Introduction
FRM220-TM-10GMux is a 7 x 1GE to 10G Muxponder that can
transport seven separate Gigabit Ethernet data streams into a 10Gbps
SFP+ Based trunk port using TDM technology. The 7 x 1GE interfaces use
SFP-based access that can accommodate various types of SFP, such as
Multi-mode, Single mode and 1Gbps copper SFPs. The trunk port is a
SFP+ 10Gbps permitting flexible connectivity options between the
Muxponders either in a WDM system or directly between two devices.
FRM220-TM-10GMux can be installed in a 19-inch 2U 20-slot
chassis (FRM220-CH20) or 19-inch 1U 8-slot chassis (FRM220-CH08).
Both housings can be monitored and configured through SNMP, Web
GUI or Telnet using a NMC management module. By using FRM220-TM-
10GMux in the network, it provides significant cost reduction and
excellent fiber utilization when it is compared with CWDM optical
multiplexing.

Management Features
When FRM220-TM-10GMux is placed in a stand-alone chassis
(such as FRM220-CH02M) with serial management port, these devices
also support a text based serial terminal with an easy to use menu
system for configuration. When placed in a managed chassis (such as
FRM220-CH20 and FRM220-CH08), the card is configured and monitored
through the chassis NMC (network management controller) via console,
Telnet, Web HTTP or SNMP.

Chassis Installation I
The installation of the FRM220-TM-10GMux card is very straight
forward. Once the chassis has been mounted into a 2RU rack space, the
FRM220-TM-10GMux cards can be inserted in any order and in any slot
of the chassis.
To install the chassis card, align the card with the slot in the
chassis. With the thumb screw at the top of the card, slide the card all
the way into the chassis and secure the thumb screw. No tools are
required, however, if a card’s screw is over tightened, it may require
loosening with a small flat blade screwdriver. Please refer to the figure
below.
Figure 1. Muxponder Card being Inserted into 20-Slot Chassis
Chassis Installation II
The double-width blade card can be inserted into two-slot chassis
for a completely assembled standalone unit. When you install FRM220-
TM-10GMux card in FRM220-CH02M chassis, you can set up functions
using the console terminal.

SFP/SFP+
Introduction
The FRM220-TM-10GMux accepts any 1.25G SFP (CH1~CH7) and
10G SFP+ (Line) unit that comply with MSA (Multi-Source Agreement)
standard. Follow all ESD precautions when handling the card and
pluggable modules. Fiber optic components and cables are very sensitive
to dirt, dust and mishandling, especially in high-speed networks. Dirty or
mistreated fiber may cause errors and an unwanted degradation of
signal quality. Remove the dust caps on SFP or SFP+ only when ready to
plug in optical cables.
When selecting SFP or SFP+ optical modules, make sure the
modules are able to support the required data rates.
Installation
SFP or SFP+ modules supplied by CTC Union are of the Bale Clasp
type. The bale clasp pluggable module has a bale clasp that secures the
module into the SFP or SFP+ cage.
Inserting a Bale Clasp SFP/SFP+ Module into the cage
Step 1. Close the bale clasp upward before inserting the pluggable
module.
Step 2. Line up the SFP/SFP+ module with the port, and slide it
into the cage.
Removing a Bale Clasp SFP/SFP+ Module
Step 1. Open the bale clasp on the SFP/SFP+ module. Press the
clasp downward with your index finger.
Step 2. Grasp the SFP/SFP+ module between your thumb and
index finger and carefully remove it from the SFP/SFP+ cage.

WARNING: Fiber optic equipment may emit laser or infrared light
that can injure your eyes. Never look into an optical fiber or connector
port. Always assume that fiber optic cables are connected to a laser
light source.

Auto Laser Shutdown
Automatic Laser Shutdown (ALS) is a technique used to
automatically shut down the output power of the fiber transmitter in
case of fiber break according to ITU-T G.664. This is a safety feature that
prevents dangerous levels of laser light from leaking out of a broken
fiber, provided ALS is provisioned on both ends of the fiber pair. The
sequence of events is as follows. If a fiber is cut, the receiver will detect
a Loss Of Signal (LOS). The ALS agent will turn off the transmitter. The
receiver at the far end will then detect an LOS and its ALS agent will turn
off the transmitter. In this way the entire fiber will go dark.
Client Side Loopback Test (LBT) Function
The loopback capability of FRM220-TM-10GMux is useful for
debugging a dysfunctional SFP link (CH1~CH7). In loopback mode, the
signal is routed into the Cross Switch circuitry and then routed back to
the signal source. Loopback may be enabled via management terminal
console. When placed in a managed FRM220-CH20 or CH08 chassis, the
loopback test function can also be controlled by the NMC manager in
FRM220 chassis.
In the example below, when the loopback test function is enabled
at the remote client side, all data received on the remote receiver
connection (RX) will be internally loop-backed to the transmitter (TX)
connection.
Caution: Looping of Ethernet may cause a broadcast storm.

Link Fault Pass-Through (LFP)
Link Fault Pass-through or LFP is a method of forwarding a link loss
from one media to the other over the Muxponder. LFP function of
FRM220-TM-10GMux supports both "Line to Client" and "Client to
Client" SFP fiber link fault application for troubleshooting purposes. See
below for detailed explanations:
"Line to Client" LFP Application
For "Line to Client" fiber link pass through application, this feature
will pass a fiber link fault through the device to the SFP at the Client side
when SFP+ LFP function at the Line side enabled. Therefore, if a link fails
on the SFP+ Line side, the Muxponder will force the SFP CH1~CH7 at the
Client side link down.
For example:
As shown in the figure above, if a fault occurs on the 10G SFP+
Line side with local Line LFP enabled, the Muxponder would force each
channel in the local Client side link down.

"Client to Client" LFP Application
Each channel of the client side supports LFP function. With LFP
function of a particular channel enabled, if this channel is link down, the
far end of the channel will be forced to link down as well. A complete
table of "Client to Client" LFP settings is provided below for your
reference.
For example:
In this example, the diagram shows that LFP function of CH1 in
local client side is enabled but the remote client side is disabled. When
the link fault occurs at the local side, this will force the remote client link
down. On the other hand, when the link fault occurs at the remote side,
this will not force the local client link down.

Console Management
When placed in the managed chassis such as 2-Slot CH02M chassis,
this card can be locally managed by connecting a simple serial terminal
such as a notebook computer that has an RS232 port or via a commonly
available USB to RS232 adapter. In Windows XP, HyperTerminal™ is an
application available for emulating a serial terminal. You can also search
for TeraTerm or PuTTY which are free alternatives, especially if the
operating system is Vista, Win7 or newer.
