3. ConfigurethePSSeriessoftware.First,initializeanarraytomakeitaccessibleonthenetwork.Then,either

Installation Safety Precautions
Followthesesafetyprecautions:
• Dellrecommendsthatonlyindividualswithrack-mountingexperienceinstallanarrayinarack.
• Makesurethearrayisfullygroundedatalltimestopreventdamagefromelectrostaticdischarge.
• Whenhandlingthearrayhardware,youmustusetheelectrostaticwristguardshippedwiththearrayora
similarformofprotection.
• Youneedatleasttwopeopletoliftthearraychassisfromtheshippingbox.
Rack Requirements
Therackandthearrayinstallationmustmeetthefollowingrequirements:
• Useanindustry-standard,EIA-310-Dcompliant,four-post19-inchrackwithuniversalsquareholeor
unthreadedroundholespacing.
• Therackisratedfor540kg(1200pounds)staticloadorgreater.
• Theminimumrackdepthis100cm(40inches)fromthefrontoftheracktotherearoftherack.
• FortheReadyRailsIIrailkits,thedistancebetweentheoutsidesurfacesofthefrontandrearrackposts
(themountingsurfaces)canrangefrom595mmto914mm(23.4”to36.0”)forsquare-holeracks,581mmto
907mm(22.9”to35.7”)forround-holeracks,and595mmto929mm(23.4”to36.6”)forthreaded-hole
racks.
• Therackissecuredtothefloorforaddedstability.
• Loadarackwitharraysfromthebottomtothetop.

arrayfrontbezel.

• Mountthearrayinahorizontalorientationoryouwillvoidyourarraywarrantyandsupportcontract.
Environmental Requirements
Theracklocationmustmeetthefollowingenvironmentalrequirements:
• Thepowersourcecansupplyavoltagerangeof100Vto240VAC.
• Thepowersourcehassufficientelectricaloverloadprotection:
InNorthAmerica,connectthearraytoasourceofpowerwithover-currentprotectionprovidedbya
doublepole20Aorlessdevice(UL489circuitbreakers).
InEurope,theover-currentprotectionmustbeprovidedbya20Aorlessdevice(IECcircuitbreakers).
• Thereissufficientspaceforairflowinfrontofandbehindthearray.
• Thelocationisproperlyvented.

Protecting Hardware
ProtectyourPSSeriesarrayfromelectrostaticdischarge.Whenhandlingarrayhardware,useanelectrostatic
wriststraporasimilarformofprotection.Touseawriststrap:
1. Connectthesteelsnaponthecoilcordtothestudontheelasticband.SeeFigure1.

Determine Where to Place the Mounting Rails in the Rack
Makesurethereisenoughspaceintherackforthechassis.Inastandardrack,a2Uchassiswillspansixholes
anda4Uchassiswillspan12holes.
Installing the Rails and Array in a Rack
Installtherailsintherackfollowingthesafetyinstructionsandtherackinstallationinstructionsprovidedwith
yourrailkit.
Ifinstalledinaclosedormulti-unitrackassembly,theoperatingtemperatureoftherackenvironmentmightbe
greaterthanroomambient.Therefore,makesureyouinstallthearrayinanenvironmentcompatiblewiththe
maximumtemperaturespecifiedbythemanufacturer.Formoreinformation,seeTechnical Specifications on
page 31.

Withassistance,liftthearray,keepingthearraylevel,andslideitontothemountingrailsuntilthearray
engages.
Attach the Array to the Mounting Rails
Makesurethearraycaptivefastenersonthefrontofthearraylineupwiththethreadedholesonthefrontofthe
mountingrails,andmanuallysecurethecaptivefastenerstotherails.
Note: Donotovertightenthethumbscrews.
Installing the Bezel
Thestepsforinstallingthebezelarethesameforallarraymodels:
1. Hooktherightendofthebezelontotherightsideofthechassis.
2. Swingtheleftendofthebezeltowardtheleftsideofthechassis.
3. Pressthebezelintoplaceuntilthereleaselatchcloses.
4. Usingthekeyprovided,lockthebezelandstorethekeyinasafeplaceasshowninFigure3andFigure4.

sizednetworklink
Foreffectiveandpredictablereplication,thenetworklinkbetweentheprimaryand
secondarygroupsmustbereliableandprovidesufficientbandwidthforcopyingdata.
Useofspanning-tree
protocol
Ifpossible,donotuseSpanningTreeProtocol(STP)onswitchportsthatconnectendnodes
(iSCSIinitiatorsorarraynetworkinterfaces).
IfyoumustuseSTPorRSTP(STPispreferable),enabletheportsettings(availableonsome
switches)thatlettheportimmediatelytransitionintoSTPforwardingstateuponlinkup.
Thisfunctionalitycanreducenetworkinterruptionsthatoccurwhendevicesrestart,and
shouldbeenabledonlyonswitchportsthatconnectendnodes.
YoucanuseSTPforasingle-cableconnectionbetweenswitchesandtrunkingfor
multicableconnectionsbetweenswitches.
VLANs
TouseDCB(DataCenterBridging),configureswitchestouseVLANstoseparateiSCSI
SANtrafficfromothernetworktraffic.

Foradualcontrolmodulearray,therecommendedconfigurationistoconnectnetworkcablestoEthernet0on
bothcontrolmodules,andconnecteachcontrolmoduletoanetworkswitch.
Forhighperformanceandavailability,distributetheconnectionsacrossmultiplenetworkswitches.
TheswitchesmustbeconnectedwithinterswitchlinksthathavesufficientbandwidthtohandletheiSCSItraffic,
orbystackingcapability.Dellrecommendsusingstackingconfigurationswhereverpossible.

Connect and Secure the Power Cables
Obtainthepowercablesthatwereshippedwiththearray.Ifthearraywasnotshippedwithpowercables,
contactyourPSSeriessupportproviderorresellerforpowercableinformation.
Note: Thepowersupplyandcoolingmodulesaredifferentforthe2Uandthe4Uarraymodels.However,they
functionthesamewayintermsofintegrationintoadatacenterpowerinfrastructure.
1. MakesurethatthepowerswitchisintheOFF(O)positionbeforeconnectingthepowercables.
2. ConnectthepowercablestothepowersuppliesasshowninFigure6andFigure7.
3. Securethepowercablestothesystem:
a. Securethepowercablesfirmlytothebracketnexttothesystempowerreceptacleusingthe
providedhook-and-loopstrap.
b. Makesurethestrapistightlyboundtothebracketanchorpoint(removeanyslack).
c. Biasthepowercabletowardthestrapandwrapthestraptightlyaroundthecableagainstthe
shoulderofthepowercableconnector.
4. Attachthepowercablestoapowersource:
Plugthepowercablesintoagroundedelectricaloutletoraseparatepowersourcesuchasanunin-
terruptedpowersupply(UPS)orapowerdistributionunit(PDU).ThebottomLEDofthepowersupply
willbeilluminatedgreen(indicatingpowerispresent)whenpowercablesareconnected.
EachUPS(notincluded)shouldbeonadifferentcircuitandmustprovidethecorrecttypeofvoltagefor
anadequateamountoftime.
Alternately,connectonepowersupplyandcoolingmoduletoaUPSsystemandconnecttheothermod-
uletoadifferentsourceofpower.
Caution: Donotturnonpowertothearrayyet.
