCHET
WHEEL IN THE LOWER POSITION AS SHOWN, DOWN- WHEEL IN LOWER POSITION AS SHOWN, DOWN-
WARD LEVER STROKES WILL PUSH RAIL SECTIONS WARD LEVER STROKE WILL PULL RAIL SECTIONS
TO EXPAND TH EJOINT. TO CLOSE THE JOINT.

SAFE OPERATING PROCEDURES & SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:
1. PRIOR TO USE, THE OPERATOR SHOULD BE ISNTRUCTED BY A QUALIFIED PERSON IN THE SAFE AND PROPER USE OF THE JACK
FOR THE APPLICATION.
2. IN ADDITON, TO COMPLIANCE WITH GENERAL SAFETY PRINCIPLES AND ACCIDENT PREVENTATIVE INSTRUCTIONS NOTED ON
THE REVERSE SIDE, THE JACK SHOULD BE EXAMINED BY A QUAILFIED PERSON FOR DAMAGE, PROPER LUBRICATION, AND WEAR.
PRIOR TO EACH USE, THE JACK SHOULD BE OPERATED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS TO VERIFY THAT ALL MECHANISMS ARE IN GOOD
WORKING CONDITON AND FUNCTION PROPERLY. NEVER USE A JACK THAT IS DAMAGED, DIRTY, IMPROPERLY LUBRICATED, OR
MALFUNCTIONING. JACKS THAT FAIL INPSECTION MUST BE REMOVED FROM SERVICE UNTIL REPAIRED BY AN AUTHORIZED
AGENCY.
3. THE OPERATOR SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT THE AREA IS CLEAR OF PERSONNEL AND OBJECTS OBSTRUCTING WORKING SPACE
REQUIRED TO SAFELY ACTIVATE THE JACK LEVER.
4. OPERATORS HEAD AND BODY SHOULD BE POSITIONED IN A MANNER TO AVOID ANY INJURY IN THE EVENT THE JACK IS SUDDENLY
FREE OF LOAD OR A SUDDEN MOVEMENT OF RAIL CAUSES THE LEVER TO SWING UNRESTRICTED.
5. DO NOT EXCEED JACK TRAVEL OR CONTINUE TO APPLY LEVER FORCE AFTER BOTH RAIL SECTIONS MAKE CONTACT. NEVER JUMP
ON, STAND ON, OR STRADDLE A LEVER BAR. DO NOT STRIKE WITH A HAMMER OR FORCE THE LEVER INTO A ROCKING MOTION.
SUDDEN OVERLOAD INDUCED IN THIS MANNER COULD DAMAGE WORKING PARTS AND CAUSE FAILURE.
6. DO NOT USE LEVER BAR EXTENDERS.
7. REMOVE LEVER BAR FROM THE SOCKET WHEN NOT IN USE. AN UNATTENDED BAR PROJECTING FROM THE SOCKET PRESENTS A
PERSONAL INJURY HAZARD.
MAINTENANCE & LUBRICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
1. COMPLY WITH PROCEDURE #2 ABOVE AND PERFORM REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICATON AS DETERMINED FROM USE,
EXPEREINCE OR AS SPECIFIED BY A QUALIFIED PERSON OF AUTHORITY.
2. KEEP ALL PARTS CLEAN AND FREE OF GRIT.
3. LUBRICATE RATCHET ASSEMBLY WITH A GOOD GRADE OF SAE 20 WT. OIL
4. LUBRICATE ALL AREAS OF SCREW, LEFT HAND AND RIGHT HAND NUTS, THE BARS, “U” BARS, STUDS, BOLTS AND SQUARE NUTS
WITH #2 GRAPHITE GREASE.
5. AVOID LUBRICATION OF SPROCKET TEETH AND AREAS OF PAWL CONTACT.
