Telephone support quick reference
This chapter contains information expected to be used most often by ColorShot
telephone support personnel. Refer to later chapters for additional detailed
information.
For the fastest resolution of problems according to their symptoms, see Chapter
3, "Solving problems," on page 51.
Important note: The procedures in this chapter and throughout this manual
have been tested on numerous PC models running the Microsoft Windows 95
operating system. It is not possible to test all systems and configurations,
however, and some unexpected results may occur.

Preparing to install the ColorShot printer
Before a customer connects the ColorShot printer to a PC and installs the driver,
he should perform the following checks to assure the computer's USB port is set
up correctly. If you are unfamiliar with the USB (universal serial bus) protocol,
review Chapter 2, "Introduction to USB," on page 42 before continuing.
1 Verify that the computer has Windows 95 version B installed by following the
steps below. (This version B of Windows 95 is also called OSR2.)
a Click the My Computer icon with the right mouse button, then click
Properties on the shortcut menu that appears.
10 ColorShot printer telephone support guide
b Click the General tab and verify that the Windows 95 version number
ends in the letter "b."

If the Windows 95 version is correct, go to step 2.
If the Windows 95 version number does not end in "b," the system cannot
use ColorShot or other USB devices unless the operating system is
upgraded. For more information, see "Upgrading to USB" on page 49.
11 ColorShot printer telephone support guide
2 Verify that the computer has a USB connector.
Desktop PCs usually have two USB connectors, and laptops may have only one.

If a USB connector is present, go to step 3.
If the computer does not have USB connectors, it must be upgraded with a USB
expansion board before it can be used with the ColorShot printer. See
"Upgrading to USB" on page 49 for more information.
3 Verify that the USB ports are enabled with the following steps:
a Click the My Computer icon with the right mouse button, then click
Properties on the shortcut menu that appears.

b Click the Device Manager tab and verify that a USB device appears at the
bottom of the list, with sub-entries similar to the examples shown below.

If the device is not visible or it is preceded by a yellow exclamation point
(
), the customer may need to enable USB in the computer's BIOS and
install the USB supplement on the PC as described in the next section.
Installing the USB supplement and enabling USB in BIOS
If the procedure in the previous section indicates that the USB supplement to
OSR2 must be installed on the PC and USB must be enabled in the computer's
BIOS, follow the instructions in this section.
In general, the procedure consists of these general steps:
1 Installing the USB supplement to OSR2.
2 Enabling USB in the computer BIOS.
Use these steps to install the supplement necessary for enabling USB on the
computer.
1 Following instructions with Windows 95, run ScanDisk to verify that no
problems exist on the computer hard drive.

2 Run DETROITR.EXE in the USB folder on the ColorShot CD ROM. (Click the
Windows Start button, click Run, click the Browse button, navigate to the USB
folder on the CD ROM drive, click DETROITR.EXE, click Open, and click OK
in the Run box.)
3 Follow instructions on the screen to complete the installation, which includes
restarting the system.
4 Verify that the USB ports are enabled with the following steps:
a Click the My Computer icon with the right mouse button, then click
Properties on the shortcut menu that appears.

If the USB device instead appears in the Other Detected Devices category
instead of the way it is shown above, the drivers may not have installed
properly. In this case, continue with step 5 below.
5 If the USB device appears in the Other Detected Devices category, click the
USB device to highlight it.
Note: Some systems, including many PC clones, require installation of
additional utilities before the USB configuration is complete. For example, some
chipsets require a patch file installation as described in "Enabling USB with
430TX and 440LX chipsets" on page 23.
6 Remove the device by clicking the Remove button.
7 Allow the system to detect the USB controller by closing the Device Manager
and restarting Windows.
The USB controller should appear as shown in the illustration following step 4b
above.
8 Continue with enabling USB in the computer BIOS as described in the next
section.
17 ColorShot printer telephone support guide
When the USB host controller is enabled by installing the USB supplement as
described in the previous section, it typically installs on IRQ 9, 10 or 11. The
host controller installs itself on the PCI bus using the built-in process called IRQ
steering. With this process, Windows dynamically assigns ("steers") PCI bus
IRQs to PCI devices. The Device Manager often shows the USB host controller
sharing an IRQ with another device. This does not seem to cause problems with
the ColorShot printer.
In rare instances, a PCI board that worked before USB was enabled no longer
works after USB is enabled. When this happens, the Device Manager displays a
yellow exclamation point next to the device that no longer works. This problem
has two workarounds:
Assign another IRQ: Some PCI boards are shipped with utility programs for
assigning an IRQ to the device. These utilities are usually accessed during
startup.
Make another IRQ available: Another IRQ can be made available for the
board by disabling a device that the customer does not use. For example, many
laptop PCs have an infrared port occupying an IRQ. If the infrared port is not
used, the customer can disable its IRQ port through the BIOS setup. After the
system is restarted, that IRQ will be available for other devices.

18 ColorShot printer telephone support guide
Some computers may not have the USB controller enabled in the system BIOS.
Use the steps below to enable the controller or verify that it is already enabled.
Note: Be sure to follow the steps in "Installing the USB supplement to OSR2" in
the previous section before starting this procedure.
1 Reboot the system and wait for on-screen instructions for displaying the BIOS
setup screens. For example, some computers require the user to press the F2 key
at a certain time during bootup.
2 Navigate through the BIOS screens to the setting that enables the USB
controller. The USB setting is often in the "Advanced Chipset Setup, "
"Integrated Peripherals" or "Chipset" setup screen. Look for "USB Function" or
"USB Function Enable." On some systems, the USB function may be labeled
"USB Keyboard Controller."
3 If the USB function is not enabled, follow instructions on the setup screen to
enable it.
4 Follow instructions on the screen to save the new settings and reboot the system.
5 Continue with ColorShot installation, starting with "Connect the printer" on
page 6 of ColorShot Installation Guide.

Installation notes for specific computers
Some systems tested for ColorShot compatibility require special procedures for
proper installation.
Some NEC laptop computers, specifically the model 5060, may display the
following line in the Windows Device Manager (at step 3 on page 11), even if
USB has not been enabled in the computer BIOS:
2SHQ+&'86%+RVW&RQWUROOHU
If this line appears in the Device Manager on an NEC laptop computer, follow
these steps to prepare for installation:
1 Enable USB in the computer BIOS. (See "Enabling USB in BIOS" on page 18.)
2 Continue with ColorShot installation according to instructions starting on page 6
of ColorShot Installation Guide.

If the ColorShot software cannot be installed on a Compaq Deskpro 4000
computer, follow these steps:
1 Click the My Computer icon with the right mouse button, then click Properties
on the shortcut menu that appears.
2 Click the Device Manager tab.
If a USB device appears at the bottom of the list as shown below, discontinue
this procedure. Instead, click the OK button and proceed with ColorShot
installation according to instructions starting on page 6 of ColorShot Installation
Guide.
